This is just at the early stages of planning as we feel that with our large senior citizen population in Mataura there is a need for this ser- vice. It is envisaged that the meals would be cooked here in Mataura and then delivered around the town. These may be done through the Health Department or could be worked privately, so that you would just ask for them. The big thing for now is to see how many people would like to use the service if it were pro- vided. When we know this we can then work out the logistics of the scheme. As they say this is a feasibility study. We may even be able to use produce from the Community Garden. If you are interested in the starting of this service would you please indicate your interest by phoning Barbara Cunningham 2038910 and leaving your name and phone number so you can be contacted. Thanking you, Barbara MATAURA COMMUNITY GARDEN If you have been down by the garden you will notice that the garden is almost empty. You will also notice that we have a lorry load of cattle manure ready to be spread about. We are planning to start things next month but in the meantime we are looking for more helpers for the next season so if you are interested could you please let me know and then I can contact you when we are starting to work down there. It is not just a time for work, because there is quite a social side down there and we have a great bunch of folk already but we need more so that we can spread the work about. Hoping to hear from you. Barbara 2038910

MATAURA MEALS ON WHEELS - Are you interested?? This is just at the early stages of planning as we feel that with our large senior citizen population in Mataura there is a need for this ser-vice. The Project Mataura Board is making good progress on the redevelopment of the town centre and Bridge Street. An assessment has been completed on a number of buildings in Bridge Street as to

their structure and cost of renovat-ing. Concept designs are currently underway for a proposed heavy

traffic bypass of the 1364 vehicles per day including 250 heavy trucks. Once all necessary information is received the Project Mataura Board is looking forward to a Public Meet-ing (possibly in August), which will be well advertised, to give an overview to date. It will be helpful to have your thoughts and input.Alan Taylor

Hello Mataura,As I look out my window I can see the lawn starting to grow which is a sure sign that we are on the right side of winter and can look for-ward to warmer days very soon. Its a good time to get the lawnmower out and get it checked over. And on counting up the days we are only about 22 weeks from Christmas. The pat on the back this month must go to the people who deliver our mail, newspapers, and newsletter in all weathers. It doesn’t matter how cold or wet it is or whether the roads are covered with ice they still go out and do the job. They deserve a huge thankyou.Remember that the Gore District Council elections are coming up and nomina-tions for Mataura Commu-nity Board are part of this. Nominations will be called in August and voting takes place after that. The term is for 3 years and new mem-bers always have new ideas to offer.Until next time remember:“IT IS ALMOST IMPOS-SIBLE TO LAUGH ON THE OUTSIDE WITHOUT FEELING BETTER ON THE INSIDE’’Cheers, Margaret

PROJECT MATAURA UPDATE

MATAURA TASKFORCEGreetings everyone and hope you are all keeping well. What a busy month we have had, the big event of course being the inaugural “Swedefest” which, by the feedback we received, was enjoyed by all who attended. The day was brilliantly fine as well, which added to the success. We would especially like to acknowledge the Champions, who attended and were very honoured to have been asked.Ian Tulloch (motorsport), Annette Tulloch, Cathy Petre and Lois Millar (hockey), Alison Cormack and Colleen Bond (netball), Stu Cunningham (clay bird shooting), Shona Klimeck (bowls), Fleur Perkins (special olympics ice skat-ing) and Shannon Costello (ice skating), Russell Newton (boxing), Carol Hayes (women’s rugby) and James Dickson, who at 10, was the youngest person to be in a rodeo were all recognized at this years event.Such has been the feedback that we have already invited Astar and Gerry Forde to come back next year and they were more than happy to accept, so put the 2ND JULY 2011 in your diary for next year and we would love to see more people involved. Community involvement is what it is all about.EXERCISE CLASSES are being well attended on Wednes-day nights at the community centre at 7.30pm.Lisa and Donna are very keen to see more there also. These exercises are for everyone and the 1st 1/2 hour you sit down and do them and then, for those that want to, move into stand-ing and moving. There are cardiovascular movements and low impact, but very good for your heart and upper body.As people progress the exercises will get faster but everyone is very much at the beginners stage, so come along and have some

fun and laughter as well as treating your body. See you there on Wednesday nights.PLAYCENTRE GROUP. Playcentre Association is very happy with the attendance at the playgroup which sees 12 to 14 children there each Tuesday from 10 till 12.Parents are enjoying the contact with others and the children are always very busy.If you are new to town, come along and join in at the Playcen-tre building in Dover St, you will be made very welcome. We are now gearing up for the Christmas Gala so there will be more information about this as planning gets underway. The transport working party have received some draft ques-tions for a survey of Mataura residents to see when and if they would use a bus service to Gore and back. Once we have approved these there will be a survey done and your feed back will be critical to this getting underway so please watch out for this. The Taskforce have also been advised that funding has been granted from the Department of internal Affairs for a Community development person for Mataura which is really good news. This is a full time position for three years so we are currently starting work to secure a person for this and are working with the Community Networking Trust in Gore as they are holding the funding for us.This position will be advertised shortly and ideally we would like a local person who has contact with the local community so keep watch for this if you think this is something you could do.Well until the next time that is all from me.Laurel Turnbull

MATAURA WALKS PAMPHLETBarbara Cunningham is currently working on a series of pamphlets for walks around Mataura. These walks will take in some of our most iconic buildings and businesses. MATAURA SCHOOL We are continuing to provide an education fo-cused on literacy and numeracy in our school as well as providing opportunities for students to

develop their interests and skills in other areas. Recently we have had the Deputy Prime Minis-ter, Bill English, talk about his life and the skills he needs to do his job…reading, reading, reading! He then presented the Duffy books. We also had a fabulous Red Socks Day where we celebrated Kiwi Leadership with many other schools across the country, this raised money for the Sir Peter Blake Trust- Leadership in Action. This term we are quietly going about the business of learning and making sure that students are fully engaged each day to make progress in literacy and numeracy. We are also looking at ways of helping parents to assist in this learning as the government’s new National Standards policy expects that parents will be full partners with the education of their children. What can the community do to help? You can drop in your McCain barcodes to school so that we can try and win new gardening tools. We are using the garden later this year as a technology focus for some classes.Susan Dennison, Principal

Method:Cut fish into 2 cm pieces.Melt butter in sauce-pan, blend in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes until foaming.Gradually stir in milk and bay leaf and heat until sauce boils then remove from heat.Remove the bay leaf and add cubed fish,

cheese lemon juice and seasonings.Pour into greased ov-enware dish, sprinkle with extra cheese and breadcrumbs. Bake at 190 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until fish is coked and topping is brown.I serve this with baked vegetables or a salad or sometimes

with rice. You can add other seafood if you wish ...I also add some cooked pasta shells and a small onion to make it go further.

MATAURA BUSINESS EXPANSION AND RETENTION PROGRAMMEWe have completed almost all of the interviews with the local businesses now and are in the process of col-lating the responses. Thank you to everyone who took part. You have provided some fantastic information. It has been great to hear that our local businesses are universally positive about doing business in Mataura.

Some other common responses our interviewers heard were: • For many Mataura business owners, local support of our local businesses is the single most important factor in ensuring a viable future for businesses in our community.• All of the businesses were keen to support a ‘buy local’ marketing campaign in at least some capacity.• The most common way of recruiting new staff is by word of mouth.• Banking facilities in Mataura would make doing business easier. The Mataura Development Trust plans to have a full report available by the end of August and from that information we will be working with businesses and other agencies and community organisations to make Mataura an even better place to do business and to grow our local economy. If you would like to be involved with business development in Mataura or would like a copy of the full report when it is completed please email Meg Appleby at [email protected]
