Parish Mission Statement

We the people of San Antonio parish strive to be a community of faith, hope, and love. We find our identity and mission in Jesus Christ and His Gospel. We celebrate our life as Catholic Christians in word, worship, and service. By recognizing our baptism, we accept our call to personal renewal and reach out with the gospel message to families and individuals, extending an invitation to fellowship with us.

Today’s Readings

Acts 13:14, 43-52 Psalm 100

Revelation 7:9, 14b-17 John 10:27-30

SHEPHERDS LIKE JESUS Each year this Fourth Sunday of Easter celebrates Jesus the Good Shepherd. To-day’s Gospel seems especially timely, for as Christians worldwide suffer persecu-tion like Paul and Barnabas, Jesus prom-ises his sheep enduring, invincible safety: “They shall never perish. No one can take them out of my hand.” But we who are free to live our faith peacefully some-times take our membership in Jesus’ flock for granted, wandering astray to seek our own pleasure and prosperity. The simple cross that Pope Francis al-

ways wears seems to show us how Jesus responds to that. Francis’s cross features an image of Jesus, who has sought and found a lost sheep, then joyfully set it on his shoulders to carry it gently home. May Good Shepherd Sunday inspire us, so often lost and found ourselves, to as-sist Jesus in seeking, finding, and gently carrying home our fellow precious lambs. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The reception of Holy Communion at Sunday Mass is such an expected feature of the Mass these days that it is surpris-ing to realize that for many centuries, receiving Communion was a relatively rare event in the life of a faithful Chris-tian. “Easter duty” means that Catholics must celebrate reconciliation if aware of serious sin, and receive Holy Commun-ion during the Easter season. For a while, this was a requirement of Easter week, and later extended to the whole season of fifty days, and even beyond that by a few weeks. For the majority of people long ago, this meant Communion was a once-a-year moment. A rather complex bu-reaucracy grew up around this rule in the Middle Ages. Amazingly, people re-

ceived a kind of token at confession ad-mitting them to Communion in their home parish, which then kept careful records and reported them to the bishop. Surviving records can tell us a great deal about our ancestors. In fact, people were encouraged to journey to the church of their baptism in order to fulfill their duty, and therefore the Easter duty includes in its origins a grateful pilgrimage to the font in which you were first embraced by Christ. If your “Holy Mother Church” is within a drive, why not make a pilgrim-age to that font a feature of your Easter celebration of these fifty days? —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Donated food is distributed to fam-ilies in need from the Ministry's Food Pantry on Thursday afternoons. No one is turned down. Our need for food assistance continues to increase every year. Volunteers are welcome, please contact the Family Assistance Ministry (714) 974-9728.

On Sunday, May 19, 2019, volunteers for Concern America will be here at San Antonio de Padua del Cañon Church with a Craft Sale featuring unique and quality handcrafts that provide us with the opportunity to “buy gifts with a pur-pose.” The gifts we find for special events, holidays, or to brighten our own homes are an exchange of caring with impoverished communities in developing countries. This year we have many new handcrafted textiles, ceramics and wood products from Bangladesh, El Salvador Guatemala, Mexico, and Mozambique. These beautifully made, fair trade items were selected to be reminders that when a Concern America product is purchased we are providing a source of income to materially poor families while supporting community development, protecting the environment, and ensuring fair working conditions and fair prices earned for their work. Concern America is an international de-velopment organization based in Santa Ana, CA that builds capacity in health care, clean water, education, and eco-nomic opportunities. You may learn more about their work and view of selec-tion of their crafts on their web site: www.concernamerica.org

Grief is a process that each person expe-riences uniquely in his or her own way. There is no doubt that grief comes with pain, a pain that varies in different de-grees for each person. Emotions vary as well. The most common reactions to the death of a loved one are: shock, denial, anger, guilt, sadness, and finally ac-ceptance. These may be felt in sequence or all at once. Grief Support Group meets on the 1st & 3rd Saturday of each month from 9:30 am - 11:00 am in Conference Room #1. Please contact Elizabeth Bicknell at (714) 974-1416 ext 111. May is here and that means long summer days filled with fun, family, and friends. This school year has gone by so quickly as the children have truly em-braced their faith and grown closer to Jesus. And what better way to end our year than with a ceremony honoring our Blessed Mother! We invite parents, fami-ly members, and ALL parishioners to join our Religious Education classes for our inspirational May Crowning Ceremo-nies. These special gatherings will take place in the Church on Monday and Wednesday, May 20 and 22, during the 3:30 and 5:30 class times, and will be hosted by our treasured Religious Ed students! We also encourage all families to bring a flower to present before our Blessed Mother as part of the ceremony. Students and their families are also invit-ed to join us for our Summer Kick-Off Parties in Glynn Hall immediately fol-lowing the May Crowning Ceremo-nies. A letter went home with our Grade 1-6 Religious Ed students this week with all the details. We look forward to cele-brating with all of you!

On behalf of the Religious Education Staff, Catechists, and children, we want to offer our sincerest love and gratitude to all mothers this blessed Mother’s Day! As you follow in the footsteps of our Blessed Mother, know that you are honored and celebrated for the cherished role that you play in the lives of your children and families. Happy Mother’s Day! May God bless you all!

Inviting all Jr. High and High School Students to come

“F A O F !” Jr. High and High School Students, mark your calendars for this special event taking place on Saturday, June 1, from 2pm-4pm, in our Parish Hall. This afternoon retreat promises to be both entertaining and inspirational as Servite Campus Minister, Bobby Angel, and wife, international speaker, Jackie Francois, inspire an energizing love of our Catholic faith for our teens. Bobby and Jackie take a spirited and fun approach to engaging kids as they discern their spiritual journeys and all the gifts of our Catholic faith. This event promises to be both fun and really interesting. What a great way to kick off the summer months! We hope to see our kids on June 1.

A ROAR ’ G T Summer is just around the corner and you know what that means! It’s time for Vacation Bible School! At San Antonio’s VBS Kick-Off, Camp Directors, Armi Peregrino and Misty Schumacher, introduced this year’s Camp theme…ROAR! Through handmade African drums, a beautiful savannah backdrop, and tasty animal cookies for the chil-dren, families received a fun and festive peek into this year’s theme. The Camp Directors and everyone within the Reli-gious Ed Ministry are so excited to wel-come our parish children and friends from the community to this “ROAR-SOME” week of learning that “LIFE IS WILD, GOD IS GOOD!” Adults and teens who would like to join us for this week of fun and faith with the kids, we’d love to have you! And we’re still in need of some great volunteers to ensure Camp is the perfect “adventure” for everyone.

Please contact Armi Peregrino and Misty Schumacher at: [email protected] for more information. Please keep our camp directors,

volunteers, and campers in your prayers as preparations continue for this inspirational week!

M May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Across the nation the focus will be on behavioral health. The Heart of God and His Church has always been with those who suffer. The Church is a natural ref-uge for those seeking comfort, guidance, and practical help. Our Lady Queen of Angels will be host-ing a forum Anxiety & Depression - Re-alizing Solutions and Building Coping Skills on May 23 at 6:30 p.m. in the Par-ish Hall. Everyone has felt anxiety and depression. You probably know people who are try-ing to deal with varying degrees of one or both. In recent years the suicide rate has unfortunately skyrocketed. Treat yourself and come to our forum and hear health and relationship profes-sionals discuss and teach how anyone can cope and deal better with our lives. You will learn solid techniques and strat-egies to make your life better and for those around you. You will hear stories of hope and inspiration. We have engaged nationally known speakers including Dr. Jeannie Lough-head, professor of psychiatry at UC Riv-erside; Luke Maxwell, depression & sui-cide survivor, James Sanders LMFT and Matt Holzmann, mental health advocate. Everyone is welcome. For more infor-mation e mail [email protected] of call (949) 689-7400.
