    Making a Living in Fleischmanns

The first Post Office in our area opened in Clovesville in 1824. By 1851, Grifffin's Corners had its own Post Office, with Matthew Griffin as Postmas-ter. In 1888, a separate Fleischmanns Post Office opened at the Depot, to handle the business from the Fleischmann Family Estate and nearby. These two offices combined in 1915. There was a Post Office in Bedell from 1903 to 1961, and one in Halcott from 1862 until the early 1990's. For many years, postal work provided one of the few steady year-round sources of work. The last Postmaster of Fleischmanns to LIVE here was Jim Fuller, whom many will remember. A number of postal clerks and carriers still call Fleischmanns home. The card depicts the Post Office, next to the Movie Theatre, where it conducted business from 1978 until the late 1990's when it moved to its present location.

Scenic Byway Advances On Friday, May 1st, members of the Central Catskills Collaborative went to Albany to pre-sent the case for the creation of The Central Catskills Scenic Byway. The New York State Scenic Byways Advisory Board had reviewed the proposed submission, and after a brief presentation, voted to approve it. The final, for-mal step will be ap-proval by the Legisla-ture and Governor, but this was the big step. In the works for seven years, the Byway will soon be call-ing increased attention to our Catskills and the Route 28 corridor as a tourism destination.

Fleischmanns Museum Opens for 2015 The Greater Fleischmanns Museum of Memories will open for the 2015 season on Saturday, May 23rd, in conjunction with the Fleischmanns First Memorial Day Weekend Street Fair. There will be an exhibit of newly-donated items, and a special exhibit

this year on the Pepacton Reservoir and the towns lost as a result of building it. Hours from May 23rd to June 28th, and again in September and early October, will be Satur-days from noon to 3 PM. During July & August, the Museum will also be open Thursdays & Fridays noon - 3 PM. (Also look for it to be open some Sundays, by chance.)

As part of this years Headwaters History Days, there will be a special walking tour of Fleischmanns on Sunday, May 31st, start-ing at the Museum at 11 AM. (HeadwatersHistoryDays.org.)
