foreworD

If the stories and memories of the antique

trade in Melbourne are anything to go by

the 1960s and the subsequent two decades

in Australia were a treasure-trove of estates,

dispersals and collections that bore very

special pieces and very regularly. I recall

my late father always reminding me that

“someone from Geelong” had purchased

from him in the 1970s at the Malvern Town

Hall Antique Dealers Fair a musical box that

had a perfect lineage that was traceable to

no less than Napoleon’s Josephine! That was

just one of the many stories he told me about

just how many special things emerged from

often the collections of post-World War II

European migrants with the capacity to carry

very little luggage but the spare little spot

to bring the odd small treasure that would

someday be converted to dollars for a better

life. My impression is that this happened

very many times for several decades and

what blossomed was an economy for exotic

objects and property from the socialising and

interaction that grew between the existing

Australian population and enthusiastic

migrants from all over the world that

brought to Australia a culture and history of

collecting. Unpacking tea chests from estates

at Leonard Joel in the late 1980s probably

marked the last period when lots of special

and rare and unique “things” emerged

from the boxes to be marketed and sold in

a forthcoming auction – unpacking those

tea chests was genuine adult fun for those

that loved learning and admiring beautiful

things with history, provenance and superb

craftsmanship.

Interesting things and very interesting things

still present themselves at Leonard Joel

every week from around the country and

sometimes from around the world but I’d be

“gilding the lily” to suggest that something

very special and important came through

our doors every week but it seems to happen

every month. Just this month a client brought

in a box full of items for sale in our objects

and collectables department. The collection

was the usual presentation of “smalls” as

we sometimes call them that would have

raised several hundred dollars or maybe a

thousand dollars. Amongst the items was a

diary belonging to a relative of the client and

some medals. Many diaries and many medals

are not considered historically significant

and by extension not very valuable but

occasionally the content, the period and the

author-soldier coalesce to create something

truly special for the auctioneer and this

was just one of those examples. Add to that

the owner’s lack of expectation and you

have one of those very commercial but also

very human moments when the auctioneer

delights in advising the unsuspecting owner

that they have in their possession for sale

something very special and something very

valuable. In the box lay a diary belonging to

the client’s relative who fought in Gallipoli

and the diary extended for a full year! That

would have been ample to excite our Head

of Important Collectables, Giles Moon, but

that was not all. What also emerged were the

relative’s accompanying medals.

These two items, full of history and

personality and family stories, will be

auctioned at Leonard Joel on Sunday the 19th

May 2013 when they will be recognised for

their very special place in Australian history.

Leonard Joel is honoured to be offering these

items and we hope you get the opportunity

to view them first hand in our South Yarra

rooms before the auction.

buckle showing Britannia fighting the Hydra above lettering in relief ‘PATRIOTIC FUND 1803’, in fitted mahogany case lined with blue velvet and ‘PATRIOTIC FUND, LLOYD’S,1803’ paper label to interior of lid 91cm long

Provenance: It is believed that the sword was purchased by a member of the Menzies family at auction in England in the 1950s. The sword was presented to Sir Robert Menzies shortly after and has remained in the Menzies family to the present day.

Other Notes: A portrait by Daniel Cunliffe (1801-1871) painted in 1843 shows Menzies wearing the Lloyd’s Patriotic Fund Sword (see front cover). This painting is in the Collection of the Royal Marines Museum, Southsea, Hampshire.

Sir Charles A.F.N. Menzies (1783-1866), Royal Marines officer and founder of Newcastle, New South Wales was born at Bal Freike, Perthshire, Scotland, the son of Captain Charles Menzies of the 71st Regiment, and Sarah, née Walker. He was educated at Stirling and, at age 15 commissioned as a second Lieutenant in the Royal Marines, serving on HMS Holden with Lord Nelson’s squadron off Boulogne during the blockade of the French Invasion Fleet.

In 1803 Menzies sailed on HMS Calcutta to

transport convicts to NSW and shortly after was promoted to lieutenant. In 1804 he was in command of a detachment of marines that crushed an uprising near Castle Hill by a group of Irish convicts, who were political prisoners from the 1798 Battle of Vinegar Hill, County Wexford. Following this incident, in March 1804 Governor Philip Gidley decided to separate the worst offenders to establish a new settlement on Coal River for the purpose of coal production. He accepted Lieutenant Menzies’ offer to take command of the new settlement. The group sailed from Sydney on the Lady Nelson, Francis and Resource and arrived on 30 March. Initially Menzies named the new settlement Kingstown, but it was re-named Newcastle by Governor King. Although still only in his early 20s Menzies acquitted himself well and by the time he resigned his position in March 1805 to return to England the settlement was well established.

Menzies resumed active service soon after returning to England. He commanded Royal Marines attached to HMS Minerva and was involved in numerous actions. On 22nd June 1806 Menzies was in one of the Minerva’s boats that were responsible for cutting out five boats from under Fort Finisterre. He led a landing party which rushed the fort with pikes and bayonets. Menzies was the first to enter, lowered the enemy’s colours and raised the British flag. The British suffered no casualties. On

11th July he planned an attack on a barge that captured the Spanish Privateer Buena Dicha and was instrumental in cutting out the Spanish vessel of war St. Joseph, landing at the Bay of Arosa and taking prisoner the Spanish commodore. Menzies also led the Marines at the capture of Fort Guardia. During this period he was severely wounded and his right arm was amputated.

In 1813 Menzies was promoted to Captain of the Royal Marine Artillery. He married Maria Wilhelmina in 1817, the only child of Dr Robert Bryant, physician to the Duke of Gloucester and they had five children. He was Colonel 2nd Commandant of the Royal Marines, Chatham from 1844-48 and Colonel Commandant of the Portsmouth Royal Marines from 1848-54. Menzies was appointed General in 1857. Menzies became K.H. in 1831 and K.C.B in 1856. He was appointed aide-de-camp to Queen Victoria in 1851. He was the first Colonel of the RMA Division until he died in Hastings in 1866, aged 83.

322ThE 1862 GEELoNG DISTRICT WINE GRoWERS STERLING SILVER CUP AND AUSTRALIAN SILVER CoLLARThE CoLLAR ATTRIBUTED To LoUIS kITZ, (1820-1887), GEELoNG; ThE CUP oF MAkER’S MARk DANIEL AND ChARLES hoULE, LoNDoN CIRCA 1859The two handled cup with an ogee body, bearing the inscription ‘Presented to / Louis Kitz Esqr / by the / wine growers of the Geelong District / in token of their esteem / for his laudable exertions in promoting the / colonial wine trade / Geelong Jany. 24th 1862,’ richly embossed with a pastoral scene, the two sectional collar comprising chased and

stippled overlapping vine leaves and graves, centred by a cartouche bearing an identical inscription to the body, the cup 780grs. total weight of silver, 28cm high; the collar 290grs. total weight, each section measuring 11cm wide x 13cm high (irregular). History: Johann Louis Kitz (1820-1887) was one of a generation of German craftsman who immigrated to Australia at the time of the first gold rush in the second half of the 19th century. Born in Hanau, Kitz trained as a watchmaker and later worked as a watchmaker Regent Street, London, where he was appointed watchmaker to an English railway company. However, little is known of Kitz’s work after his arrival

in Australia. Contemporary Geelong newspaper advertisements between 1853-1868 indicate that he was active as a manufacturing jeweller during this period. An 1864 advertisement in the Geelong Advertiser announcing the closure of his jewellery business, marks the time from which point Kitz transferred his business interests almost solely into the wine trade, purchasing the Ceres vineyard and focusing on the sale and promotion of Geelong wines. The silver collar on the cup presented here work is thought to be only the second known example of Kitz’s work, the other being the Sir William à Beckett. While unmarked, both the English silver cup and collar bear a detailed inscription to Kitz

in his later capacity as a wine merchant. According to professor Richard A.J O’Hair, it is recorded in two newspaper articles that at a dinner meeting of the Vignerons of Geelong, Kitz was presented with a silver cup of his own manufacture in recognition of his service to the colonial wine industry. While the cup itself is of English manufacture, the fitted collar is attributed to Kitz.

ASIA WEEk NY IN FoCUSThe annual jamboree, Asia Week New York,

is widely understood as THE key event

for museum curators, scholars, collectors

and dealers alike. The 2013 event was

lauded as a great success with $175 Million

in combined sales and an abundance of

museum representatives and patrons doing

the rounds of 43 gallery shows and the

major auction salerooms. The buoyancy of

the Asian art market is often judged by the

number of international visitors and 2013

was regarded as one of the strongest in years.

Melbourne based Japanese art dealer, Lesley

Kehoe has been exhibiting at Asia Week NY

since the late nineties said, “interestingly,

the European curators and collectors were

back…, it was one of the best years - not just

in terms of sales”.

The auction rooms during Asia Week NY

saw the hammer fall on some great Japanese

Meiji period works in cloisonné, metalwork

and Satsuma including a jar by Yabu Meizan

which was knocked down for USD $88,000.

Pieces by Meizan have had some great

success at Leonard Joel in the past – keep

an eye out for the work, its fine quality

painting and overall workmanship. In fact,

an excellent selection of Satsuma is coming

up at the next DEC ARTS SALE (PLEASE

INSERT TITE AND DATE) featuring some

high quality works. (insert picture of the

main Satsuma piece in the sale) Interestingly,

Asian art at auction now ranks as the third-

highest selling category after Impressionism

and modern along with contemporary art in

the USA. With the rise of Asia, this should

only develop further. For the collector, a

plethora of fascinating collecting pursuits

await your interest. For those thinking of

selling, you may even have a gem destined for

greatness.

and Asian works of art please contact
