WETA FocusThis month, WETA again helps bring to the American public the special performance National Memorial Day Concert, broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The annual event, airing on WETA TV 26, WETA HD and public television stations nationwide on May 24, honors American armed forces personnel and those who have made the ultimate sacrifi ce for the nation.

In the days surrounding Memorial Day, WETA presents an array of programming that spotlights America’s men and women in uniform, their service, and their families at home. These performance and documentary fi lms are presented as part of a special new WETA community initiative, Honored to Serve. The initiative, which launched in April and will extend for two years, will help inform and educate the public about the people of the nation’s armed forces.

Despite more than a decade of war, many Americans are less connected than ever to those in uniform. Today a tiny percentage of Americans serve in the all-volunteer military, and a strong tradition of service within families means that the strains of active duty and redeployments are felt acutely within a community of military professionals that is small relative to the general population. Honored to Serve is aimed at helping viewers more fully recognize these citizen-soldiers as an important, integral part of the American family, rather than viewing service personnel as “a force apart.”

This special programming will be of varying lengths, from brief interstitial segments to full documentary fi lms. In May, Honored to Serve programs include the National Memorial Day Concert, the WETA TV 26 fi lm Arlington National Cemetery, the WETA production A Salute to the Troops: In Performance at the White House, and more.

WETA reprises Ken Burns’s acclaimed, epic 2014 documentary, which weaves the stories of President Theodore Roosevelt, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt, three members of one of the most prominent and infl uential families in American politics. The seven-part, 14-hour series, a co-production of WETA and Florentine Films , marks the fi rst time their individual stories have been woven into a single narrative. The fi lm premiered in September, drawing more than 33 million viewers, and was among the highest rated of Ken Burns’s fi lms.

The Roosevelts, written by Geoffrey C. Ward and narrated by Peter Coyote, follows the family’s story for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. The series encompasses all the extraordinary history the Roosevelts helped to make — the creation of National Parks and the digging of the Panama Canal, the New Deal and the defeat of Hitler, and the postwar struggles for civil rights at home and human rights around the world. But it is also an intimate human story about love and betrayal, family feeling, personal courage and the conquest of fear.

Marking Memorial Day, WETA presents special programming that honors the service and sacrifi ce of American men and women in uniform, their families at home, and all Americans who have given their life for their country. On Sunday, May 24, WETA again partners with Capital Concerts, Inc. to bring to the nation National Memorial Day Concert, the annual concert broadcast live from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. For the tenth year, actors Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise co-host the broadcast of this night of remembrance, which this year features a line-up that includes multi Grammy Award-winning musical artist Gloria Estefan; The Voice 2014 winner Tessanne Chin; classical cross-over artist Katherine Jenkins; renowned tenor Russell Watson and distinguished American leader Colin L. Powell USA (Ret.); in performance with the National Symphony Orchestra under the direction of maestro Jack Everly.

Before this year’s concert, on Sunday, May 24 at 7 p.m. tune in for the acclaimed 2014 WETA TV 26 fi lm Arlington National Cemetery, examining the history, mission and daily operations of this sacred place, an American landmark. On the holiday itself, May 25, tune in throughout the day for encore airings of this year’s Memo-rial Day concert, previous years’ concerts, and, at 8 p.m. Arlington National Cemetery — see the TV listings for timings. A new WETA TV 26 broadcast and community engagement initiative spotlights those who serve in America’s Armed Forces, and their families at home, and aims to foster a deeper appreciation of the nation’s military history, helping Americans to recognize soldiers and their families as an important part of a wider national family. Those who serve are now often the sons and daughters of service members, making military service a “family business” that touches a relatively small community of Americans but far less the general public. Today less than ½ percent of Americans serve in the armed

forces. WETA television viewers will see an array of on-air programming in this initiative, from two-minute locally focused interstitials to full documentaries created for national audiences. This month, “Honored to

Serve” programming includes A Salute to the Troops: In Performance at the White House and The Lincoln Awards: A Concert for Veterans & the Military Family (May 22), Arlington National Cemetery and National Memorial Day Concert (May 24), and The Homefront (May 25). Additional Honored to Serve programs will air surrounding Independence Day and Veterans Day.

Spotlighting young creatures as they learn the lessons of life, the Wednesday-night series Nature explores the various stages of growing up in the animal kingdom, from the very fi rst precarious steps to the fi rst experience of independence. For a few, this happens just moments after birth, when they are abandoned to rely entirely on their instincts to survive. But for most young animals, there is some time, aided by a parents or a mentor, to learn and hone the skills — often through play — that will enable them to survive. The fi lm follows the trials and tribulations of young black bears, African elephants, ducks, tigers, ibex, skimmers, macaques, naked mole rats and other animals as they prepare to leave home. Additional Nature programs this month are Parrot Confi dential (May 6) and The Sagebrush Sea (May 20) and My Bionic Pet (May 27).

A 2003 BBC series features former EastEnders star Tamzin Outhwaite as Sergeant Jo McDonagh, a new, bright recruit to a Germany-based unit of the Army’s Special Investigation Branch (SIB), the elite plain-clothes detective unit of the Royal Military Police that investigates serious crimes connected to members of the British Army. Navigating in a male-dominated institution, McDonagh must prove her detective skills — and watch her back as she probes diffi cult cases. McDonagh and the SIB team fi nd themselves involved in the murky underworlds of drug and gun-related crime, murder and human traffi cking, espionage and political cover-up, and terrorism. Running alongside the crimes and the investigations are tensions and power struggles within the ranks of investigators. The series was created by Patrick Harbinson, who wrote for the series Soldier Soldier and whose credits include Sharpe, Hornblower, ER and Dark Angel.

Rupert Penry-Jones (MI-5, The 39 Steps) stars in an atmospheric, brooding 2009 drama that follows members of a modern team of detectives in London’s Whitechapel district who are contending, in Series One, with copycat killings that replicate mur-ders committed by Jack the Ripper a century before. The murderer stalks the night, picking off vulnerable victims, and the locals live in fear. The police remain clueless, with no motive, no evidence and no hope of catching the barbaric killer. Assigned to the cases is fast-tracked Detective Inspector Chandler (Penry-Jones), a novice in the

business of murder. His fellow offi cers, however, are seasoned professionals, and chief among them is DS Miles (Phil Davis), the archetypal cynical, seen-it-all detective. Aiding them is “Ripperologist” Edward Buchan (Steve Pemberton). Can Chandler and the team do what offi cers failed to do more than 100 years before, and catch the criminal?

From the makers of MI-5, Hustle and Life on Mars, an action-packed 2008 series set in modern Britain explores whether operating outside the usual parameters of the law — under the pretext of protecting it — can ever be justifi ed. Andrew Buchan plays Johnny Mercer, a former deadly operative in the British Army’s Special Forces who is impris-oned for murder. Mercer, sprung early by a shadowy police operative who makes it clear that freedom comes at a price, is brought into a mysterious covert state security squad, a vigilante branch of the police system that dispatches criminals who are beyond the reach of the law. Mercer must also contend with misfi t colleagues in the unit, including an irrepressible young roommate with a puerile personality, and a beautiful and amoral colleague (Tamzin Outhwaite). Members of the team each bring their abilities to bear on their fundamental mission — to bring order where the law has failed.

“The lights are dimmed, the conductor steps on the podium, raises his baton after a moment of suspenseful silence, and we hear an almost inaudi-bly soft tremolo in the strings. Very gradually and with some hesitation, the theme emerges from this background. The mood is awe-inspiring and festive. The slow pace at which this music unfolds is a clear indication that time has to be measured in unusually long units. We are listening to a symphony by Anton Bruckner.”

This experience, so eloquently described by Peter Laki in his program notes for the National Symphony Orchestra’s performance of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8 in C Minor, awaits you on this month’s broadcast of NSO Showcase on Classical WETA 90.9 FM, Wednesday, May 6 at 9 p.m. The concert was recorded at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in June 2014; Christoph Eschenbach conducts.

Bruckner’s Eighth, his largest and last complete symphony, delivers “one of the most existentially thrilling experi-ences a symphony has ever created,” according to Tom Service of The Guardian. Begun in 1884, the symphony took three years to complete, only to be rejected by a conductor Bruckner greatly admired. It then underwent a long period of revision and delays before it was fi nally premiered in Vienna in 1892 to a highly partisan audience. Brahms and the critic Eduard Hanslick had negative reactions (“Symphonic boa constrictors” — Brahms; and “the future belongs to this nightmarish hangover style” — Hanslick.) The composer Hugo Wolf, on the other hand, wrote a few days after that fi rst performance: “This Symphony is the creation of a Titan, and in spiritual vastness, fertility of ideas and grandeur even surpasses his other symphonies....Its success was almost without precedent. It was the absolute victory of light over darkness, and the storm of applause at the end of each movement was like some elemental manifestation of Nature. In short, even a Roman Emperor would not have wished for a more superb triumph.”

According to The Guardian, this is not a musical journey to be undertaken lightly: “Bruckner’s Eighth is an act of enormous empathetic consolation because it’s unafraid to confront and to recognize sublime terror and darkness as well as light. Just like him when he wrote the piece, you need to feel engaged in that ‘battle of demons’ when you’re listening.”

Pianist evgeny Kissin on Front Row Washington

You’ll often fi nd the words “superstar pianist” alongside the name Evgeny Kissin. A prodigy who began improvising on the piano at age two, Kissin is known as much for his virtuosity at the keyboard as for his depth of expression, lyricism and power. That he is also passionate about Jewish literature and poetry is not something you’d expect him to bring to the concert hall stage. In February 2014, however, Kissin did exactly that in a performance presented by Pro Musica Hebraica and the Kennedy Center, where he alternated solo piano works of 20th century Jewish composers with recitations of Yiddish poetry. As Washington Post chief music critic Anne Midgette wrote in her review of the concert: “To hear both together, offered without pretension but with the simple directness of an open heart, linked everyone in the hall on a shared journey into the past; even for those of us who do not have memories of Yiddish-speaking grandparents, Kissin was a living embodiment of a bygone world.”

You can experience Kissin’s remarkable performance Monday, May 4 at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s weekly Monday night concert showcase, Front Row Washington. The broadcast features Ernest Bloch’s Piano Sonata Op. 40, Alexander Veprik’s Sonata No. 2, and Alexander Krein’s Suite dansée, Op. 44 along with Kissin’s dramatic recitation of Yiddish poems by Haim Nachman Bialik and Isaac Leybush Peretz.

Front Row Washington then continues a two-decades-long tradition on Monday, May 11, presenting highlights from the annual Fredericksburg Chamber Music Festival. The following week, the May 18 broadcast features a delightful Latin-infused recital from the Marlow Guitar Series with Chilean-born guitarist Carlos Pérez.

On Memorial Day, May 25, at 9 p.m., Front Row Washington ends the month as it began, presenting a unique pairing of repertoire. Brooklyn-based composer/pianist Timo Andres opened his January 2015 Phillips Collection recital with his own work “At the River,” and then without pause alternated Schubert impromptus with etudes by the contemporary American composer Philip Glass. That Mr. Andres so successfully pairs works by these composers who lived two centuries apart speaks volumes about the need to revisit our notions of how music is set in time and place.

Just like today, things in the past some-times came together quickly and as planned, and sometimes, they didn’t. The Choral Showcase broadcast on May 31 demonstrates both ends of the spectrum. It’s a Te Deum program, opening with Handel’s Dettingen Te Deum. Handel, well established in London, was asked to write a celebratory piece marking the defeat by the British army (under King George II) of the French at the Battle of Dettingen; the victory was June 27, 1743. Only a month after the battle, the piece, a grand 40-minute work, was fi nished! The premiere was given later that year in London, and George II was there.

The other extreme came in New York 150 years later, as Czech composer Antonín Dvorák was arriving in America to head up the National Conservato-ry of Music. His fi rst concert was to include a new work

by him, The American Flag, but the text for the piece was late in coming from the Americans so the piece had to wait three years for its premiere. As a result, Dvorák’s new highlight piece for the concert was a

different composition, already fi nished but not yet debuted: the Te Deum.

The Te Deum text is a 4th-century Christian hymn of praise. The title comes from the

opening Latin words, “Te Deum Laudamus” (Thee, O God, We Praise). The hymn is still used in the Catholic Church, and some in Anglican Communion and Lutheran churches, always for major events on the or-

der of election of a pope or consecration of a bishop. It’s been set to music by many, including

Haydn, Mozart, Berlioz, Verdi, Bruckner and Britten. All are heard regularly on Choral Showcase, along with the Handel and Dvorák.
