and never fires shells by hand. These precision systems control the exact placement and utilization of product.

We are serious about product evaluation and testing procedures as well, with strict grading/testing criteria. Not just any shell goes into a Melrose Pyrotechnics show. To ensure ongoing reliability, we rotate our products on an aggressive schedule. We test products based on technical criteria such as preflight times, debris ratings, and performance characteristics. We work closely with product quality from the outset, traveling to work with manufacturers even during the earliest stages of development.

Safety FirstWhen it comes to safety and training, Melrose has raised the bar for the industry with its on-site training facility and full-time staff member dedicated exclusively to training techni-cians. The curriculum developed at Melrose expands on the curriculum of the American Pyrotechnics Association. With a maximum class size of 12, Melrose invests thousands of hours of training into development of its expert team every year.

FOUR GENERATIONS OF DEDICATED PASSION

For four generations, the team at Melrose Pyrotechnics has been creating fireworks extravaganzas. The great grandfather of Mike

Cartolano, now President of Melrose Pyrotechnics, carried his craft from Italy to America at the turn of the 20th century. He settled in

Melrose Park, Illinois, where family ancestors on both sides joined forces to create family and community traditions featuring fireworks displays.

Mike’s father Anthony Cartolano collaborated with the White Sox in the development of the exploding scoreboard in 1960, beginning

a fireworks display tradition that continues to thrill Sox fans today.

Under Mike’s leadership since the early 1980s, Melrose Pyrotechnics was among the first adopters of new technology for firing shells

electronically. Precision control of every aspect of the fireworks show opened new doors for both Melrose and the global

pyromusical production industry. Adamant about pro-moting safety, Mike insists on 100 percent electronic

firing for Melrose shows—a significant investment for the company. He has also spearheaded

safety initiatives for the professional fireworks industry, devoting nearly

one-third of his own time to industry leadership to promote

standards and regulations.
