PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

See you on the road, Jim Wellemeyer

Finally the long cold winter has turned into spring, now there aremore projects to do than we can keep track of. Retirement has been aneasy transition for me so far. I have been busy with some travel, twotrips to neighboring Chapter events, the Santa Fe Chapter swap meetand bike show, and the Omaha Chapter National Meet. Then two tripsto Texas for family business, the wedding of my sister’s daughter, which my wife acted as wedding coordinator and florist. Sandwichedin there somewhere was a trip to Colorado to visit my son and, o-yeahI purchased my first American made motorcycle, 1948 Indian Chief.More will follow on this in future.

This is my first attempt at publishing the newsletter, so if thisshows up in your mailbox you will know I was successful. We havesomeone interested in working on the newsletter but I wanted to getone issue published so I would be able to mentor a new editor. If anyof you have a funny motorcycle story or an interesting adventure, maybe something technical about a project, please feel free to share it.You can write it and mail it to me, send it to me in a long email, or jotit down on a piece of toilet paper and bring it to a meeting, (what elsedo you have to do while you’re in there?)

Our proposal for a Sunflower National Road Run has beenaccepted. The date will be October 3rd, 4th, and 5th 2016. I will belooking for lots of help to plan and coordinate this event.

Check the Club Calendar there are a couple of items to make noteof. When I was at the Omaha Swap Meet and Show, their presidentScott Swaney, told me they were planning a Chapter ride that will bebased at Council Grove. Scott invited the Sunflower Chapter to comealong. It will be great to ride the Flint Hills with them. I mentioned inthe last issue a possibility of moving our 25th annual Flint Hills Ride toMay. It now makes more sense to hold it in the traditional month ofSeptember, check the date on the calendar. So this event had beengoing on for many years prior to my joining the club. How about oneof you early day Road Captains stepping forward to lead us on aride into the past. Let me know if you can help out planning thisyears ride.

The annual Sunflower Garage Tour occurred on March 7,which was a few weeks earlier than usual. I was beginning to getconcerned about the early date when a couple of inches of snowfell the weekend before. Fortunately that was followed by amidweek warm up and Saturday was very nice.

The day started at Ed Blockers house and shop with coffee, donuts, and other pastries. Guitar music from Ron Malcomprovided nice addition. Ed had a fine collection of vintageforeign bikes displayed, including Moto Guzzi, BSA, Triumph,Suzuki, Yamaha, Rickman, Benelli, Cotton and others. I visitedEd’s place just a month before, and most people could not realizehow much work Ed put in to get everything ready. Ed had justrecently purchased the property and was still getting moved in, butin just a few short weeks had the place looking great. The largecrowd included Sunflower members, some folks from the Santa FeChapter, and many friends of Ed’s. Travelers from Wisconsincame to see Ed’s 1928 Cotton motorcycle, a deal was closed andthe Cotton went home with them.

The next stop on the tour was Mike Bahnmaiers shop.Mike had a unique blend of motorcycles, from the high techfastest two wheeled machines, to the old and slow antiques. Mikeraces fuel drag bikes and he had a stable full of the fire breathinganimals, all in various stages of preparation for the upcoming raceseason. Everything about these bikes is massive, overall length, the huge twin cylinders, the huge rear drag slick, but everything isalso about getting maximum horsepower to the ground and speeddown the track. In stark contrast to the dragsters were two petitevintage classics. A 1916 Indian was in the middle of a restorationand a 1913 Jefferson on display was and excellent example of anoriginal paint restoration.

After a lunch stop at The Monterey Mexican Grill westopped at Terry Sawyers shop. The shop and all the bikes werelooking good in the bright afternoon sun. Indians looked readyfor a ride and the chrome on the seventies Hondas was gleamingin the sun. Beside his bikes there was a Ford Ranchero in theprocess of getting freshened up and a vintage McCormick Deeringtractor. Jerry Ottaway tried the tractor on for size, but couldn’tfind the kick starter. Jerry looked right at home behind the wheelof the rusty old machine.

There was a great deal of variety in this year’s GarageTour. The crowd however was full of familiar faces of theSunflower members enjoying the early March day.

At Mike Bahnmaier’s shop, a display of awesome power.

There was old iron too. Jeff prefers the vintage.

Jerry, that’s a brake pedal, not the kick starter.

I prefer steam power over these modern gas tractors.

THE FURNACE EVENT

Bill Gordon Photo

When my youngest son was in his early teens, he wasalready a skilled rider. In fact, he had made a small circularracetrack in a field behind our house simply by riding on it. Allthis riding was done on a small lightweight foreign machine thatwas about 160cc. For his 15th birthday present he requested aHarley-Davidson chopper. You must remember this was in the“old” days, the way it “once was!” That spring we picked up a1938 Harley, 45 c.i., and proceeded to “chop.” After doing all theusual things, which included the smuggler seat, coffin tank, apehangers, ect., we were ready for the testing.

The weather was terrible, with snow and ice covering all thestreets. The wind was howling like crazy and it was cold. Myfather would have said, “Twarn’t fit for man nor beast!” Severalfriends who had been following the progress managed to get there,so they could see the maiden voyage. The furnace in our workshopgarage was running steadily, trying vainly to keep up with thethermostat. The driveway outside the overhead door had beencleared of snow and ice, so this plan evolved. We would start the

engine then roll the machine backward out into the driveway asfar as possible, then ride into the workshop and stop.

I made the first couple of rides, making sure the brakeswere all right, and the clutch was releasing okay. Then son Stangot on the machine. After rehearsing the “suicide clutch,” handshift, and foot brake, he rolled out into the cold. The engineroared as it revved to high rpm, the back tire let out a loud squeal, and Stan was almost airborne as he entered the building. Heimmediately applied full panic brakes, and while the rear wasmaking a black skid mark on the floor, the front wheel penetratedthe furnace! The wheel entered right into the intake air box of thefurnace, engaging the filter and crumpling it into a big wad. Thiscaused the filter to release a big bunch of dust into the furnacewhich promptly blew it right into the crowd of spectators.

There was no damage to Stan or the Harley, but thefurnace never fully recovered. You can imagine howembarrassed Stan was, but it was even worse when the crowdstarted whistling, and cheering and calling for an encore! He wasreally red.

Where can you find AMCA members on the coldest day inFebruary? Well, Sunflower members like Jeff Roth, Terry Sawyer,Larry Burke, Kelly Wardell and Ellen Hittle, gathered at FreemontNebraska for the Omaha Chapter Swap Meet and Bike show. The36th edition of the Lincoln Highway National lived up to itsreputation for great show bikes, parts swapping, antique enthusiastsand winter weather. The meet has been notorious for challengingmembers with winter weather, sometimes there was too much snowto either get there or get back home. This year the weather wasrelatively tame with a few light snow flurries and zero degree temps.

This was my first time attending the meet, and it was likeattending a reunion of friends and family. It was obvious that thiswas a crowd that had attended many of the past meets. There was awide variety of bikes entered in the show. They ranged from dailyriders to gorgeous museum quality restorations. In the latter classwas a 1907 Wagner motorcycle, presented by Howard Wagner. Thebike has been painstakingly restored, no detail was missed. Everynut bolt and plated washer was assembled with precision andcorrectness. One of the highlights of the meet was when one ofHoward’s friends climbed on the Wagner, pedaled furiously, andwith Howard at the controls the old single cylinder sputtered to lifeand settled into an even idle.

The well attended event included a sold out banquet on Fridaynight with a very good buffet dinner. A message by AMCApresident Richard Spagnolli preceded a presentation by GeneHarper from the Rocky Mountain Chapter who covered thehistory of the Henderson Motorcycle Company. It was a greatpresentation covering the history and relationship of Excelsior,Henderson, and Schwinn with great pictures and documentationof the factory in Chicago.

I enjoyed the meet and plan to make this a regular winter trip.

Looks like Larry made a deal.
