Math Word Problems of

the Week

2nd grade

3. Problems: Weeks 1-30

In the following 30 word problems, your second grade students will be able to think analytically and learn how

to solve problems using many different mathematical strategies. All of these word problems are “real life” situations and students will be able to relate to them. What’s great about these word problems is that your

students will also be writing across the curriculum and practice answering in complete sentences!

Each word problem is designed to take one week and

should take no more than 10 minutes per day.

Monday – Read the word problem twice, circle the important information and underline key words that will help determine the operation. (See sample of Day 1) Tuesday – Reread the word problem. Answer questions #1 and #2: What do you know? and What do you need to know? Wednesday – Reread the word problem. Answer question #3: What do you need to do to solve the problem? -Guide students by writing the algorithm and picture with them. Remind them that drawing a picture is just as important as writing and solving the problem. Thursday – Reread word problem. Answer question #4: Answer the question. Friday – Reread the word problem. Answer question #5. Does your answer make sense? If you have any questions, PLEASE, don’t hesitate to email me at: [email protected].

Make a copy of the word problems for each student. I’ve done it two different ways, in an annual Word Problem of the Week booklet and double sided for two weeks at a time. I found that making an annual packet of all the word problems was best. We were able

to go back during the year and review!

Also, I gave each of my students a copy of the questions to keep in their Math folders.

I also made a class-sized poster of the questions to refer to when guiding students

through the process of answering in complete sentences.

Questions: 1. What do you know? 2. What do you need to know? 3. What do you need to do to solve the problem? 4. Answer the question in a complete sentence. 5. Check your work. Does your answer make sense?
