the fish and sent the snow away (again). The Victoria Day Weekend has arrived and we’ll do the Queen proud. Summer is on the horizon. So are our guests. To our visiting weekenders, cottagers, campers, boaters, day-trippers, bikers, cyclers, hikers, golfers, walkers, birdwatchers, shoppers, diners and ice-cream-cone-eaters: We’re glad you’re back! From now through Thanksgiving – and beyond – we’ll give you the best we have. And our best is really good. You see, it’s about pride – pride in ourselves, our surroundings, and pride in the fact you keep coming back to spend your well-earned relaxation time with us. When you ask local residents if they take the surrounding beauty and resources for granted, the typical answer is no. That’s especially true of the people who have gone out of their way to make their homes here. While it may be a seasonal visit for you, we’re here all year and we certainly make the most of it. In case you haven’t yet had the pleasure of experiencing it, visualize a gorgeous, clear winter day with the sting of frost, a bright, blue sky…

and lots to see and do. As we reach the end of spring and merge into summer, we can tell you there are tremendous community events coming up. From fireworks to Farmers’ Markets, Diva Nights to car shows, fishing, fairs and festivals, we’ve been planning for your arrival. We do ask that you leave our home a little better than you found it; return that shopping cart, scoop the dog’s – ah – leftovers, put the litter and recycling where it belongs, and even contribute to our local food bank or other important charities. You deserve that sense of belonging, too. To all of our local residents and businesses: We have reason to be proud, and even more reason to be appreciative. This year, we applauded many new businesses and services as they opened their doors in our area villages and towns. We are all in the business of service. We’re the ambassadors of welcome to our neighbours, our colleagues and our guests. Rev. David and Marion ReeveDavid Reeve and his wife Marion are moving to Peterborough to a retirement residence around June 15th. They have lived in Victoria Place for 19 years. David, a retired minister, and Marion have both been actively involved in Trinity Church and in the community. David formed Environmental Action Bobcaygeon in 2006 – initially to investigate the possibility of re-opening the dam here and to examine local environmental issues. David and Marion are very much admired and respected by many friends. They will be greatly missed. Forgotten, Not!The last 12 months have witnessed ratepayer activism as never seen before in the Bobcaygeon area. Residents of the Township of Trent Lakes (so much for the historic Harvey, Galway and Cavendish townships) a mere year ago rose up to the local councilors letting a quarry application, via zoning changes, slide quickly through without critique. When ratepayers sniffed the odour of the action they rallied and over 500 met to speak their mind. From June 2012 onwards the questions and thus the inquisition into good governance escalated. After the township representatives voted in favour (one opposed seeing perhaps their council seat was indeed in jeopardy), residents individually and through the NPLRA’s actions kept asking for more consultation as they found weaknesses in various studies used to approve the rezoning. When the issue made its way in 2013 to the County of Peterborough Council, there was, for once, open and intellectually stimulating debate in the council chambers. Finally one had to be impressed with the inquisition the proposal received. Not to belabor the point but the actions of the NPLRA and the Curve Lake Nation have managed to delay but not stop the process. As a witness to council proceedings and reports by township and county staff, I feel it has been a battle against all those who represent us which is

At a special Council meeting on May 07, there was only one item on the agenda, the flood. City of Kawartha Lakes Council unanimously approved the application to the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program (ODRAP) and has requested that the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing declare portions of the municipality as ‘disaster areas’. In order for the City to qualify for ODRAP, a number of issues must be addressed:• Overall damage must be in excess of $3.5

million to qualify and the City is claiming $3.8 million.


• Even then the Ministry of Natural Resources has a formula for the disposition of funds particularly for private residents who have been adversely affected by the flooding. For example: for every $10,000 committed by the City they would provide $18,000.

MNR Flood Warning remains in effect for the Gull River system. Water bodies throughout the Gull River Watershed remain high as water makes its way through the system. Flooding continues in

local rivers and lakes. Inflows in the upper Gull watershed continue to decline and the Trent-Severn Waterway (TSW) continues to assess the situation and make operational decisions on a daily basis. The waterway system is scheduled to open on May 17th.The Kawartha Conservation Flood Warning for Balsam, Cameron, Sturgeon and Pigeon Lakes is no longer in effect. There are those affected by the flooding that do not have ample monetary resources to see them through this difficult time. Therefore, the City of Kawartha Lakes has set up a trust fund to help facilitate private donations for disaster relief. Donations will be accepted at all Municipal Service Centers and can be made at the Lindsay Royal Bank, to the Disaster Relief Trust Account. Donations can also be made online at www.city.kawarthalakes.on.ca/donate. Charitable Donation receipts will be issued for all donations over $10. This volunteer position will require approximately 15 hours per week and will require evening and weekend meetings throughout the year.

The person we seek will be energetic, highly motivated, and committed to expanding Scouting to every community within the area. You will need excellent management skills and be a good manager of your time.

The successful applicant will also become one of 7 area Commissioners who make up the White Pine Council Management Leadership Team providing support, input and planning towards the growth and expansion of scouting in Eastern Ontario using the Action Plan for Canadian Scouting. The Administrative Centre is located in Ottawa and provides a full complement of staff to support and administer you in your role.

Trillium Highlands Area covers the geography that goes from Beaverton in the West along highway 48 east to Coboconk and north to Minden / Haliburton; south to Bobcaygeon, Omemee and Pontypool; west along Hwy 7B to the eastern edge of the town of Port Perry; along the northern shores of Lake Scugog to Simcoe Street; and cross country back to Beaverton; and includes all of the towns and villages within that area. (Basically the City of Kawartha Lakes, and the towns of Beaverton and Cannington and Minden and Haliburton).

You will be supported by an Area Support Manager (Perry Kirkbride) and an Area Youth Commissioner. Together you make up the senior leadership team for the Trillium Highlands Area which currently has a membership of 10 groups and approximately 390 members, comprised of youth and adult volunteers.

Applicants should submit their resume highlighting management experience. Although Scouting experience is not required it is beneficial in the role.

never had the opportunity or to be honest the desire to attend one I felt this was too good an opportunity to miss. The one item of interest was an application for a zoning amendment change the Urban Residential Type One (R1) Zone to the Urban Residential Type One Exception * (R1-*) Zone to permit the creation of 6 urban residential building lots with reduced minimum lot frontages on Lots 1 and 2, vacant land on the corner of Front and West Sts. The applicant, West Homes Inc., was represented by a Richard Danziger whom you might remember was at one time the Manager, Planning Department for the City and since leaving that post is now a consultant. In today’s world that is not all that unusual. In his presentation to the committee he said that in his opinion the applicant has met all the necessary requirements. Speaking against the proposal was Emma Roberts, a resident on Front St. who said that she had a petition of 82 signatories representing 66 residences and asked that the committee reject the submission. Ms. Roberts was concerned that the building of 6 residences on the two lots would have an adverse effect in the area since it is an area where a school bus stops. Also, there are no sidewalks and traffic levels would rise, especially in the summer where many people launch boats. At the end of the day the committee sent the motion back to staff for review.

ROOTS & RAMBLINGS

Grand plans, excitement and a long to-do-list are normal for veteran gardeners once spring has arrived. We are all out in the garden, doing clean up and enjoying the spring flowers. While we walk around our gardens, we have high hopes for how it will look this year; hoping to experiment with new plant combinations in attempts to meet the challenges that come with each new season.

New gardeners to Bobcaygeon start the season with a lot of questions: What should I plant? Where should I plant it? How do I look after it? Where can I buy locally grown plants? To help, The Bobcaygeon & District Horticultural Society is hosting its annual Plant Sale, Saturday, May 25, from 9 am to noon in the Drive Shed and yard at Kawartha Settlers’ Village. All the plants provided for sale are tried and true to the Bobcaygeon area and our veteran

members are very helpful in answering any of your gardening questions. Parking is available in the lot or on Dunn Street. Here are some simple garden tips that are timeless:1 Use rainy days to dig deep and

get out as many of the weeds and their roots as possible, early in the season ;

The Kinette Trinket, Treasure and Trash sale is on Saturday, July 13. We will be accepting donations of just about everything except clothing until the end of June. I always get a great feeling of accomplishment when, after deciding what I am going to get rid of, I take it where it will do a lot of good (and quickly, before I change my mind). The Coboconk & District Lions Club has started its 12th season that began on April 30. Twelve years ago, the Lions club saw a need for sport in the small village, and they wanted to provide it at a reasonable price for families, and have it all on one night. They easily reached their goal as the league grew quickly over a few short years and is now at its maximum capacity. Children ages 3 to 11 enjoy house league soccer at the Legion field in Coboconk on Tuesday nights. Coboconk and area businesses continue to generously support this activity. The quiet village comes alive on Tuesday nights. One of the great things about teaching children to play soccer is that it is a team sport and involves many of the skills children need to succeed in their future development. To play soccer, kids need to learn how to communicate with one another respectfully and responsively, as they have to work together. They have to learn to share; they have to come together as a group to meet a common goal and help each other. The Coboconk Lions are delighted to offer this wonderful opportunity to their community.

Count down to Splash Pad 2013.

It will have been three years from concept to completion when the Bobcaygeon Splash Pad opens on June 6, says director Heather Harrison.

Students of Bobcaygeon Public School will join other members of the public to celebrate the opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Tommy Anderson Park. The event begins at noon. Heather says she helped launch the project when co-director, teacher Lindsey Wesslink first approached her with the idea. Heather took it on, “In memory of my parents, Monty and Nancy Crowe, and because I grew up playing ball at the park. We hope this project will revitalize the park. It’s a great place to play.” “The splash pad is a safe and fun place to cool off all summer,” she adds. According to Heather, Public School students raised approximately $15,000 of the $135,000 needed by organizing Spaghetti Dinner – assisted by teaching staff – and Dance-a-thon events. “It’s very important that the kids helped because it gives them

Nawal Azar-Hage says, “This year, we changed the menu and based it on all of the dishes our customers loved last year.” The Mediterranean and Canadian menu is extensive and complete with delicious vegetarian options. The “we” is Nawal and husband, Joe. This is their second summer at the waterfront restaurant. “My husband cooks. That’s why I married him,” she laughs. They’ve been married 28 years. They use local sources when possible and take great pride in their offerings. “It’s fresh everything, natural everything, including vegetables, honey and maple syrup. There are no preservatives and everything is made from scratch,” she says. While Joe cooks, she manages the restaurant and gift store. The couple grew up in Lebanon where, Nawal says, “I learned amazing cooking from my mother and grandma. Old country family recipes. In our culture, cooking is the art of love. Joe learned from his mother.” The Lebanese specialties feature Souvlaki, Kafta, Falafel and Zattar – a breakfast pizza combining oil, thyme, pistachio, and sesame seed. Ribs, chicken wings and pizza are just some of the Canadian fare. Open Tuesday through Sunday, May through Thanksgiving Weekend, 7 am to 9 pm. Enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner. Nightly specials run all season, such as Tuesday for Senior Citizens (they get a 20 percent meal discount), Wednesday for Children (the first child dines for free, the second for half price…) Thursday is Rib Night. Friday features pizza specials and Saturday is Party Night with great prices for wings and beverages. A traditional specialty is Mezza. As Nawal explains, Mezza is, “Like a little buffet when people want to celebrate, for example.” It’s an 18 item Lebanese feast of flavours – a dinner that serves four. Nawal says it is often accompanied by Arak, liquor similar to Ouzo. When you travel to Chez Catalina and wish to enjoy a cold drink, your designated driver is treated to complimentary non-alcoholic beverages. There’s even a 70-year-old resident turtle near the dock, and plenty of fish to feed. “You must order the fish food,” Nawal smiles, “although the fish food is free.” Reservations are recommended for this casual, family restaurant. Take-out is available, too, and there’s ample free docking and parking.

I want to take a moment to remind everyone to think of those people that were impacted by the recent flooding along the Black, Burnt and Gull River watersheds. Many people are still cleaning up and some people lost everything. If you have the ability to assist these fellow residents, please consider making a donation at one of the Municipal Service Centres, at the Royal Bank in Lindsay or online at www.city.kawarthalakes.on.ca/donate. A tax receipt will be issued for every donation over $10.00. As the recent flooding reminds us that we have an abundance of water, many communities throughout the world are challenged with the quality and quantity of water that is available to them. That is the reason we have chosen to focus on water as one of our priorities with our partners Fleming College, Trent University, the Ontario Clean Water Agency, Kawartha Conservation, etc. along with many private sector partners. To support these priorities, millions of dollars have been received in grants from the Federal and Provincial Government and private sector business partners. Pursuing the economic benefits of this international priority is the reason that your Council for the City of Kawartha Lakes supported the hiring of Tonya Kraan, Manager of Innovation in October of 2012. Tonya has extensive experience in International business and product development and has negotiated multi-million dollar contracts in 20+ countries. Tonya specializes in assisting small and medium sized enterprises find market opportunities for their innovations through market research, distribution/licensing agreements, patents, promotional activities, piloting and certification. With the skills that Tonya brings to Kawartha Lakes, her first initiative was to create the Water Research & Innovation Network. WRAIN has been designed as a ‘one stop’ solution for the water industry to accelerate market adoption of new technologies through collaboration and

demonstration sites throughout Kawartha Lakes. The network consists of researchers, municipal services and economic development professionals. You may already know of some of the exciting projects taking place in Kawartha Lakes in conjunction with our partners. Over the next number of months, Tonya will be featured right here in The Promoter where she will provide regular updates on projects and the success of our knowledge economy and innovation initiatives. In an effort to bring our waterfront associations together in one spot to discuss our water agenda, I will be hosting a meeting for waterfront property associations to discuss the possibilities of forming a large waterfront organization to provide input to government on waterfront issues and to also assist with propelling our water quality strategy in Kawartha Lakes. The meeting will be held on Sunday, July 7, 2013 beginning at 9AM at the new Fenelon Falls Community Centre. Watch The Promoter for more details. Exciting times are ahead for Kawartha Lakes and this new thinking in an ever changing and new world is exactly what we must embrace if we are to realize our true potential. So, it may sound a little hippie / tree-hugger, but baking your own granola is super easy, cheap, and requires little work. The best thing about it is that any granola you can think of is just a variation of the same simple formula. Just change the ingredients of the mixture to suit your tastes. Hate raisins? Leave them out! Love coconut? Add some more! Below you will find a simple recipe and some ideas to help you get started. Oh yeah, by the way, your house will smell amazing after making this.

What you’ll need:3 cups grains (rolled oats, barley, rye, quinoa, etc.)1 1/2 cups raw nuts 3/4 cup sweetener (honey, maple syrup, or agave)1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 3/4 tsp salt1 1/2 cup seeds (pumpkin, flax, sesame, sunflower, etc)1 cup unsweetened flaked coconut 1 tsp spices of your choice (cinnamon, ginger, clove...)1 cup dried fruit

What to do:1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees. 2. Combine grain, nuts, seeds, salt, and spices in a

large bowl.

3. Add your sweetener and oil and stir until totally combined.

4. Spread mixture onto parchment lined baking sheets and bake for 30 minutes. Remove from oven, break up and stir mixture again, then return for an additional 15 minutes or until golden and fragrant. (Note – it won’t be crispy right away, but will firm up and set as it cools.)

5. Remove from oven; cool in pan. Mix in dried fruit. Store in airtight containers.

If there’s anyone who deserves to be singled out, it’s those unselfish people who volunteer their time and efforts, without which the Chamber and its multiple events could not function. There are those individuals – 16 this year – who make up the Board of Directors and head up our numerous committees. Then there are the sponsors – corporate and local businesses and, on occasion, private citizens – who dig into their enterprise resources and/or their own pockets to help make what we offer more interesting and fulfilling. Recently, these helpmates are found within and outside our area. As an example, the Canada–U.S. Walleye Tournament’s 2013 edition has more than $50,000 in prizes, enviable industry participation and a “boatload” – pardon the jest – of volunteers. It’s the same story in different ways throughout the April to December event season. Participants in trade shows often take Explore Bobcaygeon & Area booklets with them, helping the Chamber encourage businesses and people to establish here and travellers to make Bobcaygeon and area their destination and, perhaps, their homes. Last but not least are those whose memberships provide the basic means for the Chamber’s existence. Granted it’s a two-way street – the Chamber enthusiastically represents our community to the world – but theirs is a contribution second to none. A “SOFT” Approach to Foot Pain

For anyone suffering from foot, heal, or ankle pain, there’s nothing “soft” about it. In fact, the “hard” truth is that the pain can be so severe as to become debilitating. However, the acronym “SOFT” (Structure, Over-use, Footwear, Trauma) is a helpful way for patients to understand foot-related pain and some of the

things we look at as chiropodists when first diagnosing and treating it.1. Structure – Just as no two

snowflakes are alike, the same holds true for feet. The reality is that few of us are born with an “ideal” foot, but there is a range of normal in which your feet function most effectively. Structural issues like flat feet, high arches, or other concerns can be increasingly problematic the further they are from this normal range. The result can be pain in the feet,

heels, and ankles, and may even affect joints and soft tissue right up to the back, since all of these are connected in what’s known as the gait cycle.

2. Over-use – Yes, spring is sprung, the grass is ris’, you wonder why that heel pain is? The sudden onset of activity after a winter of more sedentary activity, heavy physical training, or intensive work-related activity may cause tissues to become inflamed and tender. Over-use injuries are a sign that your body is trying to repair itself and that you need to give it a break. However, ignoring them can result in the pain becoming a more stubborn chronic (long-term) problem, and may even cause structural foot issues such as heel or bone spurs to happen over time.

3. Footwear – Okay, so most of us understand (but

may choose to ignore it!) that footwear like high heels or flip-flops are less than ideal. However, fewer of us recognize how important it is to match the kind of footwear you choose to your foot type. Not every shoe is suitable to every foot, and your chiropodist can provide unbiased, expert advice on the kind of footwear best suited to your foot either as part of your treatment for pain or to prevent it.

4. Trauma – Traumatic injuries like those experienced in car accidents and other less severe mishaps can have long-term impacts that result in chronic pain. The foot can be structurally disfigured or tissues can be damaged in ways that cause functional impairment – preventing your foot from working as it should. Your chiropodist’s treatment strategy will help to normalize foot function while addressing the pain.

I was lying out on the back deck with my boys recently, our necks craned to look at the sky as we waited for the meteor shower to begin. A chorus of “When is it going to happen?”, “What does it look like?”, “Don’t eat all the popcorn!” and “I am thirsty!” waffled out any hope of hearing the finer chorus of nature as we witnessed the glory of our universe. I realized what a crime it is that my own children clearly don’t understand the art of patience. Everything is expected to happen instantly. Gra t i f ica t ion is expected right now and not as a gift that comes as a result of patience. Waiting to find out the gender of your baby has been thrown the wayside with the technology of ultrasound. Cooking a meal is done in an instant so we don’t have to

wait. We don’t save for the big purchases anymore; we just slap it on a credit card because we want it now. We have lost the feeling that comes from working hard for something, achieving that goal and then buying it. Even as I was lying there, I remembered how, as kids, we used to lay on the slabs of wood behind our old house, looking at our worn constellation map, which had come in our World magazine. Even that has been replaced by the new technology of a Constellation app on the iPad, which is instantly

downloaded. Patience is becoming a lost art. It’s something we must work at over time. If it’s spring then it must be asparagus season! Ontario asparagus is plentiful in May and June so make the most of this time by choosing the freshest asparagus you can find. Use the tips and recipes below for some

quick, nutritious and delicious dishes.

Nutrition SpotlightAsparagus is an excellent source of folate, which helps to build new red blood cells and lowers the risk of having a baby with birth defects. It may also help reduce the risk of heart disease. Asparagus is also a source of vitamin A and vitamin C.

Shopping and StoringChoose asparagus spears that are

straight, crisp and have tight green or purple tips. Whether you choose thick or thin spears is a matter of personal taste – both will be delicious! To store asparagus, wrap the ends in a damp paper towel and then cover with plastic wrap. You can also stand the ends up straight in a container of water. Asparagus can be stored for 4–5 days in the refrigerator, but to make the most of their fresh spring flavour, eat them as soon as possible.

PreparingAsparagus is quick and easy to prepare in a variety of ways. Perfect for busy nights when you want a no-fuss dish! Wash the asparagus in cold water to remove sand or dirt. Hold the asparagus by its end and snap off the woody part of the spear. Thick spears may sometimes require some peeling to remove the tough outer layer. The less you cook your asparagus, the more flavourful and crisp it will be. Thin spears can cook up in less than three minutes. Thicker spears may take slightly longer but you can speed up their cooking by cutting an “x” with your knife in the bottom of each stalk.

Ideas to Cook Asparagus• Keep asparagus crisp and green

by steaming in a tightly covered pot for 4–8 minutes. Serve with light mayo or a sprinkle of lemon.

• Drizzle asparagus with olive oil and lemon, and then roast in the oven. Grate a little Parmesan cheese over the hot asparagus and serve. (Mmm with fresh garlic!)

• Take advantage of the warmer weather and grill asparagus on the barbeque.

• Teach the kids to prepare their own asparagus for an afternoon snack. Cover asparagus with 2 tbsp of water and place in microwave on high for 4–6 minutes. Serve with some light ranch sauce for dipping. (And don’t forget to remind them about microwave safety.)

• Add asparagus to soups, salads, pastas, stir-fries, eggs and other favourite dishes.

COMPANION GARDeNINGNow that spring planting season is in full swing, it’s worth considering the practice of planting companion style gardening. Since most Herbicides and Pesticides have been banned, your goal is to create a great garden without these chemicals which is where companion gardening comes into play. Just like people, plants form relationships with each other. Where some varieties get along together, others may not. That’s the premise of companion in its simplest form. When certain supportive plants are in close proximity to each other, they can assist in repelling or even destroying harmful insects; discourage the intrusion of other detrimental plants and dominating weeds. There are countless combinations of companions in the garden. Here are just a few: Carrots love tomatoes – makes your carrots sweeter. Green beans will protect eggplants from Colorado Potato Beetles. Place radishes in your lettuce rows – Make lettuce juicy and tender.
