FROM THE PASTOR

del Tiempo Ordinario

July 28th, 2019 Seventeenth Sunday

in Ordinary Time

The Spirit cries out “Abba,” Father (Lk 11,1-13) Week XVII of Ordinary Time - July 28, 2019. The title given to Jesus most frequently in the Gospel is that of "Teacher." In today's Gospel Jesus reveals himself as a Teacher of prayer. He does this in response to the request of one of his disciples. "While Jesus was in prayer in a certain place, when he finished, one of his disciples said to him," Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples. " As we see, this disciple's request was motivated by the prayer testimony of Jesus him-self. Seeing him pray himself woke up in the disciple the desire to pray in the same way. What is so impressive about Jesus' prayer? Listen to the answer from the lips of Jesus himself: "He said to them:‘ When you pray, say: Father ... ". Jesus' prayer was infinitely attractive because he dialogues with God as a Son with his Father. He teaches us to pray as he prays himself. This John could not teach his disciples. When Jesus calls God "Father," he does so with absolute co-herence, that is, he behaves in everything as "Son of God." It is what the letter to the Hebrews observes: "He was heard be-cause of his reverent attitude, and being a Son, with what he suffered he practiced obedience" (Heb 5,7-8). Moreover, "he became obedient until the death and death of the cross" (Phil 2,8). From other texts we know how the exact word with which Jesus invokes God sounds "Ababa" in Aramaic. This is a way of calling the Father that reflects immense love, intimacy and reverence. It is introducible! No one had called God that way before him. The impressive thing is that Jesus introduces us to this mystery of his sons hip by ordering us to call God with that same name. We can do it because he gives us his Spirit that enables us to invoke God as Father. According to St. Paul, this is the proof that we are children of God: “The proof that you are children is that God has sent to our hearts the Spirit of his Son who cries out: Abba, Father!” (Gal 4,6). The only one who can use that name referring to God is the Son. He cries out: "Abba." If we can do it with truth, it is proof that we have received the same Spirit, that is, that we have been adopted as children of God. Every Christian prayer is that of a child of God. He who does not have the Spirit of the Son cannot make Christian prayer. Sin throws the Spirit of God from us and contradicts our voca-tion as children. Jesus then teaches us that to pray as he does, the first condition is to have the firm decision to avoid all sin, even deliberate venial sin. After teaching them our Father, Jesus adds another teaching through a parable - the parable of an importune friend - and through a comparison of the Father from heaven with the par-ents of this earth. It would be beautiful to be able to comment, but we have no room for that. We will only say that if the friend who arrives at midnight had given up on the first rejec-tion - "Do not bother me ..." -, he would not have obtained any-thing. He got everything he needed, because he kept upsetting. God will never reject us saying, "Don't bother me." And yet, he wants our prayer to be confident and persevering. That is why Jesus continues to teach: “I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and it will open to you. Because everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and the caller will be opened ”.
