MASSES FOR THE WEEK

PENTECOST SUNDAY

My Dear Parishioners,

What does tradition tell us happened on the first

Pentecost? Luke describes it quite vividly as the

deafening noise of a wind. He tells of flames of fire

coming to settle on the heads of all gathered in the

upper room and everyone there coming alive in a new

way, speaking bold proclamations in foreign languages.

Actually the wind, the fire, the divine energy permeat-

ing the walls of that room caused each of these disciples

to become new and different people, no longer hiding

out, no longer afraid, no longer uncertain. They all

became alive with the Holy Spirit. What happened on

that day was the turning point in each of their lives and

in the life of the Church itself.

Each of us has Pentecost moments as well, those times

when we know the Spirit is with us, when we become

alive with the Spirit of God permeating our very being.

What experience, what person, what circumstance, what

success or failure, what grace set us in the right

direction, on the right road to a faithful life? What was

our own personal Pentecost? When was the moment

that the Holy Spirit turned our lives around and directed

us toward God and others? The gift of the Holy Spirit at

Confirmation is only the beginning.

Very often it is only in looking back that we can see the

workings of the Holy Spirit in our lives. At the time we

might not have been aware that this or that moment or

event was a moment of grace. For most of us, it was not

dramatic.

Personal pentecosts go on in our lives each and every

day in so many ordinary ways. The Spirit moves in us

and we see it in the smile of a child, the words, I love

you from a family member, or I forgive you from a

friend. Whenever we ponder, reflect, or treasure the

many successes and failures in our lives, and see them

all as blessed turning points, then the Holy Spirit moves

within us and sends us forth to boldly proclaim and live

the truth of our faith, Jesus Christ is Lord!

Pentecost is so much more than the birth of the Church;

it is also the turning point happening in each and every

one of us in the ordinary grace filled moments of our

lives.

God Bless, Msgr. Maresca

It’s not too early!

If you have a child beginning first

grade in public school, it is time

to register for Religious

Education.

Diocesan guidelines require two years of instructions prior to the

reception of a Sacrament. If your child is already

in the first grade and missed this year, call the

Office of Religious Education to set up an

appointment to discuss the options.

Are you interested in being Baptized or

complete your initiation by the reception

of the Sacraments of Eucharist and/or

Confirmation for Easter 2016?

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

The RCIA is a process in which adults

prepare themselves for the reception of

the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism,

Confirmation and Eucharist) through

study, discussion and discernment. Please

contact the Rectory.

Congratulations to Deacon Nick Scarlotto on the

occasion of his Ordination by Bishop DiMarzio on

Saturday, May 23 at St. Joseph’s Co-Cathedral. A

Mass of Thanksgiving for Deacon Nick will be this

Sunday at the 11:00 a.m. Mass with a reception in his

honor immediately following Mass in Msgr. Campbell

Hall.

We wish everyone a very safe and happy Memorial

Day weekend.

Once again, SFA will be celebrating our Annual

Walkathon this coming week. It is our seventh one,

and everyone is excited and ready to participate.

Students will receive a SFA Walkathon T-Shirt and

healthy drinks and snacks. This year, the day will

include Mindfulness Yoga lessons for Grades K-8.

Money raised by the Walkathon will benefit our

school; and this year, a portion of the proceeds will

be donated to Catholic Relief Services to Aid Nepal.

We thank our coordinator, Mrs. Zotto, the

volunteers, parents and other sponsors in advance for

once again supporting our school. We are very

appreciative of your kindness and generosity.

O God, throughout the ages you have called women

and men to pursue lives of perfect charity through

the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and

obedience. During this Year of Consecrated Life, we

give you thanks for these courageous witnesses of

Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy

lives teaches us to make a more perfect offering of

ourselves to you. Continue to enrich your Church by

calling forth sons and daughters who, having found

the pearl of great price, treasure the Kingdom of

Heaven above all things. Through our Lord Jesus

Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the

I realize with the nice weather here, and all your different activities, that you may not be able to serve your mass. Please try to get a replacement or switch assignments with someone. I am in the process in setting up a calendar of the summer months for you to fill out when you are able to serve. This will enable me to set up the serving schedule for the whole summer.
