The Master of Ecotourism (coursework) covers the areas of: Ì the theory and practice of ecotourism Ì understanding biodiversity and landscapes Ì cultural heritage and Indigenous knowledge Ì interpretation and science communication Ì environmental law, policy and planning UWA’s breadth of expertise across the science disciplines is unequalled! The Master of Ecotourism provides you with the knowledge and skills needed to participate in the growing ecotourism (or nature-based) industry. A distinctive feature of the course is that it is delivered in Albany, in the south-west of Western Australia, an area that is known to be one of the most environmentally diverse, culturally rich regions with an impressive range of natural outdoor recreational opportunities and strong tourism industry partners. The environmental and social impacts of ecotourism are explored through selected case studies. The course has a strong emphasis on field work, industry case studies and the development of partnerships with the tourism industry. Graduates will have the ability to manage existing ecotourism enterprises sustainably, as well as design and implement new ventures. Graduates will also be culturally aware and have knowledge of environmental law and policy pertinent to ecotourism. Course Structure You will study the core units of: Ì Biodiversity and Landscapes Ì Exhibitions and Interpretation Ì Sport and Recreation Management Ì Core Principles of Ecotourism Ì Ecotourism in Practice Ì Environmental Planning and Management Ì Foundations in Heritage Management Career opportunities Graduates will find employment at a range of commercial ecotourism enterprises both locally and abroad, as well as government agencies (e.g. Department of Parks and Wildlife), and could also become consultants. Graduates will also be in a position to open their own businesses in ecotourism. Nature based tourism is the number one motivator for international and domestic travellers to travel in Australia according to Tourism Australia research. Taleb Rifai, Secretary General of United Nations World Tourism Organization, recently highlighted the growing trend of consumers demanding more destinations and products that match their expectations as responsible and ethical. Key informationWhile the standard timeframe for completion of this degree is two years (full time), if you have previously completed an undergraduate degree in a cognate (related) area it may be possible to complete within 1.5 years.

Example cognate areas are: Botany, Conservation Biology, Environmental Science, Geography, Indigenous Knowledge, History and Heritage, Marine Science, Natural Resource Management, Science Communication, Zoology.
