FOLLOW YOUR CONSCIENCE! Everybody has one. Everybody needs one. Sometimes it would be easier if we didn’t. Conscience is so important, and we hear a great deal about the “rights of conscience” these days. As important as it is, many people use the word without knowing what it means. I will offer some reflections on conscience in two parts. The second installment will be in next week’s bulletin. You hear many people today justifying their actions and their ideas by appealing to their conscience. They say things like: “Well, I just don’t feel that such and such is wrong.” It is true that we must follow our conscience. However, because we are obliged to follow it, we are just as obliged to have 1) a clear, accurate understanding of what a conscience is, and 2) a properly informed conscience. Unfortunately, there is quite a bit of misunderstanding about conscience. Some seem to identify conscience as a “little voice inside us”. Others think of it as “simply the way that I feel.” Many people who justify their code of morality by appealing to their conscience haven’t the faintest idea what a conscience is or how they got one. Let’s begin by looking at what a conscience is. The word “conscience” (or con/science) comes from two Latin words: “con” (meaning “with”) and “scientia” (meaning “science” or a knowledge acquired through study). Conscience is not something that we are born with. We gain experience through study and investigation. We are not content to simply rely on our feelings about something. A fairly accurate definition of conscience could be “a judgement concerning right versus wrong human conduct.” Since it is a judgement, it comes from our intellect, not our emotions or feelings. Sometimes our feelings or emotions can be in conflict with our conscience. For example, we may know that abortion is wrong and yet feel sympathy for a friend who has had an abortion. We are not born with a conscience. We are born with the ability to form one (just as we are not born with a language, but only the ability to learn to speak one.) Consequently, our conscience is formed by a source outside of ourselves. It is a product of education. So the question is: “What information forms our conscience?” Whose information, whose “scientia” about morality do we seek? The Church’s? Society’s? The media’s? An influential friend’s? A good case could be made for the suggestion that the consciences of more Americans are formed by TV talk show hosts than by the Catholic Church and all of the other Christian churches combined! Think about it. Who or what influences you the most when it comes to difficult moral and ethical choices? Is it the Gospel of Jesus Christ or something else? Next week we’ll look at how our own consciences have been formed. Fr. Joseph

HOW ARE WE DOING?

APR 1-7, 2017 OFFERTORY $26,383.11 PARISH CHARITIES $993.00 OTHER INCOME $2,337.54 DIOCESAN COLLECTIONS $75.00 BUILDING FUND INCOME $290.00 HAITI INCOME $195.00

MAY 7, 2017-4TH SUNDAY OF EASTER “And Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ…” Acts 2:38

The word “repent” means to turn from sin, to change our actions. When it comes to change, do we take responsibility for change or do we think that others have to change instead? Change that is permanent comes from within, we must take control and be disciplined. Remember though that we are not alone, Jesus is there to help lighten the load.

Food Collection: Thank you for the donations during Lent for the Food Pantry at Holy Comforter through the 40 Cans for Lent Program sponsored by the Knights of Columbus. Over 3,000 pounds of food was collected! Your generosity was amazing and very much appreciated! During the month of May, we are collecting for the Food Ministry at Incarnation. Suggested items: Dried Beans (any size, 10&25lb), Rice (any size), Breakfast Cereal, Pasta Sauce, Pasta/Spaghetti, Peanut Butter&Jelly, Cooking Oil, Canned Chicken, Tuna, Corn, Fruit, Hearty Soups, and Tomatoes, Crushed or Diced. This Ministry serves 140 families, many in the Charlottesville Hispanic/Latino Community. Some folks receive no other assistance and depend on the Church of the Incarnation for the food they receive biweekly.

CRS (Catholic Relief Services) Lenten Rice Bowls - THANK YOU! Our community changed lives this Lent, and CRS Rice Bowl wants to say thank you! Don't forget to convert your contributions to bills or a check made out to St. Thomas Aquinas Church with CRS Rice Bowl on the memo line, seal it in an envelope and drop it in the collection basket at Mass.

IMPACT (Interfaith Movement Promoting Action by Congregations Together): At the Nehemiah Action on April 25th, we heard that Region Ten broke ground on the Women's Treatment Center and that funding for it is now in both the City and County budgets. Wes Bellamy, Bob Fenwick, and Mike Signer from the Charlottesville City Council and Diantha McKeel, Ann Mallek and Norman Dill from the Albemarle Board of Supervisors all said Yes to advocating for the Women's Treatment Center as they hold office by doing everything they can to ensure funding in future budgets and communicating to IMPACT any changing in funding. For the issue of Elder Care, we found through research that affordable senior housing is needed. In Albemarle County, 2,800 senior households struggle to keep a roof over their heads, paying at least 30% of their income on housing. The solution is more affordable housing for seniors. Diantha McKeel and Norman Dill from the Albemarle Board of Supervisors said Yes to supporting the development of concrete steps to implement the strategies in the Albemarle County Comprehensive Plan that provide more affordable housing for seniors. They will provide IMPACT with a progress report before 2018. Thank you to the 49 parishioners that were at the Action!

Ministry Fair: Please visit the Mercy & Justice Committee table at the Ministry Fair, May 6/7 to learn more about our activities, including those listed above. We welcome your interest and involvement in building the Kingdom of God.
