born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead,

and buried. He descended into Hades; the third day He rose again from the

dead; He ascended into Heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Fa-

Lectionary Readings

Fifth Sunday of Easter – Color: White. Acts 7:55-60. Stephen sees and proclaims Jesus at God's right hand. The crowd sees stones. Stephen's boldness and forgiveness are remembered. All but one name from the crowd is forgotten. Psalm 31:1-5, 15-16. A psalm of David. 1 Peter 2:2-10. Christ is the cornerstone, and we are living stones, a royal priesthood, God's own people, called to proclaim God's mighty acts in Christ, including our own deliverance from darkness to light. John 14:1-14. Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life. If we see him, we have seen God. If we follow in his way, we participate in the works of God.

Service & Sermon Notes

Welcome to Worship

elcome to New Hope Church, now into our third century serving God! If you are visiting, you will discover a loving, spirit-filled church family. Here is some helpful information as you join us in worship today:

- All who worship here are equals in the sight of God, regardless of race, age, gen-der, physical disability or religious affiliation.

- Communion, when celebrated, is open to all who profess Christ as Lord and Sav-ior, whether affiliated with this church or not. Children may partake of Commun-ion as well, if parents approve.

- A nursery is available during the service; please see a greeter for directions. (This is for infants and children up to 3 years of age.)

- Handicap-accessible restrooms are located off the narthex (main foyer) and adja-cent to the entrance lobby in the Fellowship Hall/Gym.

- Please complete the tear-off attendance slip attached to the bulletin and drop it in the offering plate so we will have a record of your visit with us today.

- Thank you for remembering to silence your cell phone during the service. - We ask that there be no food or beverages in the sanctuary, please.

- If you arrived as a visitor we hope that you leave as a friend and worship with us often!

New Hope Church exists to:

Glorify God in worship and rejoice in our life together;

Share the Good News of the Gospel in word and deed;

Reach as many as we can with the saving love of Jesus;

Help each person grow toward Christian maturity,

and find their place of service in the church and in the world.

Ministries/Activities Within Our Church

 Next Sunday, May 25 - Sunday Before Memorial Day. During the service we will honor all those who have served our country in the military.

 The next C.P.W. meeting will be Saturday May 31 in the office building. We will plan the trip to the Thistle Farm in Nashville. Please let Mary Thompson know if you would like to go.

 The New Hope Men’s Ministry will have its next monthly meeting on Satur-day morning, June 7 at 8:30 a.m. “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” - Proverbs 27:17.

 Sunday, June 8 is Pentecost Sunday. Everyone remember to where something red in honor of the coming of the fire of the Holy Spirit!

 Stephen Ministry - Got a burden? You don’t have to carry that burden alone. You can have a Stephen Minister who will spend time with you, listen to you, and walk beside you. If you or someone you know is interested in receiving care through the Stephen Ministry program at New Hope, please contact the pastor

Page 4: May 18, 2014 Worship Bulletin

through the Church office at (615) 449-7020 and request that a Stephen minister contact you.

 CHURCH CAMPS - Our New Hope Children will be attending two camps this year at Crystal Springs Camp in Kelso, TN. Our first camp is Junior High

Camp for kids going into 7th, 8th and 9th grades. We will be leaving out for this camp just after church on Sunday, June 8th and the kids will return home on Friday, June 13th in the afternoon. The second camp is Junior Camp for kids in Upper Elementary going into the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. We will also be leaving out for this camp just after church on Sunday June 22nd and the kids will return on Friday, June 27th in the afternoon. The cost of each camp is $85 for kids who attend New Hope Church and $170 if they have friends who want to go but do not attend the church. If any child needs help in affording camp please see the Youth Pastor Brad Unland or the Assistant to the Pastor Robbie Haynes for more information. Every child needs to fill out health and camp registration forms and those can be picked up in the church of-fice. The kids interested in camp will receive these forms this Sunday, May 4th during Children's Church. Camp has opportunities for kids to worship together and grow in Christ. They will also spend time swimming, fishing, making crafts, and eating (they eat a lot at camp!). We hope our kids are getting excited about this summer and all the great experiences they can explore. Contact Brad for de-tails: e-mail: [email protected]; home phone 772-4680.

Worship Scripture References

The lesson for this Sunday May 18, 1 Peter 2:1-10, can be considered a follow-up of last Sunday’s John 10:1-10, where Jesus says “I am the gate for the sheep…” There is no way to get into the kingdom of God except through Jesus. The I Peter 2:2-10 lesson deals with the kind of community that develops by way of the entrance into the kingdom (Gate) and are saved by the blood of Christ. Five things happen: 1) You rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy and slander. 2) We begin like babes in Christ 3) You “grow up” in your salvation, step by step 4) In the “Pen” (Church) You are not just individuals but a group of those chosen

and precious to him. 5) You are plural - a chosen people, a royal priesthood, God’s special possession,

that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

Together we are the church, built on Christ the cornerstone. Great teaching in this one. May God speak to you through his Holy Word.

1 Peter 2:1-10 New International Version (NIV) 2 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 2 Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, 3 now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. The Living Stone and a Chosen People 4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house[a] to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For in Scripture it says: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”[b] 7 Now to you who believe, this stone is precious. But to those who do not believe, “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,”[c] 8 and, “A stone that causes people to stumble and a rock that makes them fall.”[d] They stumble because they disobey the message—which is also what they were des-tined for. 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special pos-session, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Footnotes:

a. 1 Peter 2:5 Or into a temple of the Spirit b. 1 Peter 2:6 Isaiah 28:16 c. 1 Peter 2:7 Psalm 118:22 d. 1 Peter 2:8 Isaiah 8:14

Thought for the Week

ne spring our family was driving from Fort Lauderdale to Tampa, Florida. As far as the eye could see, orange trees were loaded with fruit. When we stopped for breakfast, I ordered orange juice with my eggs. "I'm sorry," the waitress

said. "I can't bring you orange juice. Our machine is broken." At first I was dumb-founded. We were surrounded by millions of oranges, and I knew they had oranges in the kitchen--orange slices garnished our plates. What was the problem? No juice? Hardly. We were surrounded by thousands of gallons of juice. The problem was they had become dependent on a machine to get it. Christians are sometimes like that. They may be surrounded by Bibles in their homes, but if something should happen to the Sunday morning preaching service, they would have no nourishment for their souls. The problem is not a lack of spiritual food--but that many Christians haven't grown enough to know how to get it for themselves. (Leroy Eims, The Lost Art of Disciple

Making.)
