The President’s Corner…...
This weekend's autocross at Minter Airfield was amazing! Everyone appeared to have a fantastic time. The weather was great, not a
scorcher. The timing equipment held out the entire day without a hitch. Many lap times fell without
too much pride hurt. The competition was fierce and friendly. I would like to thank a few folks who
made this event a resounding success:
* Greg Fullmer and Charles Rooks - Autocross co-chairs
* Linn and Vernell Christopher - Served up a tasty hot dog lunch
* Mike Thomas - Our announcer and club photographer
* Shanell Rice - Taking on Timing and Scoring, announcer, corner worker pep coach and runner
(the basket on her beach cruiser was filled all day long with important items like blue tape for car
numbers and tech forms)
* Janice Witteried - Grid Marshall keeping the cars moving in order (she pointed, you MOVED), not
an easy task
* Kenneth Keenan and Charee Keenan - Loaned us the generator that NEVER QUIT!!
* Betsy Wadman - Handled the craziness that is morning registration and gate entrance
* Pat Wadman - Made sure our corner workers showed up and kept everyone safe
* Spencer and Tammy Harris - Coordinated with the airport on setup and facilities for the event
* Mike McGregor - Making sure we are insured as well as showing up early to help setup
* David Bratcher - Hosting our pre-tech before the autocross
* Minter Field/Shafter Airport (Jonathan Hudson and Kenneth Greene) - For allowing us to hold the
event at their facility
* Golden Empire Mustangs - 6 of their members participated
And thanks to all those too many to mention that helped in some way, setting up the course, tearing
down the course, handing out waters, etc...
Of course none of this could have happened without the participation of all the drivers that joined us
from Golden Empire, Cal Inland and other regions around southern California...
Thank you all!!

The last part of March, Pat, our son Daniel, and I went to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with Steve
Kong. He is from there, so he and his family made things a lot easier for us.
We went there for the Malaysia Formula 1 race, at least the guys did. Sepang is a fantastic race track. Since it
rains a lot, all of the seats are covered. The only F1 track like it, that I know of. The Porsche Carrera Cup was
also there. We saw more 991 GT3's at full song than I will see in a year.
The F1 race was won by Hamilton Petronas Mercedes; which is based in K.L. The track was only half full because
a lot of the events were cancelled because of the loss of MH 370.
If your butt can take some 19 hours of flight time to get there; then it is well worth the trip. The food is varied
and all fantastic--as well as inexpensive. The shopping is everything from small stalls all the way to the
best shopping centers. The temperature was in the 80's to 90's with 95% humidity. Don't need a lot of clothes.
All in all, it is a great place to go.
At my request for the newsletter, Mike McGregor was kind enough to share with us
his incredible Malaysian Trip for the Kuala Lumpur F-1 race. Thank You Mr. McGregor

In some ways the Porsche 911 was an evolution of the 356. It maintained the 356’s rear, air-cooled engine, rear-wheel drive, and 2+2 layout. But as any Porsche fanboy will eagerly tell you, it was an all-new model. For starters, the engine gained two cylinders going from a flat-four to a flat-six, while the individual cylinders lost some displacement (395.5cc to 331.8cc). But perhaps more importantly, the car grew in eve-ry dimension and was designed to be more comfortable than the outgoing 356.
Before we delve into the finer points of the 911’s design, I want to establish that I believe that the 911’s fundamental design is flawed. And I’m certain that I’ll receive emails and comments suggesting I have my head examined or that I stick it in all sorts of horrible places, but I hope that you’ll allow me to explain.
Hanging a massive lump of metal (the engine) out past the rear axle (or front axle, for that matter) increases the car’s polar moment of inertia, which makes it harder to recover control once the car begins a slide (just ask Mr. Jonathan Mills).
This isn’t a real problem for a 40hp VW Beetle, but as power and speeds increase, and hence the speed of weight transfer, it does become an issue. We could discuss physics and the 911’s merits all day, but as my ultimate example consider the vast majority of modern racecars: they are equipped with an engine mounted amidships. That’s probably just coincidence, though, right?
Regardless, the styling is evolutionary, clearly a development from the upside-down bathtub 356, and was all about aero-
dynamics. The overall proportion and stance heavily empha-size the rear engine; however, they’re a bit at odds with the downward sloping roofline and beltline which carry your eyes over the rear too quickly, (consider the substantial flares over the rear wheels in more recent years, designed to counter this) de-emphasizing the rear.
While the proportion and surfaces are a bit at odds, the sur-facing itself, while evolutionary, is beautiful. The transition from the engine cover to the fender as two surfaces seem to become one (they never actually do) is much more elegant than the 356’s rear treatment (it just flattens out, vertically). And from a functional perspective, the low hood, narrow dash and more upright A-pillars allow for a commanding, con-fidence-inspiring view of the road. Personally, I suspect this is the primary reason for the 911’s popularity; the fact that it’s a subconscious feeling makes this part of the design sublime.
In typical, German fashion, detailing is sparse and is limited to items that serve other functions besides pure ornamentation. It is this simplicity that gives the Porsche such a timeless ap-pearance. The Porsche 911 could be described as elegant or efficient, but I think you’d be hard-pressed to call it beautiful in the traditional sense, say like a Ferrari 250GT Lusso. And if you’re so inclined we can debate the merits of a rear-engined car until hell freezes over.
But there is beauty in the design of this car. And that beauty
exists in the organization of multiple, disparate components
that conspire, like a symphonic arrangement, to make you
feel invincible behind the wheel., to make you feel invincible
behind the wheel.

It was practically unthinkable when Porsche introduced the Cayenne in 2002. An SUV... from Porsche? Purists balked, but customers flocked, and the Cayenne pro-pelled the its holding company into such profitability that it practically took over the entire Volkswagen Group. It's now been twelve years since the original Cayenne ar-rived as the first production Porsche with more than two doors, and Zuffenhausen has since followed up with the Panamera, the Macan and the second-generation Cayenne. The latest intel coming in from overseas suggests that Porsche is in the advanced stages of designing a slant-back, five-door Cayenne coupe to take on the likes of the BMW X6 and upcoming Mercedes-Benz MLC. Though the business case (however solid BMW may have already demonstrated it to be) is still being considered, if ap-proved it would join the upcoming third-generation Cayenne on the production line in Leipzig as early as 2018 ? a year after the new Cayenne itself is expected to arrive. The Cayenne coupe would share much with the more conventional MkIII Cayenne (and for that matter the next Audi Q7 and VW Touareg as well as the Lamborghini Urus and Bentley Falcon) but differentiate itself with a more stylish (if less practical) roofline and an altogether sportier attitude. Autocar reports that the design calls for tauter sheetmetal and sportier cabin inspired by the 918 Spyder. Pricing would be positioned a good 15-20 percent higher than the regular Cayenne, and the "coupe" version would likely be offered with most, if not all of the engines available in the conventional version ? including gasoline, diesel, turbo and possibly even hybrid op-tions ranging all the way up to the 550-horsepower Turbo

Plans for Porsche’s Rolling Museum in 2014
The Porsche Museum will again showcase racing vehicles from the marque’s successful history at classic car events around the globe. Highlights in 2014 for the ‘Rolling Museum’ will include the Mille Miglia and the Goodwood Festival of Speed, among others.
From 15th to 18th May the Porsche Muse-um will enter the starting field for the 1,000 miles of the Mille Miglia. Competing in the long-distance road race will be a 550 Spyder, two 356 Coupes and a 356 Speed-ster. The drivers of the vehicles will include Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, Chairman of the Su-pervisory Board of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, and racing legend Jacky Ickx. For both drivers and vehicles the Mille Miglia is still a challenge today, as the new route of 1,750 kilometres is covered in just four days and leads in the main through differing weather zones.
From the 6th to 7th July, the Porsche Muse-um’s classic racing cars will participate in the traditional ‘Paul Pietsch Klassik’. Over a course of 450 kilometres two-time rally world champion Walter Röhrl and Le Mans winner and DTM champion Hans-Joachim Stuck will be driving a 911 Carrera 2.7 RS and a 911 Speedster across the south-west of Germa-ny.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed is incon-ceivable without a Porsche. An annual event since 1993 on the estate of Lord March in
West Sussex, it takes place this year from 26th to 29th June. The Festival of Speed is the largest event of its kind anywhere in the world. Spectators can look forward to see-ing numerous classic Porsche cars, with a focus in 2014 on the ‘Turbo’ theme. The cars to be seen will include a Porsche 959 Group B, a 964 Turbo, a 993 Turbo and a Porsche 935, known as the ‘Baby’ due to its scaled down 1.4-litre engine. Also awaiting the visitors are two special Porsche 917s: the Porsche 917 KH, which brings back memories of the first overall Porsche victory at Le Mans, and the Porsche 917/30, which was developed for the Can-Am race series.
Coinciding with Porsche’s return to the 24-hour endurance race with the Porsche 919 Hybrid, a number of famous Porsche vehi-cles will also be appearing at the Le Mans Classic from 4th to 6th July. This summer the Porsche Museum will send four partici-pants to France – a 911 Carrera RSR Targa Florio, the Porsche 935/77 Group 5 racing car, a 911 Turbo Cabriolet and a 911 Turbo 3.0.
From 10th to 12th July, the Porsche Muse-um will line up several historic legends at the Ennstal Classic, where this year Porsche will be the main theme. With a hill prologue, tours through the Tauern Mountains and a city grand prix, the three-day event provides a festival of motoring for drivers and specta-tors. In addition to a number of Porsche 356 cars, one of which will be driven by Dr. Wolfgang Porsche, a 911 2.2 Targa will also compete. The visitors will have the chance
to admire the skills of former racing drivers such as Walter Röhrl in a 718 WRS, Jacky Ickx in the 550 A Spyder and current Por-sche works driver Marc Lieb in a GT1 1998 as they take part in the Chopard Grand Prix von Gröbming.
The Porsche Museum will also take its clas-sic cars to the 6th Schloss Bensberg Classic, which takes place around the Grandhotel Schloss Bensberg from 18th to 20th July, and from 14th to 17th August it will be pre-sent at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Ele-gance in California. From the 21st to 24th August the Porsche Museum will then be lining up in the Sachsen Classic in Saxony. In the course of this classic car rally, vehicles including a 356 Speedster, a 911 Targa and a 911 Turbo will cover a course of 610 kilome-tres from Zwickau to Chemnitz all around the Vogtland region.
With its concept of the Rolling Museum Por-sche is taking a special approach. Practically all of the museum exhibits are roadworthy and thus fulfill the original purpose for which they were built: to be driven. And the specialists of the Porsche Museum work-shop ensure that both before and during every tour of duty the rolling ambassadors of Porsche history are well prepared and in top fit form for every event. Unlike almost any other motoring museum the Porsche Museum thus stands for variety and vibran-cy. Instead of a conventional, static exhibi-tion, as a result of the exhibits being contin-uously rearranged it offers a constantly changing scene in Zuffenhausen.
