My dear friends in Christ,

This Respect Life Sunday we hear in St. Paul’s letter to the Philippians a call to “humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but also for those of others.” How appropriate for us to receive this exhortation as we begin a month of focusing upon the respect and dignity to be afforded to every human life from conception until natural death.

In a world which diminishes the value of so many lives, we as the Body of Christ, His Church, recommit ourselves to the work of promoting this God-given dignity and the protection of the most vulnerable in our society.

As Catholics, we are called to value and protect this special dignity in our brothers and sisters. Whether it is an unborn baby whose mother is considering abortion, a teenager contemplating suicide because he is being bullied at school, our immigrant brothers and sisters searching for a better life, or an elderly neighbor in her final days of life. In each instance and at every stage we are called to defend life, each one is an important gift!

Please join me during Respect Life Month in praying for all human life from conception to natural death. Let us witness to our commitment as Catholics to being people of life.

I am grateful to the parishes and schools throughout our diocese who participate in the Respect Life Program and who make the work of protecting and defending human life a priority throughout the year. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend David J. Walkowiak Bishop of Grand Rapids

Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time: On this Respect Life Sunday, what better words could we hear than Saint Paul’s in today’s second reading? “Humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his or her own interests, but also for those of others.” As we gather here today, let us pray to our loving God for the wisdom to make these words the hallmark of our lives, respecting all other lives by putting their interests first.

UPDATE:

You may have noticed changes to the offertory envelope packet you recently received. First of all, with the inclusion of new envelopes, we are giving parishioners an opportunity to supplement their weekly offering with contributions, if they so desire, to the Maintenance Fund and the Benevolent Fund. The Maintenance Fund is being set up as a means to help us save for long- term costs of maintaining our facilities, such as roof or window replacement, without putting an excessive strain on our budget. The Benevolent Fund is the means through which the Parish provides the Christian Service to the community. This is done through emergency financial assistance for rent and utilities, donations to organizations which promote Gospel values, and tuition assistance to parishioner students attending Catholic elementary and secondary schools. The Benevolent Fund is currently funded through a 5% tithe of our offertory collection. The Benevolent Fund envelope is being provided for those who would like to make a further donation to this worthy endeavor.

Secondly, as a means of demonstrating that we gather in a special way to celebrate on the Holy Days throughout the year, there will be no collections, and therefore no offering envelopes for those days (except on Christmas). Hopefully this will help us in some way (as I once heard a pastor put it) turn the Holy Days of Obligation into Holy Days of Opportunity.
