The prophetic words below are spoken by Christ in this week’s Gospel reading from Saint Matthew.

The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Matthew 23

Unfortunately, these words don’t seem to mirror society. On the other hand, I think it’s safe to say that many of the priests who’ve been assigned to Good Samaritan and Saint John the Baptist over the years have been amazed to see the spirit of service, volunteerism and self-sacrifice here. It is inspiring to see the words of Christ being put into action week after week by those who give of themselves in our parishes. Since my first assignment here when I was newly ordained, I’ve personally watched the transformation of our parishes, as strangers have met and worked side by side and formed intimate friendships.

Each year, Catholic Charities of Beaver County gives us a chance to recognize a few of these dedicated volunteers at the Marcus O’Brien Banquet. Congratulations to Angie Catanzariti of Good Samaritan, and the Holy Name Society of Saint John the Baptist for receiving the 2017 Marcus O’Brien Award for their dedicated service to the Church. May God continue to bless those who serve Him so

unselfishly, preaching the Gospel with their lives.

Practice What You Preach – The Pharisees and the scribes are called to task in the Gospel today because of the void in their hearts. They expect others to do as they say, often placing great burdens on them, while they themselves fail to live by the same expectations. As Christians, we seek to guard against falling into this same trap of hypocrisy. Our words should be consistent with our actions. If we say we love God above all it doesn’t mean only when we’re at church or when he’s doing good things for us. If we say we love others it doesn’t mean except for when they anger us or do us wrong. God’s love is without condition and we strive to love unconditionally. On Mission for The

Church Alive! seeks to expand our hearts to love all, whether it’s convenient or not. Maybe we will be called upon to welcome others to a new spiritual home or maybe we will be the one seeking welcome. Let our actions not betray our words as we strive to be vibrant witnesses of the love of Jesus. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
