WETA FocusWETA makes lifelong learning accessible to all through our superb broadcasts, and we are especially proud of our commitment to our youngest viewers, whose educational journey is just beginning. With the school year just weeks away, it is a good time to note the important service WETA provides to this very special audience.

As part of the company’s educational mission, WETA broadcasts a wide array of excellent children’s programs each weekday and Sunday morning on principal channel WETA TV 26, and around the clock daily on the WETA Kids channel, which is devoted exclusively to children’s shows. These offerings include some of the most-watched children’s series in America. Each is developed from educational research, and these programs provide a safe haven for children where parents, grandparents and other caregivers can fi nd trusted content. Through engaging adventures that feature popular characters, WETA Kids offerings help youngsters develop vocabulary and learn literacy skills, understand math and science concepts, nurture healthy social and emotional lives, and be inspired by the love of learning. Complement-ing our on-air services to children are WETA community outreach efforts, including children’s literacy workshops for parents and caregivers — and our stellar Learning Media websites that offer outstanding resources on literacy, learning disabilities and other topics. Visit weta.org/kids to learn more.

On our other channels this month: August heralds a variety of entertaining television specials on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD that showcase music, culinary exploration, mystery, history (including Ken Burns’s acclaimed production The Civil War, created in partnership with WETA) and much more; and among WETA UK programs, we feature the 2002 drama series The Forsyte Saga, a classic.

Thanks for tuning in, and thank you for your support for WETA.

JFK & LBJ: A Time for Greatnessairs Tuesday, August 4 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

Fifty years after President Lyndon Johnson signed two of the most important laws Congress ever approved — the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 — a documentary examines how Johnson worked behind the scenes to transform American society. Using all the tricks he had learned as a long-serving U.S. Senator, LBJ cajoled, fl attered, wheeled and dealed, outwitting Southern segregationists who were determined to maintain the nation’s racial divide. Five decades later, LBJ’s moral journey is chronicled by those who were closest to him: senior presidential aide Joseph Califano, civil rights adviser Harris Wofford, and principal speech writer Richard Goodwin (who penned Johnson’s famous “We shall overcome” speech). All were involved in seeing through the changes that President Kennedy had fi rst proposed in 1963.

Morgan Freeman narrates JFK & LBJ: A Time for Greatness, which also features former CBS News correspondent Roger Mudd, sent by the network to cover the Civil Rights debate; historian and LBJ biographer Doris Kearns Good-win; author Todd Purdum (An Idea Whose Time Has Come); U.S. Representative John Lewis; and LBJ’s daughter Luci Baines Johnson. They illuminate how LBJ, raised with the prejudices of his time, became a champion of equality.

Iconic Sleuths on WETA TV 26/HDMiss Fisher Uncovered airs Thursday, August 6 at 8 p.m.

Miss Marple begins Thursday, August 27 at 8 p.m. Masterpiece Mystery!: Sherlock 3

begins Sunday, August 30 at 9 p.m.

A new special goes behind the scenes of the acclaimed Australian series, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, spotlighting novelist Kerry Greenwood’s gorgeously costumed “lady detective,” the Honorable Miss Phryne Fisher (portrayed by Essie Davis), as she is brought to life on screen. The program explores the ethos of the series, centered on the thoroughly modern, independent woman who investigates crimes in jazz-age Melbourne with a pistol close at hand — and, more often than not, a male admirer even closer. Also for mystery fans, WETA reprises several superb productions in late August, presenting an encore run of classic BBC adaptations of crime novelist Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple stories, starring Joan Hickson, and Masterpiece’s most recent Sherlock series (Season 3), featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as the great detective.

My Music: Starlight Ballroomairs Saturday, August 8 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

Following on the popular program The Big Band Years, a new music special from My Music series impresario TJ Lubinsky celebrates the golden era of swing, spotlighting

the legendary orchestras, bandleaders and singers who ruled America’s radio and dance halls, bringing joy and escape during the World War II and postwar years. Harkening back

to a time when ballrooms across the United States hosted the biggest bands in the country as they travelled from city to city with dance numbers and beautiful ballads, the program features such musical artists as Tex Beneke, Perry Como, Doris Day (above), Ella Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman, The Ink Spots, Peggy Lee, The Mills Brothers, Dinah Shore, Mel Torme and others performing classic songs such as “Accentuate the Positive,” “You Always Hurt the One You Love,” “In the Mood,” “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love,” and “If I Didn’t Care.”

Simon & Garfunkel: The Concert in Central Park

airs Saturday, August 8 at 10 p.m. & repeats August 10 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

On September 19, 1981, Simon & Garfunkel held a free public concert on Central Park’s Great Lawn in New York City, raising money to restore the world’s most famous urban park. The duo had rarely performed since their breakup in 1970, but their music continued to resonate with the city from which they came. The Concert in Central Park was Simon & Garfunkel’s biggest gift to their hometown: more than 500,000 people were in attendance. The performance features the duo’s greatest hits as well as selections from their solo catalogs, arranged with an expanded 11-man band.

My Music: ’60s & ’70s Slow Songsairs Saturday, August 15 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

Beautiful ballads from the late 1960s and 1970s are back in a relaxing My Music special that features top hits such as “The Look of Love,” “(Last Night) I Didn’t Get to Sleep at All,” “Annie’s Song,” “The Most Beautiful Girl” and more from a lineup of artists including The 5th Dimension, John Denver, Engelbert Humperdinck, Anne Murray, Charlie Rich, Kenny Rogers, Neil Sedaka, Dusty Springfi eld (left), Andy Williams, and many others. Hosted by actress-singer Cheryl Ladd (of Charlie’s Angels), ’60s & ’70s Slow Songs is a romantic retrospective of the classic love songs that ruled radio airplay and warmed listeners’ hearts during an otherwise tumultuous time in history — and appealed to pop music fans of all ages.

Il Volo: Italiaairs Saturday, August 15 at 9:30 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD

A new concert event from the ancient archaeological ruins of Pompeii, Italy, features the popular vocal trio Il Volo performing Italian favorites before a live audience in their fourth public television special. The young Italian tenors, Piero Barone, Ignazio Boschetto and Gianluca Ginoble, pay homage to their home in Italy via the concert’s music repertoire, which includes specially arranged classic songs in addition to new originals, including their single “Grande Amore,” backed by an orchestra and rhythm section. The trio showcases their trademark perfect harmonies as they share one of the most iconic landmarks from their home country.

Handel’s Israel in Egypt on Choral Showcase

Sundays, August 16 & 23 at 9 p.m. on Classical WETA 90.9 FM

By David Ginder, Morning On-Air Host

Israel in Egypt is regarded today as one of Handel’s great oratorios and has been revered for almost 250 years. On hearing it, Haydn exclaimed, “He is the Master of us all!” and was inspired to write his own oratorios, including The Creation. Handel’s Israel in Egypt was even popular in the 19th century, when Baroque music was otherwise considered old and irrelevant — but the piece did not always enjoy such success.

Unlike J.S. Bach, who never traveled far from home, German-born George Frideric Handel lived and worked widely. In Hamburg and in Italy, he learned about opera. In England, where he lived and worked almost 50 years, his most visible accomplishments were fi rst in opera and

then oratorio. It’s the switch between the two that sheds light on Israel in Egypt.

The need for the switch at all was caused by Londoners who, over time, got tired of opera. Changing the source of the stories — usually Biblical for oratorios and virtually anything for opera — but retaining how the drama was presented —by singers and instruments — was brilliant, even if it seems obvious today. (Saving money on sets and costumes was a bonus.)

But Israel in Egypt was not the average oratorio, and this explains its rough start. The soloists do not represent the characters of the story, but rather are unspecifi c presenters in narrative form. (The same is true in Mes-siah, which was composed three years later.) Even more startlingly different was the fi rst version of Israel in Egypt, where, not only were soloists not involved at the character level, but they were almost not involved at all! All the story-telling was done by the chorus. That may seem like a reasonable option to us today, but, to the former opera audience in 18th-century London, expecting dazzling soloists to tell the story with brilliant arias and moving duets, it was bewildering. They were understandably in a rejecting mood.

Handel recognized his “mistake.” He fi xed subsequent versions, and you have a chance to experience both! We air the original version of Part I (with all choruses) on Choral Showcase on August 16, and the “fi xed” version (with smaller ensembles too) of the whole piece on August 23. Both performances are from Trinity Wall Street conducted by Julian Wachner.

By Deborah Lamberton, Senior Producer

The Classical WETA 90.9 FM weekly local performance program Front Row Washington begins the month at Down-town Piano Works in Frederick, Maryland, with a captivating recital by Ukrainian-born Israeli pianist Inesa Sinkevych on Monday night, August 3 at 9 p.m. Called “a Schubertian of real distinction” by MusicWeb International, her program of music from Spain and Hungary includes Schubert’s “Hun-garian Melody,” as well as selections from Book II of Iberia by Isaac Albéniz and Béla Bartók’s Improvisations on Hungarian Peasant Songs.

August 10: When violinist Miranda Cuckson had to choose a topic for her doctoral thesis at Juilliard, she chose the recital works of American composer Ross Lee Finney. It was a good decision — she received the Rich-ard F. French Prize for best doctoral dissertation and went on to record fi ve CDs of music featuring American composers, including Finney. You can hear her take on Ross Lee Finney’s Fiddle-Doodle-Ad, a charming piece that includes eight popular fi ddle tunes from “Rosin the Bow” to “Cotton Eye Joe.” Cuckson’s Phillips Collection recital includes two other violin sonatas; one by Janácek, and one by Richard Strauss, composed while in his early twenties just prior to penning his famous tone poem Don Juan.

August 17: J.S. Bach’s Partita No. 6 in E Minor anchors our next Front Row Washington program, which features the American debut recital of Argentinean pianist Nelson Goerner at the Phillips Collection. Winner of the Franz Liszt and Geneva Competitions and a regular at BBC Proms, Mr. Goerner also performs Mendelssohn’s “Scottish Sonata” and Felix Blumenfeld’s wickedly diffi cult piano etude for left hand.

August 24: Celebrated cellist and Peabody graduate Zuill Bailey has an international reputation as soloist, chamber musi-cian, festival director and teacher, but he has also garnered fame for his Telarc recordings, thanks to repeat appearances as Number One on the Classical Billboard Charts. Highlights from his Phillips Collection recital include the cello transcription of César Franck’s famous A major violin sonata, a work so popular it was adapted for fl ute, saxophone and even tuba, although the setting for cello and piano was the only alternate version Franck approved.

August 31: Chances are you didn’t know Leonard Bernstein wrote a clarinet sonata, but you’ll get the opportunity to hear this rarely performed work. Bernstein dedicated his sonata to David Oppenheim, who as head of CBS Masterworks signed Glenn Gould to the label after hearing Gould’s American debut recital at the Phillips Collection in January 1955. Spanish-born clarinet-ist Jose Franch-Ballester, an Avery Fisher Career Grant winner, includes the Bernstein Sonata on his Phillips Collection recital, along with Brahms’ beloved F Minor Sonata, Op. 120, and Francis Poulenc’s equally popular Sonata for Clarinet and Piano — both works penned late in the composers’ careers.
