Summer Camp Update Reported By: Devon Bean Head Camp Councilor

Summer Camp is fast approaching and it is not too early to start getting ready. Many times I have heard that summer camp is expensive and families can not afford to send their kids. While this may be true, our summer camp is comparable to other week long camps. However with that being said, many clubs are working to enable their members to attend camp. Glen Avon is having a pancake breakfast to fundraise to send their members. Alvord Aggies 4-H is going to organize some car washes to help its members pay for camp. There are many ways a club can fundraise. If you would like to attend camp and can’t afford it, approach your club with idea for fundraising and a willingness to work for it. The councilors are working hard to make sure this year’s camp is going to a memorable experience and worth the work you will put in to get there.

Orange County Youth Expo 2010

Hi my name is Lyndsay Hiatt, I am a member of the Ramona Rancheros 4-H club in Hemet, CA. This year the 4-H Orange County group opened up the Youth Expo to the out of county clubs. This was the first year they had ever done so. My sister and I attended this event and it was really a lot of fun. There were a lot of booths to check out and lots of things to participate in. They had Science projects, face painting, Pygmy goats, cows, and a pig having babies, and a sheep that had a baby Lamb. There was also a Poultry show going on and let me tell you I had no idea that there were so many different types of chickens. They had a scavenger hunt for all of us to complete, and a Pancake Breakfast every morning. I entered 4 rabbits and 12 cavies. I also did the Cavy Knowledge test and the Cavy Breed ID test as well. My cavies did very well. I have a Golden Agouti American that took Best In Show and my TSW Teddy took Reserve In Show. I got two very nice ribbons and got to have my picture taken with the judge Valerie Jump (see photo to the left). I had a great time and met some new friends and got to visit with some old ones… all in all I had a great time.

4-H Entry Deadline!

County Officer Nominations and Elections Submitted By: Mary Etta Bollman

Are you looking for a way to be more involved in Riverside County 4-H? I know you are! Why not consider becoming a County Council Officer? Elections will be held in June, nominations will take place in May and June at the County Council meetings. These offices are two-year commitments. Tony was absent at the April County Council meeting. He will be able to speak much more effectively than I, about the open offices and the duties there of. Here is what I have gleaned on my own. This year the offices of President and Treasurer will be up for election. Normally, next year we would elect the Secretary and Vice-President; HOWEVER, Carlisle Tiss, our Vice-President, will not be able to complete the second year of her term because she is heading off to college in Florida. (Yay, Carlisle!). There are several ways we can go about filling that position, but it will need to be filled eventually, since Carlise’s mom won’t spring for the air-fare to shuttle her back and forth for the meetings. There are also positions for Historian/Recorder, which, in my humble opinion, could just as easily be the positions of Historian and Recorder. Our County Bylaws do not have specific job descriptions for the officers, so I have included the link for the Bylaws Template below, which will give you a rough idea of the duties. According to the Riverside County Bylaws, we should have a “Fair Relations Committee” and a “Youth Representative” elected also. The Bylaws are supposed to be re-vamped at some point and we can add to the permitted offices at that time if we wish – I think.

If you would like to review the descriptions of the jobs of the officers go to http://www.ca4h.org/policy/chapter8/index.asp then go down to the bottom. Under “Supporting Documents

and Forms” you will see “Bylaws” click on “4-H County Council Bylaws.” The entire document is very interesting but Article II has the officer descriptions. Sorry this is so unwieldy but that is how I found the descriptions. I didn’t design the web

site, (If I had, I fear, it would be far worse).

As I said, we expect Tony back in May. He can give the official rundown at that time.

4-H NOW! Come Join Us…

4-H NOW! is Riverside County 4-H’s committee for raising the awareness about 4-H programs in the community with the aim of forming synergistic relationships with business, government & exceptional individuals. What? Come find out! Enjoy our tangential conversations and hang out with really fun people (learn to use big words). Our next meeting will be on Wednesday May 12 at 9:30 am at the Denney’s restaurant at the 215 and 74 freeways. If you plan ahead and can let me know ahead of time that you are coming, write me at:

[email protected] If you prefer to remain spontaneous, that’s great too. See how inclusive we are? Hope to see you there!

Seaside Feather Fanciers Spring Fling

Three of our Riverside County 4-H members and their families attended the Seaside Feather Fanciers Spring Fling show on April 10, 2010 held at the Ventura County fairgrounds. There were 610 birds, give or take a few, entered in the show. Members from the Norco Mustangs included Heather Ross and myself

Amanda Penicks. Alexis Nachtmann represented Perris Panthers’ 4-H Club. Heather Ross exhibited Delaware and Cuckoo Moran winning Best Breed and Reserve

Breed with both the breeds. She also won Junior Champion Rosecomb clean legged with a partridge Wyandotte. Her New Hampshire’s won a first and second place. Heather exhibited 11 birds in all. I, Amanda Penicks exhibited only 6 birds. I entered Old English Game and Modern Game. I received 5- Best of Variety and 1- Reserve Variety, and 6- first place ribbons. Unfortunately, I did not realize the show secretary entered me as an open entry so competition was a little harder competing with the adults. But it’s okay I held my own.

Alexis Nachtmann entered 27 birds at the show and as you will read won many, many awards. Alex won Champion of the Junior Show, Best Jr. Bantam Duck, Best Jr.

Waterfowl, Best Jr. Continental, Best Jr. Heavy Duck, Best Jr. Light Duck, Champion Mediterranean By Jr., Res. Jr. Asiatic, Res. Jr. American, Res. Jr. Continental, Res. Jr. Heavy Duck. In open class she had the ABA Champion Bantam, Best Continental, Res. Heavy Duck. Not to forget her 4- Best of Breeds, 6- Reserve Breeds, 4- Best Variety, and 4- Reserve Variety.

Riverside County 4-H Poultry Show Riverside County 4-H held Their first poultry show (rabbit and cavy shows were also run at the same time) last weekend at the Norco Fairground. The show went very smoothly as if we had done this many times before. I think it helps when some of the members have experience with the large open shows. We had members exhibiting poultry from the Norco Mustangs, Perris Panthers, and two new members from Alvord Aggies 4-H Club. Outside 4-H members included my friends from Santa Rosa 4-H Club, Katelyn Beckmann and Makayla Cozza from Somis 4-H club in Semi Valley. I would like to thank all the people involved with making this first show a success. The Nachtmann family for bringing in the show equipment including the set up and break down of equipment. My mother for securing the grounds, restrooms, hiring the judge, making sure the gates were open and for helping me to organize the classes. My dad for coming directly from work to help set up the heavy tables with Larry and Michelle Nachtmann and their son-in-law, Richard Rodriguez. Also, but not least the 4-H clubs who came just for the sole purpose of helping with cages by laying down the paper under the cages, adding shavings and water cups to each pen. The 4-H clubs who helped were from the Woodcrest Pacers, Murrieta Mustangs, Perris Panthers and the Norco Mustangs. Sheyanne Stewart from the Murrieta Mustangs set up a snack booth. Thanks to all who helped. After the show my friend Katelyn Beckmann and I held a showmanship clinic for all interested members. We taught members to evaluate their birds, walk the bird, proper 4-H dress code, taking the bird in and out of the cage, proper holding of the bird, and how to pose the bird. I believe everyone came away from the clinic learning something new.

Our first show had 9 exhibitors with 86 entries! Awards and pictures on the next page….

Pass Pioneers had a senior team and we had two more seniors that joined forces with Orange County to make a second team. The Pass Pioneers team had members Olga Lefebvre , Hannah Cox, Alice Miank , and Elise Hewitt. This was Olga’s first trip to Nationals and she won top overall individual for horse bowl, surprising all of us since all she did at the study sessions was giggle and laugh. Our Pass Pioneers team won first place and the combined Riverside and Orange County team won third overall and had members from Riverside County Carlisle Tiss and Rebekah Hickman. Despite all three of the leaders having car trouble on the return trip, we all had a great time. Riverside County overall dominated the contest and we will be sending 7 members of our County (and 2 adopted members) to the National 4-H Roundup next January. I also need to comment on a compliment given to our team members from the hotel manager where we stayed. She told me two different times that we had a great group of girls and they were a joy to have as guests of the hotel. I must say that is quite a compliment considering we had a large group of 12 teenage girls! That compliment made me very happy and proud to be their coach J National team members for 2011 are: Rebekah Warren and Jordan Riley will be doing their Team Demonstration Olga Lefebvre, Alice Miank , and Carlisle Tiss will be on the Horse Bowl team. Elise Hewitt, Hannah Cox, and our Fresno team member, Zach Provchy will be on the Hippology team. Formerly of Riverside County , transplanted to SD County, but still part of our team is Rebecca Tierce who will be on the Judging team. Just a note: Jordan Riley qualified for Nationals in all three contests she entered but had to choose one. Rebekah Warren also qualified for both of the contests she entered.

Riverside County dominates the 4-H Horse Classic, educational events at Reedley College !

Submitted By: Lynn Warren, 2010 Riverside County Team Coach

A total of 12 teenage girls and three horse leaders made the trip to Reedley College this last weekend for the State educational events, all vying for a place on the Nationals team to compete in Denver Colorado , January 2011. Saturday’s competition included Hippology, Horse Judging, and the public speaking events. Riverside County had two senior teams and two juniors competing in hippology. Zach Provchy, from Fresno County joined one of our senior teams. We also had one Senior team competing in the judging competition. Becca Tierce, who was formerly from our County but has since moved to San Diego County , also joined our senior judging team. The Pass Pioneers team of Rebekah Riley , Jordan Riley, Elise Hewitt, and Zach Provchy won the top team award. All four of the team members placed in the top ten with Jordan placing 2nd, Elise placing 5th, Zach placing 3rd, and Rebekah placing 9th. The Riverside County combined team placed second overall top team with members Hanna Cox, Rebekah Hickman, Olga LeFebvre, and Alice Miank . Olga placed 10th overall individual and Hanna won the honors of top individual overall!!! Both of our juniors did very well even though they didn’t have a full team Alexandra Tiss won 4th overall individual and Emma Riley won 2nd place overall. Our Horse Judging team comprised of Riverside County members; Jordan Riley, Rebekah Warren, Carlisle Tiss, and San Diego member Rebecca Tierce. Again all four of the team members placed in the top ten! Rebekah won the top overall individual, Jordan placing 2nd, Rebecca placing 4th, and Carlisle placing 9th. That evening the public speaking events were held. Jordan Riley and Rebekah Warren did a team demo titled “When the Stork Visits the Barn” and won first place. Rebekah Riley did an individual demo titled “Patience in a Hurry” and won 3rd place. Sunday’s event was horse bowl! Our two juniors, Emma Riley and Alexandra Tiss, were placed on a team with a Fresno county junior and the three of them won first place team! Emma won 3rd place overall individual and Alex won 4th place.

Alumni Memories Submitted By: Maria Bradshaw One of my best memories of 4-H is Summer Camp. When I went for the first time at the age of 9 my parents made me go, but after that week at Lawyer's I made them send me back every year. Throughout the years I kept in contact with my camp friends as pen pals and even saw each other at a few fairs, but we where never as close as we were at summer camp. When we all turned 14 it was our turn to be Wanna—Be’s. We arrived at camp a day earlier than the campers, but the water wasn't going to be turn on until the next day, so we had to go almost two days with out a shower....Gross! Thank goodness the water was on by the time our Wanna—Be initiation because they covered us with all kinds of leftover food. Oh and I can't forget the fact (though I would like too) that I lost my retainer in the trash after dinner on the night of our formal dance. My friends were out there in their dresses helping dig through the cans. We never did find them. This year I am excited to be able to send my own daughter to camp knowing that her memories will be just as good as mine.

Those who are knowledgeable and take pride in 4-H, feel secure and respected in their jobs, and are recognized and appreciated for the good work they do make excellent Brand Ambassadors. Each day, we should define what it is within 4-H that sparks our enthusiasm, creativity and drive. That will shine through when talking to others.

Recognizing that alumni are the program's best ambassadors, efforts are underway to re-engage as many alumni as

possible. If you are an alumnus, the 4-H Foundation wants to hear your stories, draw on your experience and expertise, and gather information about how 4-H has impacted your life and

the state as a whole. The 4-H Foundation is sponsoring a 4-H Alumni Reunion as

an opportunity for alumni to re-engage, learn about 4-H today, share stories and meet up with old friends. The Alumni

Murrieta Mustangs 4H Club Teams-up with Kohl’s

Submitted by: Sheyanne Stewart, Murrieta Mustangs Adult Volunteer

On April 10th the Murrieta Mustangs teamed-up with the employees of the Kohl’s “A” Team from Kohl’s in Menifee for an Earth Day Community Service Project. The two teams met early Saturday morning to clean-up the hiking trail and creek that runs past the Los Alamos Park in Murrieta. Everyone grabbed a pair of gloves and a trash bag, provided by the Murrieta Parks Department and the clean-up was on.

An abundance of trash was collected from lawn chairs to aluminum cans, from an old water pump to a high school ID card and so much broken glass it made us ask ourselves, what went on down here?

Everyone pitched in a helping hand, members and employees, parents and leaders, little sisters and husbands. The morning ended back at the beginning of the trail with ice water and donuts provided by the much appreciated mom, Lisa Decuir. The trash was hauled away by the ever-so-helpful mom, Shawn Horwitz. Thank you moms!! For our efforts to help our community the Kohl’s “A” Team of Menifee Kohl’s, headed by Mary Applegate donated $500 to our club for our 2009—2010 Bus Stop Shelter Community Service Project. Their donation added to the funds we have already raised this year brought us 2/3 of the way to our goal of $8000. Thank you Kohl’s of Menifee! We’re almost there. And because of our thorough job of cleaning the trail the city of Murrieta has been asked the Murrieta Mustangs to join forces with

them for a quarterly community clean-up. Great

job Mustangs!!
