MAthSAYA is an annual, non-profit, three-Saturday event that commits to public high school students who are gifted in the field of Mathematics. Each Saturday event holds various activities like mini competitions and group dynamics, that aim to make these chosen representatives appreciate Mathematics without the pressure of tests and conventional classroom activities.

ABOUT THE SHOW MATHSAYA '09

Goals Mathsaya will address the organization’s goal of increasing the number of people who appreciate math and strengthening their appreciation by enriching their knowledge on the subject matter.

Objectives The project Mathsaya makes the Ateneo Mathematics Society closer to its vision-mission because through this, AMS members are able to share the knowledge and passion on Mathematics to the public high school students. This project allows AMS to provide fun and innovative activities that will make Mathematics more fun and exciting subject for the high school students. If taken in a long-term perspective, such chosen students may actually be enticed to take up a Math course in the future, probably in the Ateneo de Manila University.

Success Indicators1. There are 120 student participants.2. Per day, at least 80% of the participants are present.3. The score in the evaluation if the topic is new and interesting to the participants should be at least 8.4. There should be at least 20 volunteers per day, excluding the core and the execom.5. Get a score of at least 8 in the project evaluation.

The first day started with the diagnostic test in ISO conference rooms 3 and 4. The TNT’s then took care of the group dynamics, particularly the Pukpukan game for the participants. The participants participated in various group dynamics activities until lunch time in the ISO cafeteria. After eating, one batch of participants watchedadocumentaryaboutFermat’sLastTheorematBel308,whiletheotherbatchgotinvolvedwithcomputermathgames.Dr.NinettedelasPeñastookcareofthistopic.Thetwobatchesthenexchangedwhatthey were doing – the first one played in the math lab while the second watched the documentary. After the exchange,thetwobatchesweregatheredinBellarmine308forMr.RodenDavid’slectureonSolvingLinearSystems Using Matrices. After the lecture, the participants were given snacks and day one was concluded.

The program started late at 9 am in the morning and the first lecturer, Mr. Ramil Bataller from the mathematics department, came early so the group dynamics (Facial Expressions) was temporarily removed from the program and Mr. Bataller proceeded with the lecture. He discussed the topic of Counting and Probability for two hours. Facial Expressions was played after the lecture, and the hosts, took care of entertaining the participants while waiting for lunch. After lunch, Mr. Enrico Paolo Bugarin, also from the mathematics department, gave a lecture on Problem Solving Techniques. The students were then led outside Escaler Hall, onto SEC field, to play Mamera. After the game, they were led back to the hall to listen to Julius Samson and Patricia Anne Sarmiento give a career talk, AMS’ RA department head and president, respectively. The Trivia game followed, but since only a few questions were used for the actual planned game, a Pera O Bayong style game was spontaneously created to utilize the remaining questions. Several questions were still left after that second game, so these questions were

flashed to the crowd. A video to recount the first day was shown and the project heads then gave a short message to end the day.

This day started with the post-test to determine the length of what the students learned from the seminar. Afterthetest,thestudentsweremadetoplayFamilyFeudandgroup____wontheevent.Lunchfollowed;thestudents and TNT’s were encouraged to practice their cheering routine after eating. The program resumed with the groups performing their routines. Group ten topped the cheer pyramid with their ecstatic and energetic cheer. The Amazing Race followed the cheering contest with group five finishing first. The stations spanned most of Ateneo – from the Baseball field, ISO, covered courts, Barangka steps, JSEC, Matteo Ricci, and others. The students were exhausted and some even complained, but they all agreed that the event was enjoyable and new because it was physically stimulating. This was just right for the snacks were given out after the race. The students were given time to rest and take a break then a video recounting the entire three-day event was shown. The evaluation, awarding, and graduation events followed. The program ended in picture taking sessions to serve as documentation and remembrance for both parties – organizers and participants.
