Bird’s Nest, China: BASF contributed to the construction of the red, bowl-shaped auditorium of the Chinese National Stadium. The unique shape and complex structure of the tiers posed unusual challenges for the planning and production of the precast concrete elements on which the spectator seats are mounted. BASF supplied high-performance admixtures to make it possible to manufacture the 14,700 equally high-quality concrete precast slabs of different sizes in a very short time. Burj Khalifa, UAE: For this project, the contractor required concrete with a high slump retention without delayed strength development. Glenium® SKY 504 has both these characteristics and can be pumped up to record-breaking heights. Caterpillar, USA: Caterpillar is the world‘s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment. Caterpillar was looking for a new, extremely heavy‑duty paving for its test site in Peoria, Illinois, where the company carries out tests with its heaviest construction machinery. EB’s Admixture Systems solutions package has set new standards: They delivered a suitable concrete mix design together with an exhaustive consultancy package and joint spacing software-supported analysis. East-West Highway through Algeria: BASF contributed a range of products and solutions to the construction of this highway: For example, Glenium® 27 and Rheobuild® 850 were used to modify the concrete for bridge construction, while concrete repairs were carried out using Emaco® S88 C and Emaco® R303. Masterflex® waterstop tape and Masterseal® 550 were used for waterproofing the tunnels, Concresive® 1414 for connecting precast concrete parts and Flowcable ® grout for fixing anchor bolts. Rheofinish® 202 provides a smooth surface for precast concrete parts, superplasticizers with air-entraining agents Microair® 120 and Microair® 111 along with the evaporation protection agent Masterkure® 106 secure a high level of concrete quality and MEYCO® SA 160 helps stabilize tunnels and slopes. Football Stadium, USA: In 2009, the new Dallas Cowboys stadium opened in Arlington, Texas. Three Construction Chemicals business lines have contributed to this major construction project: Admixture Systems, Building Systems (Waterproofing), and Watson Bowman Acme. Google Research & Development Center, Switzerland: The new Google think tank has set ups such as a kitchen and “freeflow” eating and recreation areas. Around 650 square meters of Mastertop flooring solutions were used for the floors in these areas that are exposed to a great deal of traffic.For example, the kitchen was equipped with Mastertop® 1270 R, and in the “freeflow” area Mastertop® 1326 was applied. Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge, Nigeria: The Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge in Lagos is Nigeria’s first cable‑stayed bridge. Products and solutions from Construction Chemicals are making crucial contributions to this landmark construction project. EB products used in this project: Rheofinish 202, Pozzolith LD 50 hyperplasticizer, Rheobuild 561M hyperplasticizer. Marmaray Project, Turkey: The project includes construction of a tunnel which will create a direct link between the continents of Europe and Asia. The concrete used for the tunnel segments as well as for the tunnel sections constructed in the cut and cover technique is produced using the GleniumR SKY 506M hyperplasticizer and the Micro Air 200B air entraining agent. The mix design for the segments to be installed in the 19‑kilometer TMB‑excavated tunnel, which requires an early strength development of 20 MPa after only seven hours, includes the Glenium ACE 30 hyperplasticizer, developed specifically for precast concrete production. The MeycoR TSG 6 tail sealant was used for the four slurry micro machines used in conjunction with the TBM. The backfill mortar also contains Glenium SKY 506M, and the soil conditioners used were Meyco SLF 30, RheosoilR 143 and Rheosoil 214. The required properties for the sprayed concrete were obtained through the combined use of the alkali‑free Meyco SA 162 sprayed‑concrete accelerator and the RheobuildR 716 and Rheobuild 878 plasticizers. Water ingress in this section was stopped using the Meyco MP 355 A3 polyurethane‑based injection foam and the Meyco MP 357 GS injection resin, another polyurethane‑based product. Marina Bay Sands Hotel, Singapore: What makes the Marina Bay Sands an architectural eye‑catcher are its three 55‑story hotel towers. For the sealing of wet areas and balconies of 983 hotel rooms in these towers, the planning team had specified the Sonoshield® HLM 5000 waterproofing solution from Construction Chemicals (Sonoshield HLM 5000 is an elastomeric, polymer‑modified waterproofing membrane which due to its high elasticity can also absorb the stress created by the heat‑induced movement of the balconies). Besides, Construction Chemicals developed a cost‑efficient concrete mix design in accordance with the technical specifications for basement slabs, walls, structural beams, and columns. For this, Rheobuild® 1000 hyperplasticizer and Pozzolith® 138R setting retarder were used. Nestlé, India: Nestlé is a world-leading Swiss nutrition, health and wellness company that has invested 300 million Euros towards setting up new production plants in South Asia. The plant in Una is Nestlé’s largest chocolate plant. EB won over a competitor and installed 12.000 m² Ucrete MF. One World Trade Center, USA: For One World Trade Center, the highest building in the ensemble of the new World Trade Center complex in New York City, designers made high demands on the concrete, also in terms of sustainability. BASF’s Green Sense Concrete technology helps meet all those requirements. Green Sense® Concrete concept is an advanced Concrete Mixture Optimization service utilizing BASF admixtures, enabling the production of high performance concrete in a cost-efficient and environmentally preferable way. Green Sense® Concrete attains desired setting characteristics, strength, and durability at a reduced cost to the producers. It allows producers to increase their profitability, and provide a "green" alternative to positively influence the environment. Santo Antonio Powerplant, Brazil: For the construction of the Santo Antônio hydropower plant near Porto Velho in the north of Brazil, the Construction Chemicals team in Brazil custom‑developed two new concrete admixtures. Glenium® 350, a polycarboxylate‑ether‑based hyperplasticizer for the production of concretes with different levels of workability, and Glenium RM 320 SA, a mid‑range water‑reducing admixture for higher strength and durability of the concrete. Both newly developed products were used in all concrete construction of the power station, including the 13.9‑meter‑high and 3,100‑meter‑wide dam wall. Shanghai Tower, China: Shanghai Tower is China’s tallest building; EB contributed with Rheoplus® 325 concrete admixture, sureTEC (Super Retention Technology) to ensure control over the concrete’s workability for more than two hours, and Smart Dynamic Concrete with RheoMATRIX® for easier application and prolonged durability. Sydney Opera House, Australia: Master Builders brand products have been used for construction of this iconic structure (construction period: 1965 - 1973) Wemmershoek Dam, South Africa: The dam went into operation in 1957, and, after more than 50 years of exposure to the comparatively aggressive fresh water of the region, severe deficiencies were discovered. Corrosion damage penetrated into the surfaces. A total of 3,500 square meters of dam surface were cleaned, repaired with Emaco S73, and, after thorough curing, treated with Masterseal 501.
