FROM THE HELM

"Spring is nature's way of saying, 'Let's party!'"

— Robin Williams

The Cal 20’s are back from the winter inner harbor storage and the new ferry has made it‘s debut to great reviews. Not a bad a start for the ‘08 season. Opening day had beautiful weather and the event was launched by a fleet of “used” commodores and the Harbor Patrol. There was even a live mermaid in attendance to the delight of all the children, including some of the older AARP kids. Sailing with members has restarted on Sundays. It is great to see our colored sails scooting around harbor. Get checked out on a boat. Please contact Neal Wehtjie for details. May 3 and 4th are the dates for our local spring regatta, the Commodore’s Cup. Cal 20’s and C15’s will be sailing and should you have a desire to watch from the spacious committee boat or play in the water contact myself or Charlie Quest while there are still openings for either day.

See you at the club. —Kelly

On Board This question comes up about every six months. Who can come to the board meetings? The answer is; the meeting is open to any member. The board asks that if you wish to make a presentation try to discuss it with a board member first. Also, it is good idea to distribute information by e-mail before the meeting. If you contact Peggy Ruse or me we will add you to the evening’s agenda and give you a time slot. The meeting runs from 6:00pm to ~9pm on the 2nd Tuesday of the month.

The April Board meeting was mainly a status update. The board checks to make sure that spring and summer activities like club reservations, sail-ins, regattas, birthdays, and such are not congesting the calendar. So far the calendar looks ok. There is a concern that available volunteers for watch and hospitality is down. The port captain has new recruits to train after the BVI trip. That should start to improve the situation. However we are close to having some weekend days without coverage. Please see Suzy Pinkerton for more information on helping with Watch or Hospitality.

Building Update We are close. The building department has let us know that we can pick up our permit contingent on obtaining the sewer permit. Coincidently, we just received the estimate from the Granada Sewer District for obtaining a permit and it was very high. We are in the process of exploring the basis of the estimate with the GSD engineer and possibly revising our sewer request if necessary.

Have you ever wondered where the Club’s dish towels, bar towels, table cloths and aprons go when they have been used and soiled? They go home with Mimi Wisnom, who launders, dries and folds all these necessary items and returns them clean and ready to be used again. Not to mention the lovely do-over of the Women’s Room color and décor. Thanks a load, Mimi!

VENUS ENVY OFFICIALLY NAMED

AND BACK IN THE WATER! By Peggy Ruse

After several months in the club’s boatyard for maintenance, Venus Envy is back in the water—her green sails flying and her newly clean, painted bottom helping her to continue in her role of a lovely, swift goddess of the sea (at least our local harbor and sea)! Venus Envy is part of the club’s Cal 20 program and is dedicated to the Womensail group. Venus’s sponsors are Terri Lahey, Jenna Kinghorn, Peggy Ruse and Karen Hampton. She was relaunched the day before our opening day in April on a cold, windy morning with great help from John Powell and Andy Geiser along with some of the women from Womensail. With some drama (Peggy Ruse fell in the icy waters and brought back safely to land under Jenna Kinghorn’s direction and care), she was masterfully sailed back (red warning flags flying for the harbor) to the club under the command of Terri Lahey and Karen Hampton. She was ready for opening day and sailed proudly around the harbor after the official naming ceremony and congratulations to Suzy Pinkerton and Bob Cantillo as winners of the naming contest! Thank you to so many people for putting time and effort into repairs and, particularly, to Jenna Kinghorn, John Powell and others from Womensail. Special thanks to Sue Prichard for hand-painting Venus’s name on her stern and Clarke Simm for the financial backing for the bow work.

HMBYC’s OPENING DAY ON THE BAY

Despite the initially scary rainfall on the morning of Sunday, April 6, the skies did clear by noon in time for a parade of boats, a wonderful all-you-can-eat taco bar luncheon, and tunes and hula hoop dancing on the beach to the Mermen. It was a great day!

A Gaggle of Used Commodores surround the Mystery

Mermaid of the Day (aka Patti Schwartz of Special Event

Catering and a really good sport!)

Opening day 2008 honored the crew of the Pillar Point

Harbormaster, who were thrilled to show off their new boat.

HMBYC CRUISES THE BVI’s You just have to love a country about the size of the Bay Area that sports heavenly weather, warm waters, fair breezes, one (soon to be two) traffic light, and way too many beach bars that make splendid Painkillers and Bushwhackers for thirsty sailors. HMBYC fielded a fleet of six boats (28 people) for the second HMBYC Cruise-out to the British Virgin Islands April 12-27, 2008. And there is talk of returning for the Christmas-New Year’s holidays 2009-2010.

Well, almost everybody – Dick Schubert, Cynthia Ramseyer and

Ingrid Desilvestre were in a dinghy to take the picture.

HMBYC Winterfest

Reaches New Heights The second annual HMBYC Winterfest was a smash success enjoyed by over 30 Yacht Club members and their friends. Over the course of four mostly sunny days with mild temperatures, participants enjoyed a variety of winter sports and social get-togethers in and around South Lake Tahoe. We had downhill skiers at Heavenly, Kirkwood and Sierra-at-Tahoe over the long weekend. We also had a contingent enjoy snowshoeing and cross-country skiing along the lake shore. On Friday evening, Yacht Club members could be spotted drinking and dining at both the Christiana Inn near Heavenly and lakeside at the Edgewood Tahoe Restaurant just over the Nevada border. Saturday evening brought everyone together at the Ambrosi/Morrell ski chalet in the Tahoe Tyrol neighborhood for a big après-après-ski party. While some people returned home on Sunday, the fun continued on Monday with up to seven of us skiing together on the lightly-populated slopes of Heavenly—you gotta love skiing Tahoe on the weekdays! Judging by the abundance of smiles over the weekend, we would venture to say that next year's Winterfest will be even bigger and better!

EASTER BRUNCH WELL ATTENDED

Easter Sunday on March 23 turned out to be a glorious spring day and the Club was hopping with hungry members who came to enjoy a wonderful collaboratively prepared brunch menu that included Champagne Drinks (Maureen Grimm and Ofer Amir) , Phyllis Smith’s Goat Cheese and Artichoke Strata and Spinach Salad with Strawberries, Barb Walt’s Turkey and Pork Sausages, Kay Burns’s Home Made Bread and Melon. Since the turn out was larger than anticipated (that's why those advance reservations are so critical!) it was fortunate that there was some of John Connors's Eggplant Parmesean to serve - a total of 59 brunches were served. Able kitchen assistance was graciously provided by Mimi Wisnom.
