Travel season startedHolland >> Korea >> Holland >> Venezuela

In the start of May in Holland boy it was cold! On the day before I left to Korea temperatures where only 7 C, quite a contrast from tropical Maui. Not long and the booties would’ve had to come out again; how bizarre for this time of the year. The winds didn’t really stop blowing from the North, but at least it was 15-25 knots to get out on the water and get wet, for Fanatic testing some new improved 2011 prototype boards.

As the volcanic eruption in Iceland was still happening on a small scale, airspace remained open throughout Europe and via Helsinki I travelled to South Korea on Finnair. The papers were filled with news about the attack from North Korea on a South Korean vessel, but no sign of any problems traveling from international to domestic airports. Such opposite weather to Europe, nice and hot summer type weather again, quick to grab my sunnies and board shorts.

The forecast for Korea was light, but there was hope as the direction SW is favorable for a thermic breeze. Sure enough on the first day we immediately got 3 rounds in. On 2 occasions I just missed out on the final by 1 place and the last round I made the wrong choice of equipment. 11th after the first day could have been worse. But unfortunately after that there were only light wind races which was really tough, clearly I wasn’t prepared for light wind. A 16th place is not how I anticipated to start the new season and surely hope it will be my discard and improve from here.

After the event in Korea I spent a day in Holland with family, just a real quick stop over on the way to Venezuela for the Margarita Wild Winds! The traditional Slalom event of the Caribbean, Gonzalo ended up winning followed by myself in 2nd and Ben vd Steen in 3rd. For all of us it was the 2nd year in a row competing at this event being fortunate to get an invitation again, it was cool to come back and meet the friends we made last year and a lot of new experiences too.

Not as much wind as the last year but 10 fun races and parties every night. In the long distance I finished again 2nd, right behind my comrade Ben returning to the beach early and getting welcomed by the crowd before the official prize giving. Packing up and this time it took 2 full days to get home, recharge the batteries and hoping for a lot of wind and spectacular racing on the TR-6 in Costa Brava at the next PWA race.

Enjoying every momentMay was a great month for me. On the 5th of May I received an early perfect birthday present... 1st place PWA World Cup freestyle Austria.

Getting back on Bonaire the local newspapers were full of my pictures on their front pages for four days straight. it’s nice and great to have the media putting so much attention. My birthday was on the 24th of May so winning the Austria event was my great birthday present. Thank you God.

From the 9th until the 30th of May we had the crew of SEEK FILM on Bonaire filming for the CHILDREN OF THE WIND documentary. Three weeks of interviewing and filming my whole family, how we started windsurfing, and how we lived and were raised. Also all the people who have helped us along the way and many more things I can’t remember, but for sure this will be a great documentary and for windsurfing and Bonaire it will be a boost. These guys had lenses that cost 60-80 thousand dollars and cameras that cost way over 40k, so it was like we are on Hollywood or something. I want to say thank you to the whole SEEK film crew for putting this time and effort to do this for us.

My grandfather on my father side had his 80th birthday on the 14th of May and we had almost the whole family at the party. It was great to be at the party and meeting some family members that I didn’t know. My grandfather is a farmer and I lived with him for two years before I started windsurfing, so I still remember what i ate when I lived there. We had a lot of food and most of all we ate traditional food and I truly enjoy it.. I like the old cooking. It’s very healthy. We ate Iguana, Goat, Cow on the grill, boiled Iguana eggs, fishes, iguana soup and a lot more.

As far the days went in the month of May, the wind slowly started to fade away. I only sailed for about 13 days after I came back from Austria. I spent one day sailing on my slalom and formula gear because it’s nice to go out on the big formula board and fast slalom boards. I just enjoy windsurfing. Other then that I spent most of the time doing freestyling and when there was no wind I spent time replying to magazines and interviews and spending time with my friends and talking to my mother who now lives back on Bonaire... you know... catching up on the old times.

The Governor of Bonaire had an honor for us and was grateful with Amado winning the IFCA WORLD at age 15 and with me winning the PWA WORLD CUP freestyle in AUSTRIA so we both received this wonderful big plaque.

I am now officially a team rider of Maui Ultra fins and I still need to get confirmation from Mystic so maybe in my next report I can let you know more about it. While I am writing this report there’s no wind on Bonaire and it will be like this for another five days. I am off to Lanzarote on the 24th of june .

Ciao my fellow windsurfers. I’ll catch ya’ll on the next reportTaty Frans NB-9

May

is g

one?

It’s amazing how fast time flies once you get back up to the Gorge! Unfortunately for us, May provided little along the lines of solid spring sailing, and more of, well, cold rain. In between the rain we got some good days here and there, but I think it’s safe to say everybody has their sights set on a much sunnier/windier June!

And man is there a lot going on for June! First off, pop into BigWinds www.bigwinds.com and check out our brand new 130-180 booms! Just released, these booms are the ‘new 140’s!’ I got a chance to ride one out at Arlington last week on a 4.2, just awesome!!! And if that wasn’t good enough, check out this little treat I saw in at Gorge Surf Shop www.gorgesurfshop.com Is that a 2010/2011 3.5 Legend? What, are there 2.9s as well? That’s right, besides the full lineup of 2008-2010 gear featured at Gorge Surf Shop, we have just brought in, new to the lineup of Legends, the much anticipated 2.9 and 3.5 for the blasting days! Ingrid got to try these out over on Maui in March and just loved them! As always, be sure to swing by the van on one of these soon to come windy days to try anything out!

Maui Monthly no.61. May ’10.8

Page 9: Maui Monthly no.61. May 2010

And you can also come check us out this year at the CGWA Windfest, June 26-27th at the Event Site!

Lastly at the end of the month we have a few very cool things going down up in this neck of the woods. First is the re-birth of the Pistol River wave competition http://wavebash.weebly.com/. Along with Whit Poor, I will be hosting a free informal wave camp for any amateur/junior/women looking to participate! And, as a part of the event, ShadowBox and EpicSessions.tv will be hosting another Jumpoff similar to the one featured on Maui during late March http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVtRJDG60RM. Following this one-day Jumpoff, we will also be testing a longer-term version in Hood River from June 28-July 8th, allowing all riders two weeks to go get the best conditions the gorge has to offer! Head to http://www.epicsessions.tv for more information about the Jumpoff series!

That’s it from us here, hope to see you on the water soon!

May has come and gone and we have now finalized all the 2011 wave/freestyle designs for production. This past month also marks my 5 year anniversary with MauiSails. Every day I feel stoked to be designing toys for the sport I love with gurus like Barry and Phil. I’m excited about this year’s wave range as the sails have evolved even further in the direction of light handling and smooth power. We have also introduced some new sizes and materials.

The 2011 Legend is the ultimate fine-tuned side-shore wave sail. Progressive evolution every year has resulted in a soft feel and flawless transition from driving power to smooth release while wave riding. The leech tension is very progressive from clew to head resulting in a responsive feel but still maintaining excellent flex. This year we complemented the existing sizes with a new 2.9 and 3.5 designed to satisfy the desires of those who sail in the worlds windiest locations.

The exciting Ghost-XT range has expanded to include sizes from 4.7 to 6.7. Evolved from Legend development, the Ghost-XT incorporates similar shaping adapted to the extensive use of ultra-light and strong Technora scrim. The Ghost-XT offers the best in high-tech, light weight performance. The performance of this sail is such that you can’t imagine until you sail one.

The Global returns as our powerhouse wave sail for those who like a bit more juice and back hand input. The sail is tougher than ever with a 100% x-ply construction.

The Locos have received plenty of love this year with new 4.0 and 4.4 designs developed on a 370 mast. The other sizes have had plenty of attention too with a slightly flatter upper profile and more progressive leech tension for ultimate response in modern freestyle maneuvers.

The popular Switch free-ride range returns for those who need to go fast but also like nice handling in case they want to throw down some moves. Luff curve and shaping refinements improve the balance of these versatile RAF sails.

Slalom is on!Slalom is on! May was a pretty busy month. The PWA slalom tour started so I had a lot of expectations to see what would happened with my new sails. I decided on the last minute to do the Defi Wind instead of Korea. But on the very last second some family losses made me stay back home with my closest ones.

I went to Margarita instead where I knew I could put to test my new sails. Peter and Benny van der Steen were going too so I knew it was gonna be a great event. They had a long trip back from Korea.

I manage to sail one day before the event with the 7.6 and the 7.0 for the first time around some good guys. I sailed a lot with Wilhelm Schurman, Diony Guadagnino, Ricardo Campello and Alex Carache. At the end of the day my speed was very good so i was happy with the results of the new designs. I new that our sails always have better performance around marks so being a bit quicker already it was a very good sign.

We manage to do 10 rounds in Margarita, so that was pretty amazing considering we had a couple of days without wind.

This year there was a very good Race Director Oscar Martines, who set a great course. Very similar to the PWA we had a very long first leg and then four more shorter legs.

Maui Monthly no.61. May ’10.18

Page 19: Maui Monthly no.61. May 2010

I had a slow start the first day. Actually I had a too "fast start" as I went overearly on the first race. After that I scored a 3rd, 2nd, 2nd and a 1st. So things were getting better. I was getting use to my sail/board combo 7.6 TR-6 and SL66. On the last race of the day i got stuck on the first mark and scored a 6.

The following days we didnt have much wind so we dedicted the day to do some other fun activities. We had a cayak, SUP race where i finish 2nd in the SUP. Then we had a beach soccer tournament so it was a lot of fun. And then we had a raceboard race where i score a third going on a tandem board with a local kid.

The final day with lighter wind we did 4 rounds which I won. This gave me the 1st place, Peter finished 2nd and Ben 3rd. I race on the 8,4 and the SL78.

Now I am getting ready to leave to Costa Brava.

There’s an old saying around the stock market that you sell in May, then go away. I don’t really understand that since I’m not an ’investor’, but I can sure say that here at MauiSails, if the level of packing and shipping I have been doing lately is any clue, we are definitely not going away anytime soon. Here in Hawaii we hold the inventory that provides delivery to all our growing U.S. mainland customers. They already participate in larger pre-season ordering now and take direct shipments at the beginning of the season, but when they need items to complete an order locally, we become that source. And thus my hours of learning about FedEx rules, how to pack the odd size stuff for safe shipment (ever try sending a 250 Formula boom through the mail??), and in general, keeping the inventory correct and up-to-date. So thanks to our increasing customer satisfaction, I believe May has been a great indicator for the rest of the year.

May was also exciting for us because of the explosive return of Taty Frans to the top spot on the podium in PWA Freestyle. What a great way to begin the season. Taty is such a pleasure to work with and always has a smile for everyone and never a harsh word. It must be something about island life that makes you so appreciative of everything. And then at the end of the month we got word that Gonzalo won the HighWinds regatta in Venezuela with Peter taking second. It’s a small event but in very windy conditions, so the training for Costa Brava should serve them well.

Cornelia continues to evolve into less of a work barge and more of a comfortable cruiser. Aside from getting the chart table finished, and a few book shelves added, basically we are moving the heavy construction stuff off and getting into the painting and varnish. Lucky for us, my wife, Samantha, has discovered what happens when you take thirty years of varnish off of rare old teak wood, sand it carefully, then re-varnish. What once looked like old red wood is now glowing golden brown and beautiful. All the lower quality plywood panels are now bright white inside, locker interiors are all fresh painted, and the trim is this fantastic old wood. There a some screw holes and odd marks on some of the pieces, but the tone of the wood is so fine you don’t even notice those.

On the last day of the month we cleaned it all up, stowed the crap away, and went for a nice sail with Fred Haywood, his girlfriend, Deb, and some other family. The whales are all gone now, so we had to settle for dolphins. Plus. we got to check out the big genoa jib I have never seen yet and were pleased to see how it fit and drove the boat so well in lighter wind. But I did discover that the lead blocks are seriously overloaded when using this sail and will have to be sized up if we want to put serious use on it. Just another small thing among the many. Next month the rig comes out for a total inspection and repainting. Just another small thing...

Meanwhile I am looking forward to summer being here, the racing starts locally, and the learning about speed continues.

Aloha, Barry Spanier

MauiSails Boom Front End

A good boom is much more than some carbon tubes. The key elements of the whole system are also the length adjustment locking parts, and the boom head that attaches to the mast.

MauiSails frontend fits 37mm or 40mm diameter carbon tubes. Will fit most booms on the market.

You can buy it in MauiSails online store at www.mauisails.com
