This month, WETA marks the anniversary of an extraordinary event in the nation’s capital with a slate of special television programming. A half-century ago, on August 28, 1963, in the year of the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, hundreds of thousands of people converged on the city from around the country to participate in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The massive, diverse, peaceful protest for equality and opportunity, then the largest gathering ever in Washington, made history — perhaps most memorably through Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s soaring speech, which with enormous eloquence encapsulated and articulated the aspirations of African Americans, and indeed, of all humanity.

The March was a watershed event in the long struggle to combat institutionalized discrimination and economic injustice and to secure full constitutional rights for all citizens of this nation, bringing the campaign for civil rights to a new prominence. Tune in to WETA TV 26 and WETA HD this month, and learn more about this important epoch in our nation’s history.

On Classical WETA 90.9 FM this month, our broadcasts of sublime music include an array of lovely local performances recorded at the Phillips Collection Sunday Concerts. They air on our Monday-night program Front Row Washington — details are on page 13. Classical WETA listeners, you may have noted a new voice on the air in recent weeks. We are delighted that announcer Bill Bukowski has joined the WETA staff as weekday afternoon host. Learn more about Bill below.

Thank you for your support for WETA.

Classical WETA 90.9 FMWelcomes Bill Bukowski

Weekday Classical WETA 90.9 FM listeners are getting to know a new voice on the air as announcer Bill Bukowski settles in as the station’s new after-noon host. Bukowski joined the WETA staff in July. In addition to his Classical WETA duties, Bukowski will announce for the station’s all-vocal classical radio service, VivaLaVoce. Formerly, he was primary classical announcer at WSCL, the Eastern Shore public radio station based in Salisbury, Maryland, where he worked for nearly two decades.

The announcer grew up in Philadelphia, inspired by music in his parents’ household and by the city’s rich radio offerings, including classical music on WFLN. Bukowski graduated from the University of Scranton in 1983 and the following year moved to the Delmarva Peninsula to work in commercial radio, transitioning to public radio in 1993 as weekend producer-announcer on

WSCL, where three years later he became mid-day classical music host.Bukowski and his wife, Michele, now reside in Northern Virginia, where they enjoy concerts, plays, art galleries and

museums, history, reading, cooking, travel, and taking tea together. Bill is an avid music collector, and plays guitar, mountain dulcimer, and ukulele.

WETA Commemorates theMarch on Washington

on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, in which 250,000 protesters gathered on the National Mall to peacefully demand an end to two centuries of racial discrimination and economic injustice. After marching to the Lincoln Memorial, the assembled crowd heard musical performances and a series of speakers including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (at right, with other March leaders), who that day delivered his electrifying “I Have a Dream” speech. This month, WETA presents a slate of television programming that celebrates the event, explores the Civil Rights Movement, and spotlights Washington — and America — during an era of profound change.

In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music from the Civil Rights Movement airs Tuesday, August 27, 8 p.m.

In this WETA production, President and Mrs. Obama host a 2010 concert in the East Room in honor of the Civil Rights Movement. Musical artists include Bob Dylan and Joan Baez (who each performed during the March on Washington), and Natalie Cole, John Mellencamp, Smokey Robinson, the Blind Boys of Alabama, and many others.

The March airs Tuesday, August 27, 9 p.m., repeating August 30

A documentary spotlights the March on Washington, a watershed event in the Civil Rights Movement that helped change the face of America. The fi lm explores the story behind the 1963 event through the remembrances of key players, histori-ans, journalists, authors and ordinary citizens who joined those who came to the nation’s capital on that momentous day.Major funding for The March is provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting’s Diversity and Innovation Fund, and PBS.

Freedom Riders: American Experience airs Tuesday August 27, 10 p.m.

From May through November 1961, more than 400 Americans — including John Lewis, the chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and later a leader of the March on Washington — risked their lives, traveling together on buses and trains through the Deep South in a challenge to segregation. Many endured savage beatings and imprisonment, but they brought the American public face to face with the challenge of correcting civil rights inequities.

My Music: 60s Girl Grooves airs Saturday, August 3 at 8 p.m., repeating August 5 & 9

Mary Wilson of the Supremes spotlights the greatest female groups and soloists of the early and mid-1960s as the ongoing series My Music presents an all-archival celebration that features original performances. Curating worldwide video archives with rare footage from the vaults, series creator TJ Lubinsky says, “This period in American pop music was very special. It was a time of innocence, angst, puppy love, heartbreak and, most of all, great memories of carefree youth.” 60s Girl Grooves features early rock and pop at its best,

including performances by The Marvelettes, Martha & the Vandellas, the Shangri-Las, the Shirelles, the Crystals, the Ronettes, the Supremes, Dusty Springfi eld, Lesley Gore, Petula Clark, and Aretha Franklin, among others.

Elvis, Aloha from Hawaiiairs Saturday, August 3 at 6:30 p.m.,

repeating August 6, 10 & 11

At the pinnacle of his superstardom, Elvis Presley made television history when his Elvis, Aloha from Hawaii concert special was beamed via satellite to a global audience 40 years ago. Entertainment events presented live via satellite are common today, but in 1973, this was a fi rst. Never before had one performer held the world’s attention in such a way. The concert took place at the Honolulu International Center Arena in Hawaii on January 14, 1973, and was beamed live around Asia and seen in approximately 30 European countries later the same day. Americans would have to wait until April 4, when an edited version of the concert, expanded with songs videotaped just after the live event, was presented on NBC. In all, it was a global smash, seen in approximately 40 countries by close to 1.5 billion people — more people than saw astronauts landing on the moon. Check listings for repeat times.

With new episodes of Foyle’s War coming in mid-September on Masterpiece Mystery!, an August special goes behind the scenes of the award-winning World War II series that has capti-vated fans for more than a decade. Actor Len Cariou hosts the program, which features a recap and favorite moments of the fi rst six seasons, and explores the creation of the series, the decision to set it during World War II, the extensive research that goes into each episode, the casting of Michael Kitchen (right) as DCS Foyle, the casting and progression of Sam Stewart played by Honeysuckle Weeks, and exciting secrets from Foyle’s upcoming transition to the Cold War and intelligence gathering in the new episodes. The program also includes interviews with creator and writer Anthony Horowitz (Poirot and Midsomer Murders), historians, and series stars includ-ing Honeysuckle Weeks (Sam); Anthony Howell (Milner) and Daniel Weyman (Wainright).

My Music: The Best of Burt Bacharachairs Thursday, August 1 at 8 p.m., repeating August 7

AMy Music special celebrates the legendary songwriter whose popular melodies have touched millions of music lovers around the world for more than half a century. Burt Bacharach teamed with lyricist Hal David to create some of the most successful pop music ever in radio, television and fi lm. Hosted by Robert Wagner, this archival special includes original

artists performing Bacharach’s hits in rare footage and clips from the 1960s to the 1980s. Bacharach and David achieved a stunning run of classic songs, in tandem with artists such as Dionne Warwick (“Walk on By,” “I Say a Little Prayer,” “Alfi e”), Dusty Springfi eld (“The Look of Love”), Jackie DeShannon (“What the World Needs Now Is Love”), The Carpenters (“They Long to Be Close To You”), and B.J. Thomas (“Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head”). The 1980s witnessed more chart-toppers, including “That’s What Friends Are For” and “(There’s) Always Something There to Remind Me.”

American soprano Sondra Radvanovsky hosts the broadcast and conducts backstage interviews.

Choral Showcase in AugustSundays at 9 p.m.

Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Sunday night broadcast Choral Showcase is richly varied this month. On August 11, a war and peace program marks the World War II armistice anniversary (this month), and the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg (last month). The August 11 program begins with music from Haydn’s unsettled Mass in Time of War, written when Europe was embroiled in war following the French Revolution. The performance is conducted by Richard Hickox, who also conducts Britten’s War Requiem, commissioned to mark the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral after the original’s destruction during World War II. Written in the early 1960s, the composition’s text comes from the Latin Requiem Mass and from poetry by Wilfred Owen, an English soldier killed in World War I. The Choral Showcaseprogram on August 11 also includes Avner Dorman’s Letters from Gettysburg, with a text using letters written by 1st Lieutenant Rush P. Cady, a casualty of the battle. The Dorman recording is from a recent concert performance by the Gettysburg College Choirs and Percussion Ensemble.

Other Choral Showcase programs include the fi rst Classical WETA airing (August 25) of a recent St. John Passion performance conducted by Monica Huggett, and a Solomon-based program (August 18) of Handel’s Oratorio plus Solomon-inspired works by Vaughan Williams and Percy Grainger.

August brings a wealth of great performances from The Phillips Collection on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s weekly local concert broadcast, Front Row Washington. Started in 1941, the Phillips Collection Sunday Concerts is the longest continually running concert series in Washington, D.C. On Monday, August 5 at 9 p.m. the program presents pianist Spencer Myer performing the complete Book 1 of Claude Debussy’s Préludes and Book IV of Iberia by Issac Albéniz. On August 12, the Verdehr Trio (at right) offers individual movements selected from the more than 200 works they’ve commis-sioned over the past four decades from composers including Alan

Hovhaness, Ned Rorem, Bright Sheng and Peter Sculthorpe.

The August 19 broadcast features the talented, young Amphion String Quartet, performing Leoš Janácek’s String Quartet No. 2, “Intimate Letters,” Hugo Wolf’s Italian Serenade in G Major, and a wonderful pairing of Schubert’s Andante from his unfi nished String Quartet in C minor, D. 703 with Bruce Adolphe’s 2010 own take on the same work, called Fra(nz)g-mentation. This month’s Phillips Collection programs conclude on August 26 with another talented young ensemble — the Horszowski Trio (at left). Their program includes Mozart’s Piano Trio in B-fl at Major, K. 502, the Piano Trio No. 1 in C minor, Op. 8, “Poème” by Shostakovich, and Antonín Dvorák’s deeply engaging Piano Trio No. 3 in F minor, Op. 65.
