Introduction

What is e-learning?… is a catch-all term that

covers a wide range of instructional material that can be delivered on a CD-ROM or

DVD, over a local area network (LAN), or on the

Internet.

… is an umbrella term that describes learning done at a

computer, usually connected to a network,

giving us the opportunity to learn almost anytime,

anywhere.

… is the delivery of a learning, training or education program by

electronic means. E-learning involves the use of a computer or electronic device (e.g. a mobile phone) in some way to provide training, educational or learning material. (Derek Stockley 2003)

Introduction

Why e-learning?

• Communication and multimedia technologies

• Flexibility - anywhere, anytime• Student’s demand of e-learning

The domain model

• Granulation of learning materials into Learning objects (LO), (SCORM standard)

• Content metadata (LOM)

• Ontology tree

The adaptation engine

• Evaluating user preferences (prediction)

• Making decision, which path to chose for the user (content selection)

• Hiding uninteresting content and links

• Using scaled annotations for links

The authoring tool

• Content – LO (Text, Image, Audio, Video)

• LO Metadata (LOM)• Test questions associated to LO• XML format is supported• Web based application• In use as standalone ARCADE

Platform

The instructor tool

• Courses• Learning pages – setting LOs• Exam (control points)• Links• RIA Adobe Flex application

14ICETA 2008, September 12

The adaptation engine and learner app.

• Chose work path according to the learners goals and preferences (Content selection)

• Adjust page for delivery (content hiding, link annotation, link hiding) – generate xsl transformation.

• Exam handling
