Why Chemical Engineering?

Chemical Engineer’s skills

Today our society faces very demanding challenges: we need efficient and cleantechnologies for industrial production and for the transformation of energy, technologically advanced materials, more effective drugs, a cleaner environment, abetter use of natural resources. All these apparently diversified challenges have a common element: they are based onchemical transformations and processes. Therefore, modern society needsChemical Engineering, whose principles are the basis of all the processes oftransformation of matter and energy. The Chemical Engineer is able to provide cutting-edge and sustainablesolutions, able to meet the needs of society. Using her/his chemical, physical, mathematical and engineering knowledge in a broad sense, the Chemical Engineer isable to qualitatively and quantitatively describe the chemical-physical transformations, and to design processes from the molecular level up to the industrial scale. In this sense, the Degree Course in Chemical Engineering is characterized by astrong transversality and multidiscipilinarity, and not only it does deal with activitiesaimed at obtaining chemical products or with the chemical industry in the strict sense, but the Chemical Engineer has also competences to work in all the transformationtechnologies of the manufacturing industry, in the energy production sector and in theenvironmental protection systems.

Thanks to her/his multidisciplinary and transversal formation, the ChemicalEngineer can find employment in many industrial sectors:• chemical, petrochemical, oil and gas, pharmaceutical, plastics, material,

cosmetic, metals, food and beverage, textile, detergents, energy productionand management, transformation and process industries in general

• engineering companies that design, develop and implement processes and plants• research centers and industrial laboratories• technical structures of the public administration and consultancy companies for

environment and safety.

The graduate in Chemical Engineering Master's degree is a professional figure able toface, manage and solve the technological challenges of modern society through hisparticular method of work, extremely flexible and transversal, characterized by a strongfundamental scientific preparation guaranteed by the 1° level Degree, and completedby the technical-applicative training acquired during the Master's Degree. The figure of the Master's degree in Chemical Engineering has been defined to meetthe needs of the industrial sectors of reference, innovation and development ofproduction, advanced design of both traditional and innovative and sustainablechemical processes, planning and programming, management of complex systems, both in the free profession and in engineering companies, in manufacturing or servicecompanies and in public administrations.

The Master of Science in Chemical Engineering aims to train a professional figurewho knows how to face the technological challenges of modern society through aspecific methodology. In this sense, it represents the natural completion of theBachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering.During the Master's Degree, the figure of the Chemical Engineer is consolidated andcompleted with the acquisition of advanced mathematical tools, the refinement ofengineering training in the broad sense, and the achievement of advancedknowledge in the various sectors of Chemical Engineering (chemical plants, unitoperations, industrial chemistry, environment and safety, chemical reactors, biotechnologies, etc.). The Master student Chemical Engineer can direct her/his ownpreparation in the sector that she/he considers most suitable to her/his interests andprofessional growth. The achievement of the Master of Science in Chemical Engineering requires 120credits (CFUs) to be earned by the student, at least 45 of which related to coresubjects and 15 to related disciplines. 20 credits are also reserved for the Masterthesis. The remaining credits are chosen by the student, 15 of which among eligiblecourses related to chemical engineering disciplines. At the end of the course of study, the graduate will know how to managemethodological and technical tools to face, even from an innovative point of view, problems concerning the development of production processes, the management ofprocesses for the production of goods and materials, the design of the equipment, the choice of materials and the management of the components in normal oraggressive working conditions, the residual life of the products, etc.3 pre-approved tracks plans of study (PAPS) are available for the students: ProcessEngineer, Design Engineer, Product Engineer.
