Their repertory ranges from the medieval to the modern. Based in the UK, the en- semble's historical contribution to the recorded discography of early music is substantial. This Rome concert, entitled “Memoria Italiana” includes early and contemporary settings of texts by Dante and Pe- trarch, Roger Marsh’s “Il Cor Tristo”, and a new work by Fabio Vacchi. It's based upon a story by E.T.A. Hoffmann entitled "Der Sandmann" and tells the story of Coppélia who sits on her balcony all day reading, speaking to no one. Franz falls in love with her and wants to marry her, even though he is already engaged. His fiancée, Swanhilda, learns that Coppelia is actually a doll that belongs to Doctor Coppelius, the mad scientist. She decides to impersonate the doll, in order to win the love of Franz. Chaos ensues, but all is soon forgiven. Originally choreographed by Arthur St. Léon in Paris in 1870, it was restaged by Marius Petipa in St. Petersburg and revised, again, by Lev Ivanov and Enrico Cecchetti.
