Reading I: Sirach 27: 30 – 28: 7 This sec on of the Israelite Wisdom literature matches the Chris an impera ve. It certainly is our duty to forgive others, and not to hold grudges or to hate one’s neighbor. Reading II: Romans 14: 7-9 The libera ng act of Christ, by way of which He freed us from bondage to sin and death, has enabled us to live for God. That is the basis of life in a Chris an society. The Gospel: Ma hew 18: 21-35 This instruc onal parable, with its three “acts,” teaches us first that God’s pa ence is a gi to us, and also that we have an obliga on to imitate God’s mercy by our forgiving a tude.

Stewardship is not op onal! “None of us lives as his own mas-ter and none of us dies as his own master,” says St. Paul. While we live, we are responsible to the Lord, and when we die, we die as His servants.” See Romans 14:7-9

How precious is your mercy O God! The children of men seek shelter in the shadow of your wings. Psalm 36:8 Commun-ion An phon for the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time Our approach to immigra on reform should be based on Scripture, the Principles of Catholic Social Teaching, and the study of immigra on problems and issues. How do we as Catholics inform our consciences concerning immigra on? “The irony of our present system is that by restric ng immi-gra on ghtly and making it nearly impossible for many peo-ple to immigrate legally, millions have entered without inspec-

on...If there were a reasonable legal procedure that immi-grants could follow, most would not risk their lives to enter illegally through a desert...As long as the pull of employment in the United States matches the push of economic hardships in other countries immigra on will not stop, no ma er how challenging and hazardous we make the process for entry.

“We must also address the undocumented immigrants in our country. An opportunity for the undocumented to regularize their status, so that we know who they are, would free up resources, allowing enforcement officials to target those in-tending to harm us rather than those here working to provide for their families.” Welcoming the Stranger, by Ma hew Soerens and Jenny Hwang Another source for developing informed consciences is : www.jus ceforimmigrants.org.
