REGROUPING (CARRYING) by Kathleen R. Wiley

When you're adding up some numbers And it's 10 or more You just send the left one flyingThe right stays on the floor

Now you've got the pattern Just remember when you're adding You send the left one flying The right stays on the floor.

Yes, you send the left one flyingThe right stays on the floor.

A dollar has one hundred centsWe say 100 pennies...A dollar's made of many coinsWe hope that we have many....A dollar has 10 dimes and yes, 4 quarters make a dollarIf ever you don't need a few, well just give me a holler..

A penny equals 1 centIt's brown and made of copper... Abe Lincoln's on the front of it... His face is a heart-stopper... The smallest coin in value is a penny...(1 cent...) If we could keep close track of it We'd know where our money went...

The next we know is worth 5 cents...We call this coin a nickel....It's good to have a few of these-If ever in a pickle-A nickel equals 5 cents...Two nickels make a dime...A dime is worth 10 pennies...We use them all the time...

To make a quarter...Well, let's see... 3 nickels and a dime...Or 2 dimes and a nickel..... Or just pennies-25!!! Or try 5 pennies and 4 nickels.,.5 pennies, 2 dimes...Or take 5 nickels, that's a quarter-All worth 25!!!

Whichever combination that you choose to make a quarter...The value of each coin you must remember. That's an order!!!One quarter's 25 cents, 2 quarters equals 50... 3 quarters equals 75...And isn't that just nifty?

So in review, let's see what we can do to make a dollar....100 pennies,10 dimes, 20 nickels, 4 quarters...There're many other ways that we could make some combination; But we'll learn these so we'll feel good in money situations....!!!!

TIME FOR MATH

Well, it's time for our mathSo let's get on the path...Get our books, papers, pencils and supplies...And then we'll think....We'll puzzle and we'll struggle But we'll keep on working...Until we're math-wise...

Days, Weeks, Months, Years

by Kathleen Wiley

There are 7 days in any week we know....7 days to work and play and grow..So listen as we say them now for you...Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday too....

Monday is the first day and some think it is the worst day...Because Monday means the weekend's gone and we're all back at work...!!!But Tuesday is the second day and Wednesday is the middle day... And Thursday means that Friday's just around the corner..

And then here comes the weekend... we have one whole day to play in..That is Saturday, when we do chores and then play till it's dark....Then Sunday is our rest day, some think it is our best day....It's a day to think and ponder and to contemplate our heart...

There are 7 days in every week we hear....4 weeks in a month, 12 months in a year....10 years in a decade and we see.....100 years we call a century....

So in our timeline are no fears...It's days and weeks and months and years...And decades and then centuries...That make up life for you and me...

So let's improve so every dayOur consciences will have to say...That we are stronger, braver tooBecause we've learned this little tune....

So when many days and nights roll on...And years come and go and youth is gone....We will feel OK if we can say...We lived our days and weeks and months and years all in a happy way..

Dividing With Decimals

by Kathleen Wiley

When you divide with decimals....You just divide like a regular problem....But look at the divisor first......

If there's a decimal in the divisor.....Move it to the right....to the end of the line....But count how many numbers that you pass by......

Then take a look at the dividend .......To see if there is a decimal therein.....If there is....move it to the right as many numbers as you did in the divisor....And then you pop it up in to the quotient....Like a whale popping out of the ocean.....And now you are ready to divide.....

But if there's no decimal in the divisor....Then you can just feel that much wiser......Move your focus now and look at the dividend....If there's a decimal in the dividend....Keep it right where it always has been....But pop it also up into the quotient too.......

But if there's a decimal in the divisor.....But no decimal showing in the dividend....The divisor's decimal moves completely to the right.........Count how many numbers you just moved it....Add that many zeros to the dividend....And now, you are ready for a surprise............

Now if there's no decimal showing in the dividend...Did you know it was really there at the end...????So just put it there, then move it past all those zeros.....And then you pop it up in to the quotientLike a whale popping out of the ocean......See how your knowledge of the decimal grows.....

So you see, to divide with decimals,You just divide like a regular problem...Just be mindful of the place where the decimal is...If it's in the divisor move it to the right....The other times you may have to think twice.....But we know you'll soon become a DECIMAL WHIZ!!!!

EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS

EquivalentFractionsMeans that fractions mean the same

EquivalentFractionsDivide and multiply....yes that's their game.

For one third...Here's what you do...Pick a big denominator that the three divides into..DIVIDE, then multiply THAT NUMBER byThe numerator and that's all you do.

So one third is two sixths, and four twelfths, five fifteenths too....So carry on... as life goes on....'Cause equivalent fractions are fun to do.

Page 10: Math: Sing Your Way to Easy Learningdingledine5.weebly.com/uploads/2/5/2/8/2528106/math-sing...7 days to work and play and grow.. So listen as we say them now for you... Monday, Tuesday,

A fraction is a tiny part of something A fraction is the tiny part you get A fraction is one number on another With a line between them separating them!

The numerator is the tiny numberIt's on the top, and it's the part you getAnd on the bottom's the denominatorIt's the biggest number in this problem yet.

So take a whole ..... divide it into piecesAnd make sure all the pieces are the sameThen take one out... and now you've got a fractionAnd you're now prepared to play the fraction game...

And so one one half...means you have one of two parts..And so one third...means you get one of three...As the denominator grows the part shrinks..Leaving smaller pieces then for you and me.....

Greater More, Fewer Less

by Kathleen Wiley

How many fewer and how many less...Have something in common ...Shall I let you guess? The process is easy ...surprisingly so...Subtraction is always the best way to go...

RAP: Bobby has 5 cats and Billy has 12...HOW MANY FEWER has Bobby than Bill?HOW MANY FEWER's the clue that we know....SUBTRACTION is always the best way to go...

So 12 minus 5? We say HOW MANY LESS....Is 5 than 12, but we don't need to guess..........................................Forever and always we know this is fact...That HOW MANY LESS is a clue to subtract!!!

But how many greater and how many more...Are questions that sometimes we think are a chore...But don't let them fool youThey're easily done...Subtraction's the process here too...This is fun!!!

RAP: Martha has 9 dogs and Flora has 4...HOW MANY GREATER has Martha than Flor?9 minus 4 is the problem we see...Subtraction's the process for you and for me...

Annie has 7 dolls...Trixie has 6...HOW MANY MORE dolls has Annie than Trix?....HOW MANY MORE you may THINK would mean add....But HOW MANY MORE means subtract!!!!! Ask my dad!!!.

So finding the answer is easy for you...Whenever you hear these you'll know what to do...With HOW MANY FEWER, LESS, GREATER or MORE...Always subtraction will get the right score....

Long division...Takes much precisionBut if you just can catch the visionYou never need fight indecision

Yes, long divisionSo much fun is inThe learning how to make decisionsIn how we do our math

Well, the divisor.....Is that old outsider... Next see the shelter and the number that's in?Why that's the number called the dividend!!!

So take the divisor.... You'll be so much wiser.. Decide how often the divisor goesInto the dividend.

Then put that number on top of the shelter...That number now is called a quotient...I hope now you've got the notionTo multiply it by the divisor...And put that number 'neath the dividendAnd now you draw a line...

Keep the numbers in line...Just subtract them fine...And see if numbers are left there...Or in the didvidend anywhere...

If so you bring down one... Or maybe two...Now you can call that a remainder...And now your almost through...

Long Division

Now see if the divisorGoes into the remainder....If so.... you put it in the quotient.....I hope that now you've got the notion.....

To multiply it.....By that old divisor.......You draw a line...subtract... and bring it downContinue till you're through.

Now our song is done..And your the one...To show that this is easy math..As long as you continue one the path...

So make decisions to catch the vision...Of enjoying long devision...So take my advise...

Yes long divisionTakes so much precisionBut if you just can catch the visionYou never need fight indecision

Yes long division So much fun is in The learning how to make decisionsAnd yeah.... we love our mathl!!

Mixed Fractionsby Kathleen Wiley

In fractions, when the numerator's bigger than the denominatorThat's a show-stopper'Cause that's called improperSo just divide that numerator by that little denominatorAnd with that actionYou've made a mixed fraction

Let's say the numerator's 9 and the denominators 5Well, just divide...that 5 into 9Well, that goes once but there's 4 leftSo now your fraction's one and four fifthsAnd now that action....has made your mixed fraction

Page 14: Math: Sing Your Way to Easy Learningdingledine5.weebly.com/uploads/2/5/2/8/2528106/math-sing...7 days to work and play and grow.. So listen as we say them now for you... Monday, Tuesday,

When multiplying......2 digit numbers.....with 11s, we know always we'll have fun....

We'll put 11....on the bottom....of the problem and we know we're almost done....

We'll add the top two digit numbers.....both together till we have a tidy sum....

Then squeeze that number right between....the 2 digit numbers. Now, let's have some fun....

Seventy two....times 11....Well, at first it seems so very hard to do....

But we'll show you....it's a breeze.....You just watch and then you'll want to do it too....

We'll add the 7 and the 2.....That makes 9...we'll squeeze it right between....

The 7 and the 2....The answer's 792, don't you see?

But if by adding the 2 digit numbers....the sum of them will equal 10 or more....

Well, that's no problem.....I'll just show you.....how to fix it so that then you'll know the score...

The right-hand number stays the same......but the middle number's now the right side of.....

The sum....of that 2 digit number...then carry and add the extra 1.

So 59....times 11....well the 9 will simply just remain the same....

Then add the 5....and the 9....that's 14 and now here's where you win the game....

Just put the 4 in the middle....add the 1 to the 5 and get a 6....

So the answer's six hundred forty nine....Now we've learned 11s and we know the tricks!

Multiplying With 11's

Multiplying with Decimalsby Kathleen Wiley

When multiplying decimals look on the top lineIs there a decimal there? If there is, put your pencil there and count to the rightIs there another decimal there anywhere?

If there is, count between them, and then you will knowHow many numbers to count off there will beTake that number, count from right to left, and then you can showWhere the decimal in the product will be

Ahhhh, but what if there is only one decimal there?Well, that will work out just fineYou just still put your pencil on the decimal thereBut now just count to the end of that line

And that's the only number that you will needTo show you know where this decimal goesTake that number, count from right to left and then you will showThat your knowledge of the decimal grows!!

The ODD Number Songby Kathleen Wiley

I need to find the ODD number, and so I look to the rightAnd when I find the ODD number, it will be 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9

RAP:The odd numbers we know are 1, 3, 5, 7, 9,Each time we see them we think they are fineSo 21, 43, 65, 89 all are odd caused by the number on the right

The farthest right number's the one that we noticeThe others don't matter, so don't get uptight!!2, 4, 6, 8 can all be to the left. The deciding number's on the farthest right

So 24,681 is an odd number because of the one86,425 is an odd number because of the five42,683 is an odd number because of the three68,429 is an odd number because of the nine

And so it goes on forever and ever. We look to the number that is on the rightSo let's sing our song again and again and we'll remember'Cause odd numbers are 1, 3, 5, 7, 9

I need to find the ODD number, and so I look to the rightAnd when I find the ODD number, it will be 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9

Perimeter, Circumference, Area, Volume

by Kathleen Wiley

Perimeter.... It takes the long way 'round..... because it measures...... till all the sides are found.....So take the numbers.... then add them up or down.... and now you've got the perimeter....RAP:All around the edge of something if you walk or if you're running...Just add up the sides you see to get PERIMETER to be.

Circumference..... the distance 'round the earth...... circumference measures a round object's girth.......And here's the secret.... there's yet another word.... circumference is a periphery.

To find circumference..... pi times diameterOr two times pi, then times the radiusSo pick your preference.. but just don't make a fuss..'Cause both will find the circumference.RAP:Now circumference we are doing its a circle for our viewing

We can just go 'round and 'round 'cause never is the end found.

The area..... well, when you measure it.... you just multiply the length times the widthSo just remember..... that when you're measuring..... that length times width equals area.RAP:The area is found by multiplying length and width....keep on tryingSo now you know it's fun to see what area will always be... For volume..... it's length...times width...times height...You just multiply them all to get it right...When you need volume... well, just don't get uptight...It's length.... times width.... times height. RAP: The volume means what is containedInside containers....it's so plainTo see that length times width times heightIs what will make your answer right.... So when you measure make sure you're accurate'Cause it's important.... to not get in a rut....Of sloppy habits so just enjoy the Pure pleasure of math measurements!!

Range, Mean, Medium, and Modeby Kathleen Wiley

Range, mean, median and modeAre confusing, so I have been told...But if I may be so bold...They're not confusing when you know.....

The range is the difference betweenThe greatest number and the least....

The average of numbers is the mean....

The mode's the one most often seen...

The median's the middle one...

And now our song is almost done.....So if you want to have some fun...Choose math...the best thing under the sun!!

Reducing Fractionsby Kathleen Wiley

Reducing fractions is an easy thing for you,Just pick a number that you can divide intoThe denominator and the numerator too, And you will find reducing fractions fun to do!!

The quickest way to do it is to take the numerator, And see if it goes evenly into the denominatorIf it does, write that number below the line,And if the numerator goes into itself one time

But if that won't work, here's what you do,Pick the biggest number that divides evenly intoThe denominator and the numerator too,And you will find reducing fractions fun to do

The first one we'll do is 4/12, so take a look and then you must decide for yourselfWhat's the biggest number that goes into 12 and 4? Yes, 2 but 4 is our best score. So 4 into 4 goes once you see and 4 into 12...you know is 3.So once 4/12 is now 1/3...and you'll fly through reducing fractions easy as a bird.

The next one we'll do is 8/16. Just take a minute and you must decide what you thinkWhat's the biggest number that goes into 16 and 8? Yes...2...yes 4...but 8 is greatYes 8 into 8 goes just one time, and 8 into 16 goes just twiceSo once 8/16...now 1/2...and don't you find that you are now enjoying your math?

But before we end this little song, what if one just comes out wrong?Sometimes a fraction won't reduce...you can try all day...but it's no use

So let's look at one called 8/15. Just take a minute and you must decide what you thinkDoes 2 go....or 3....or 4...or 5....? No none will go, so rest your mind.

It's trial and error and it takes time, but you can tell you like it just fineWhen everything seems fun to do, that's a sign YOU'RE fine and math is too!!

'Cause reducing fractions is an easy thing to doJust pick a number that you can divide intoThe denominator and the numerator tooAnd you will find reducing fractions fun to do!

Regrouping with Subtraction (Borrowing)

by Kathleen Wiley

When the smaller number's on the top

And you've got to subtract

You just go next door and borrow from your neighbor

That's a fact!!

Then you take the 1 that you borrowed

Put it beside the smaller number

Now you've got a BIGGER number

And you CAN subtract!!!

The Rounding Songby Kathleen Wiley

When rounding a number from ones to tens, just look at the ones' place...Is it a 5?5 or above then you round up the tens, but 4 or below you say "Zero's the guy." RAP:14's a number that rounds down to 10.... like 13, and 12, and then e lev enBut 15 and 16...they round up to 20... like 17, 18 and 19...That's plenty!!

44, 43, 42, 41, all round to 40 when rounding is done..But 45, 46 all up to 49, they round to 50 So rounding is FINE!!When rounding a number from tens to hundreds......Just look at the tens' place........IS IT A 5?5 or above........?? Then you round UP the HUNDREDS...But 4 or below ....you say..." ZERO's the guy!!!"RAP :So....Two eighty five rounds to 300 when, you look at the 8.....it's above 5 so then...The whole number rounds to the next hundred's place....And we'll learn this so there's no egg on our face!!!

Six thirty rounds to 600 we know....and four ninety eight rounds to 500 so...3 hundred fifty and 368, both round to 400..Isn't this great? When rounding a number from hundreds to thousands...Just look at the hundreds' place...is it a 5?5 or above....??? then you round UP the THOUSANDS....But 4 or below .....you say "ZERO's the guy!!!"RAP:Six hundred twenty three rounds to 1000, And six thousand four hundred eighty five rounds to 6000 So stay with this pattern and see...If you don't think rounding's as fun as can be!!!

On and on math goes and rounding is such funWe round to the left but we look to the right...Looking to the right tells us where to round it...To round up or round down....they're both what we like!!!And so it goes.... 82 rounds to 80..But 86 rounds up to 90 so maybeIf we learn this rap we'll excel in our mathBy using our rounding skills to smooth our path.So it continues......when rounding a number.....Check the number..... TO THE RIGHT......of the one you desire...If it's 4..... or below.....then you ROUND DOWN TO ZERO......But IF YOU ROUND UP.......IT MUST BE 5 OR HIGHER!!!

Seconds, Minutesby Kathleen Wiley

60 seconds in a minute....

60 minutes in an hour.....

24 hours in a day.....

30 days in a month and sometimes we know 31....

But February we know's 28....

Except on Leap Year February has 29....

Then that year's 366....

But only every 4th year so we don't have to worry....

We'll use that year to play some neat tricks...

We usually have 365 days in one year....

That's the figure we most often use.....

We get that figure from the time it takes our earth to orbit...

Once around the sun.... so here's our news....

We'll make good use of every second, minute and hour....

Day and week and month and year....

So as we face the future our confidence will shine through....

As we know we'll have nothing to fear....

Shape Upby Kathleen Wiley

A SQUARE is a formation that has 4 equal sides....No matter how you turn it...It looks the same...so learn it...Squares have 4 right angles....All are 90 degrees....So upside down or right side up or sideways you'll be pleased....

RECTANGLES are formations that have parallel sides...Their sides are at right angles (They are all 90 degree angles...)But 2 sides are shorter and 2 others are long....And if you learn this little tune you'll never get them wrong...

A PARALLELOGRAM has 4 parallel sides...But they are at an angle...They're not like a rectangle....No...a parallelogram's sides are at a slant....But we know you can work with them so never say you can't.

A TRAPEZOID is funny looking we all know.....The top line is the shorter one The bottom line is longer so When looking at the other two sides we know at a glance...That they would meet at some point if they were given a chance....

So as we learn these little shapes we know you will seeThat each of them have parallel lines somewhere for you and meSo watch the sides and top and bottom of each shape And when you find the parallel lines you will feel great!!!

Similar....in math....means the same....

Similar....in math....means the same shape....

Bigger....or smaller....or shorter....or taller....

Yes, similar means the shame shape....in math!!!

But exactly the same size and shape is congruent....

When one's on top of the other you can't tell they're two of them....

Congruent shapes are a sight for sore eyes....

'Cause congruent shapes means the same shape and the same size!!!

The sum is the answer when you add....

If you don't believe it, just ask my dad....

The difference is the answer when you subtract....

So let's learn this....it's a helpful fact!

The Measurment Songby Kathleen Wiley

A millimeter's a tiny measurementA centimeter's bigger they say...But it's a cinchThe little inchIs much, much bigger than they.

Twelve inches makes up a foot, I know..And three feet make a yardBut you'll be the leaderIf you've got a meter'Cause 39 inches is hard.............to beat!

Now we've got a much longer measurementAnd hearing it might make you smile.... But 5,280 feet Exactly makes up a mile!!!

Trianglesby Kathleen Wiley

A triangle has 3 sides. A triangle has 3 angles. So let's try them on for size.....and let's get them all untangled.

An isosceles has 2 equal sides. A right triangle has a right angle.A scalene triangle has no equal sides-so with him you must never tangle.

A triangle has 3 sides. A triangle has 3 angles.We've just tried 3 on for size......and we've got those 3 untangled.

An acute triangle has all acute angles....yes, all less than 90 degrees. An obtuse triangle has just one big angle that's bigger than 90 degrees.

An equilateral triangle.......has 3 equal sides and 3 equal angles. An equiangular triangle.......has 3 equal sides and 3 equal angles.

An angle is formed by two rays that have the same end point....and that's called a vertex. When two angles have the same angle when measured.....then they're called congruent....They're perfect!!!

So triangles are polygons.......A polygon is a closed figure.........Whose sides are all line segments.......and in construction they're rigid.

So many triangles are other triangles......An obtuse can be a scalene...An equilateral and an equiangular are so cute, they're acute-See what I mean?

A triangle has 3 sides-A triangle has 3 angles... And we've tried them all on for size and we've got them all untangled

Page 35: Math: Sing Your Way to Easy Learningdingledine5.weebly.com/uploads/2/5/2/8/2528106/math-sing...7 days to work and play and grow.. So listen as we say them now for you... Monday, Tuesday,

An ACUTE angle's less than 90 degrees....

An OBTUSE angle's more than 90 degrees.......

A RIGHT angle's right at 90 degrees... So tell me, what's your angle, please?

A straight line is one hundred and eighty degrees...

It's a HORIZONTAL. VERTICAL or DIAGONAL, please..,

But 360 degrees we've found

Is a CIRCLE that we know just goes around and around.

So measuring an angle is pleasure for you...

Just remember a right angle is a corner true....

So when you try to remember each angle....

Just relax because this sons has got them all untangled!!!!

You're in Great Shapeby Kathleen Wiley

A pentagon has 5 equal sides... a hexagon has 6...An octagon has 8 equal sides...so tell me which you pick.

RAP:A pentagon has 5 sides....and each side is just the same size....It's a big government building in Washington D.C...It looks just like a house....and if I lived there as a mouseI might just be confused because all 5 sides look the same to me!

A pentagon has 5 equal sides....a hexagon has 6....An octagon has 8 equal sides....so tell me which you pick

RAP:A hexagon has 6 sides....whether upside down or right side....And each side is just the same size for our hexagon, we know...So if hexagons are 6 sides....do you think there's a correct side?Well, just turn it....tell us what you think....correct side? Yes or No?

A pentagon has 5 equal sides....a hexagon has 6....An octagon has 8 equal sides....so tell me which you pick

RAP:An octagon has 8 sides.... Spin it, turn it, where's the great side? It's the same size all around.....so let me tell you what I know.If octagons have 8 sides..... can you picture now a stop sign?Because stop signs are the octagon shapes.... that tell you "Don't Go!"
