Ken Burns PresentsThe Story of Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies

A Film by Barak Goodman The WETA Co-Production Premieres in Spring 2015

A monumental new WETA project in the works since 2011, the three-part, six-hour television series The Story of Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies will premiere in spring 2015. The series is the product of a unique collaboration between WETA, top fi lmmakers Ken Burns and Barak Goodman, and preeminent organizations battling cancer in America. Based on Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee’s 2011 Pulitzer Prize-winning book, The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, the program is being produced by Burns’s company Florentine Films, Laura Ziskin Pictures

and WETA, in association with Ark Media. A comprehensive history of the disease, The Story of Cancer is a “biography” of cancer that spotlights cancer from its fi rst documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic battles in the 20th century to cure, control and conquer it, to a radical new understanding of its essence at a time of great progress in knowledge and treatment. The story of how we arrived at this moment, what it means for patients today, and where we go from here forms the heart of the series, which is three fi lms in one: a history documentary, an intimate vérité fi lm following patients and caregivers, and a scientifi c report.

The Story of Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies is accompanied by a WETA-created website, TheStoryofCancer.org, that is adding resources and features now in advance of the series premiere. The site, where you can soon share your story, serves as a platform for discussion surrounding cancer issues — the scientifi c, the historical

and the personal — addressed in the series. The project also features an extensive nationwide community engagement and outreach campaign, on which WETA is partnering with PBS stations across the country, as well as project support-ers Genentech; Cancer Treatment Centers of America; Siemens; David H. Koch; Bristol-Myers Squibb; the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation; Kovler Fund; The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations; the American Association for Cancer Research; the American Cancer Society; Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation; the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; and PBS. Follow the project at TheStoryofCancer.org and facebook.com/CancerFilm and on Twitter via @CancerFilm, and join the conversation with project hashtag #CancerFilm.

White HouseThe WETA production airs Friday, November 7

at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

In advance of Veterans Day, a new WETA music special, A Salute to the Troops: In Performance at the White House, features an all-star tribute to Americans in military service. The hour-long concert, produced by WETA, in association with AEG Ehrlich Ventures and The GRAMMY Museum, will be recorded before a live audience that will include hundreds of military personnel on the South Lawn of the White House on November 6 — and premiere the next night on public television stations nationwide, airing as part of the PBS Fall Arts Festival. President and Mrs. Obama will host the concert event, which will include performances by Mary J. Blige, John Fogerty, Willie Nelson and Romeo Santos. Also taking the stage to perform will be active duty military members Sgt. Christiana R. Ball, U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Matt Smith and Capt. John Ed Auer. The rock band Daughtry will also be part of the event, participating via satellite with a performance from a USO concert in Japan.

There will be a live-viewing audience of active duty members of the military from the USO Warrior and Family Center at Fort Belvoir, in Virginia, and footage of their participation will be included in the broadcast. The broadcast, part of the White House “Joining Forces” initiative, will also be presented to American service personnel and civilians at U.S. Department of Defense locations around the world on Veterans Day, via the American Forces Network.

Broadcast of the program is made possible by a special collaboration with USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore and USO, Inc. A joint sponsorship by The Boeing Company and Lockheed Martin provides major corporate funding for this event. Additional funders include the Anne Ray Charitable Trust, The Annenberg Foundation, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, PBS and public television viewers.

In a star-studded, mid-October evening of comedy and tributes, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts presented the 17th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor to comedy icon and longtime Tonight Show host Jay Leno in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. As it has since 2000, WETA captured the Mark Twain Prize proceedings as a gathering of Leno’s friends and colleagues paid tribute to the humor and accomplish-ments of the entertainer. The 90-minute television special, Jay Leno: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize — a pro-duction of WETA, CoMedia, Mark Krantz Productions, Cappy Productions and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts — will be broadcast by WETA and PBS stations nationwide on Sunday, November 23. Among the special guests and performers appearing in the program are Garth Brooks, Kristin Chenoweth, Kevin Eubanks, Jimmy Fallon, Chelsea Handler, Al Madrigal, Seth Myers, Jerry Seinfeld, JB Smoove and Wanda Sykes — with special appearances by Jamie Foxx and Betty White.

Jay Leno is the 17th recipient of The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. Past recipients of the prize have been Richard Pryor (1998), Jonathan Win-ters (1999), Carl Reiner (2000), Whoopi Goldberg (2001), Bob Newhart (2002), Lily Tomlin (2003), Lorne Michaels (2004), Steve Martin (2005), Neil Simon (2006), Billy Crystal (2007), George Carlin (2008), Bill Cosby (2009), Tina Fey (2010), Will Ferrell (2011), Ellen DeGeneres (2012) and Carol Burnett (2013).

It was in May of 1992 when Leno followed in the foot-steps of legendary NBC late-night hosts Steve Allen, Jack Paar and Johnny Carson as host of the popular late-night television program The Tonight Show, on which Leno fi rst appeared as a comedian in 1977. Prior to becoming host, Leno had been Johnny Carson’s exclusive guest host on the show since September 1987. An indefatigable per-

former, Leno loves to test his humor on audiences across the nation, performing more than 100 live appearances in nightclubs, theaters and stadiums each year, including during his tenure hosting The Tonight Show.

Leno has also gained an international following on the internet with his new creation, Jaylenosgarage.com, win-ning an Emmy Award and two additional nominations for Outstanding Special Class–Short-Format Nonfi ction Pro-grams. Leno himself is the recipient of the People’s Choice Award and numerous other honors, including a Harris Poll selection as most popular star on television. The comedian is a bestselling author and, when he is not performing, writing, or doing charitable work, he does voice-over work in fi lm and television. An avid collector of classic cars and motorcycles, and a builder of his own vehicles, Leno is also a monthly columnist for Popular Mechanics.

Leno was born in New Rochelle, New York, and raised in Andover, Massachusetts. He and his wife, Mavis, live in Los Angeles.

The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor was created in 1998 to recognize the art of humorists who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist best known as Mark Twain.

Corporate funding for Jay Leno: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize is provided by Capital One and by Comcast NBCUniversal. Major funding is provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, PBS and public television viewers. Air travel is generously provided by American Airlines.

Following on the award-winning TV 26 productions Washington in the ’60s and Washington in the ’70s, a new, one-hour WETA fi lm explores the decade of the 1980s in the nation’s capital, examining politics, society and cul-ture of the era. The city emerged as a cosmopolitan world capital during those years, even while Washington was earning a national reputation for challenges that mirrored those faced in communities nationwide.

Voices in the FilmThe history of the decade is illuminated via the remi-niscences and insights of 20 prominent local fi gures — including radio journalist Kojo Nnamdi, former Red-skins coach Joe Gibbs and quarterback Doug Williams, television journalist Mau-reen Bunyan, entertainment reporter Arch Campbell, political commentator and politician Pat Buchanan, former D.C. mayor Marion Barry, former D.C. police chief Isaac Fulwood, city councilwoman and longtime mayoral candidate Carol Schwartz, and others — who either made news or were in a position to closely observe events in the city as they unfolded. Each shares their perspective, and Gordon Peterson, WJLA anchor and longtime host of political roundtable Inside Washington, narrates the fi lm.

Political and Social UpheavalWashington in the ’80s explores a period of challenge, division and turmoil in the city after the hopefulness for increased social cohesion that sprung from the Civil Rights era in the 1970s. The fi lm explores the administrations and policies of Mayor Marion Barry, including the growth of leadership roles for African Americans, as well as the politician’s personal downfall; documents the Reagan revolution that came to the nation’s capital and ushered in a new period of friction between local and federal entities;

and examines the tragedies that resulted from the advent of crack cocaine. The moniker “Murder Capital USA”, homelessness, and the onset of the HIV/AIDS epidemic are among the many topics explored in the documentary, as are the responses from the Barry and Reagan administrations and civil society.

Culture, Sports and Media Dynamism While the city and its citizens suffered their trials in that era, in other aspects of life, Washington in the 1980s proved vibrant. The city stimulated business growth and preserved great spaces, including Union Station and the

Old Post Offi ce, while creating new ones such as the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The fi lm also relates how Washington experienced a musical fl owering in the rhythm-heavy music named “go-go,” and in a local brand of punk rock and its growing club scene. The theater scene expanded signifi -cantly during the decade as well. In this era, the city

also became markedly more gay friendly, and the program explores why.

In sports, the 1980s saw the advent of the Joe Gibbs era in Redskins football history, and Washington in the ’80s recounts the tough start and glories that followed. The city also embraced Georgetown and Maryland basketball, which too mounted impressive achievements. The 1980s were also a golden age for local media, and the fi lm and its participants remember the era’s news teams and major local news events they covered, includ-ing the attempt on President Reagan’s life and the crash of Air Florida Flight 90.

Tune in for all that and more in Washington in the ’80s, and note that the fi lm repeats Wednesday, November 26 at 8 p.m., airing in tandem with previous TV 26 docu-mentaries on Washington history in the 1970s and 1960s.

Icons of Comedy on WETA TV 26 & WETA HDRobin Williams Remembered airs Monday, Nov. 3 at 10 p.m.

American Masters: Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work airs Monday, November 10 at 10 p.m.

Special programs this month spotlight the lives and work of two iconic comedians — Robin Williams, who died in August, and Joan Rivers, who passed away in September. The program Robin Williams Remembered: A Pioneers of Television Special (November 3) presents a celebration of the award-winning late comedian, TV star, and fi lm and stage actor, featuring one of his last in-depth television interviews, and including clips from his career and tributes to Williams. The program also includes a new interview with Williams’ former Mork & Mindy co-star Pam Dawber, who worked most closely with the late comic. Other celebrities sharing stories about Williams and discussing his career range from co-stars Henry Winkler and Yakov Smirnoff, to Penny Marshall, the late Jonathan Winters, Whoopi Goldberg, Jerry Stiller and Jimmie Walker.

Also this month, American Masters features Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work (November 10), a 90-minute fi lm taking a year-long ride with the irreverent comedienne in her 76th year of life. The vérité documentary peels away the public mask of the late performer, laying bare Rivers’ indefatigable work to keep her career thriving and to reinvent herself. Enjoying unguarded access, the fi lmmakers explore the comedic process and the toxic mixture of self-doubt and anger that often fuels it. Rivers’ was the quintessential story of survival and of determination: she was the female pioneer who cut paths and broke boundaries in the otherwise all-male world of comedy, opening the door for other comediennes to follow.

In the Spotlight

Sloths, Beavers and Killer Whales on NatureWednesdays, November 5, 12 & 19 on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

Nature this month visits Panama, Costa Rica and Colombia to spotlight sloths; travels around the U.S. and Canada to explore the world of beavers; and braves the Arctic to follow killer whales. A Sloth Named Velcro (November 5) relates the story of a young journalist’s year 2000 encounter with a tiny orphaned sloth in the jungles of Panama. The two were inseparable for two years until Ana reintroduced “Velcro” to the wild. In the program, the woman returns to Central and South America to learn about the sanctuaries and rehabilitation centers that are springing up as development displaces

these gentle creatures and scientists work to learn more about sloths in order to protect them. Also this month, the reprised program Leave It to the Beavers (November 12) examines how these creatures are responsible for creating fertile landscapes across North America. A growing number of

scientists, conservationists and environmentalists have come to regard beavers as overlooked tools in reversing the effects of global warming and worldwide water shortages: these industrious rodents are adept at controlling water and have been transforming and reviving landscapes for thousands

of years. The program tells the story of North America’s beavers — their history, their near extinction, and their comeback as modern day eco-heroes.

In Invasion of the Killers Whales, Nature explores how a growing number of the world’s greatest aquatic hunters are moving into Arctic waters in the sum-mer months as the ice shrinks. More and more have been attracted to these hunting grounds by the growing expanse of open water, and they are compet-ing with polar bears, already under pressure from reduced hunting grounds —

for the same prey: seals and narwhal, beluga and bowhead whales.

Support for Nature is made possible in part by the Arnhold Family in memory of Clarisse Arnhold, Sue and Edgar Wachenheim III, the Estate of Elizabeth A. Vernon, the Lillian Goldman Charitable Trust, the Kate W.

Cassidy Foundation, the Filomen M. D’Agostino Foundation, Susan Malloy and the Sun Hill Foundation, by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and by public television stations.

A fter 25 years, 12 series, and 70 productions, one of the most iconic, popular and acclaimed programs in public television history, Agatha Christie’s Poirot, concludes this month with its fi nal adaptations of the crime novelist’s tales — the last three programs featuring David Suchet in his signature role as the brilliant Belgian detective who uses his “little grey cells” to crack cases that baffl e mere mortals. The fi nal feature-length mysteries culminate with Curtain: Poirot’s Last Case, an adaptation of the story that bestselling author Christie wrote in 1942 and kept under wraps in a bank vault until its publication in 1975, the year before her death.

In Elephants Can Remember (November 6), Poirot investigates a famed psychiatrist’s murder while crime novelist Ariadne Oliver (Zoë Wanamaker) looks into a couple’s death; in The Labors of Hercules (November 13),

Poirot journeys to the Swiss Alps to lay a trap for an art thief; and in Curtain (November 20),an ailing Poirot, with weakened fl esh but mind still sharp, re-turns once more to Styles with his old friend Captain Hastings (Hugh Fraser)

and confronts a killer and his own conscience as he tries to stop a series of murders.

Decades since Poirot’s debut and immediate success on the literacy landscape in 1920 in “The Mysterious Affair at Styles,” the character is now inextricably associ-ated with Suchet. His portrayals, which began in 1989, are considered defi nitive, closest to the descriptions of the detective in Christie’s stories, and even blessed by Christie’s daughter Rosalind, fi ercely protective of her mother’s work. She and her family cautioned Suchet, in

“approving” him (after casting) for the role, that “we want the audience to smile with Poirot but never to laugh at him.” Suchet obliged, fi nding his character through close readings of the Poirot tales themselves, right down to the fastidiousness, conceit, “rapid mincing gait” and fl air for the dramatic that the author described. Viewing audienc-es, of course, like the millions of fans of the novels, lovethese oddly endearing, amusing foibles. The numbers say it all: the Poirot television series, a mainstay of Masterpiece Mystery! in the U.S., has been watched by some 700 mil-lion viewers in 100 countries worldwide.

This month, as part of Poirot’s swan song, WETA reprises Being Poirot (November 27, 8 p.m.), a special that follows Suchet in his fi nal production sessions as he elaborates on the role. Describing his transforma-tion into character, Suchet notes the importance of the sleuth’s characteristic walk, distinctive voice, and, of course, the trademark mustache: “Once that mustache goes on that lip, I think it’s true to say that you are speak-ing to Hercule Poirot.” Suchet describes the role as “a great gift”: “Hercule Poirot for me is much more than a character on the written page; Hercule Poirot for me is almost a real person,” said Suchet. “I’ve gotten to know him, I’ve lived him.”

Brimming with opulent 1930s period details and pitch-perfect performances, the lavish adaptations made for su-perb television, with Suchet’s method acting the keystone. Poirot’s legions of fans perhaps took for granted that there would always be more — but non, mes amis. Cue the piano and saxophone of Christopher Gunning’s BAFTA-winning theme, and roll the fi nal credits. Au revoir, Poirot, and merci beaucoup!

Final three episodes air Thursdays, November 6, 13 & 20 at 9:30 p.m.,

Navy Seals: Their Untold Storyairs Tuesday, November 11 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

Marking Veterans Day 2014, a two-hour special explores the transformation of U.S. Navy frogmen into the warrior elite Navy SEALs, recounting the ticking-clock missions of the “Commandoes of the Deep” through fi rsthand accounts and through footage and home movies. Admirals, master chiefs, clandestine operators, demolitioneers and snipers relate how U.S. Navy SEALs (Sea, Air and Land) became the world’s most admired commandoes. The story of how these clandestine forces evolved and how their abilities shaped history has remained largely untold. This is the fi rst time that Naval Special Warfare has assisted with the research of a documentary about the teams and their forefa-thers. The fi lm is airing as part of the PBS Stories of Service initiative.

Dinosaurs, Clay Warriors & Landslides on NOVAWednesdays, November 5, 12 & 19 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

Science series NOVA feature diverse topics in three November episodes. On November 19, Killer Landslides explores how in less than two minutes in March, a one-square-mile fi eld of debris slammed into the Washington state community of Oso, killing 41 and destroying nearly 50 homes. Geologists are investigating what triggered the deadliest U.S. landslide in decades and are exploring whether risks are increasing of similar disasters around the globe. Below, an Air Force volunteer works in deep mud while trying to remove debris from where a house once stood in the hopes of fi nding missing persons following the Oso slide. Other NOVA programs this month include Bigger Than T. Rex (November 5), exploring the story of century-old dinosaur fossil bones that were from a creature larger than Tyrannosaurus rex — a

“Spinosaurus” — but which were lost in a World War II bombing raid. Now, the discovery of new bones in Morocco is reopening the investigation into this epic beast, a 53-foot-long behemoth. Emperor’s Ghost Army (November 12) spotlights China’s famous life-sized terracotta warriors, 9,000 of which were discovered in the vast mausoleum of the fi rst Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang.

Ice Warriors: USA Sled Hockeyairs Friday, November 14 at 10 p.m.

on WETA TV 26 & WETA HDA portrait of the U.S. sled hockey team as it prepared for international competition in the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia, chronicles the journey of the team and its players. Sled hockey is a fast-moving game of force, speed and strategy, played at eye level on molded sleds propelled with serrated ice picks — and contested just as aggressively as “stand-up” hockey. Ice Warriors spotlights the personal triumphs and trials of the athletes, and challenges preconceptions and assumptions about the capabilities of people with disabilities.

Several members of the team are “wounded warriors” — military veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars — who had life-changing injuries. Others were challenged by birth defects, disease or injuries.

Major funding for Ice Warriors: USA Sled Hockey is provided by Bruce C., Alex, Conner and Lynn Bay Dayton with additional funding provided by the Gordon and Llura Gund Foundation, No Limits Media, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and PBS.

Providing a Safe Haven for Children

Odd Squadpremieres Wednesday, November 26 at 10 a.m. on the WETA Kids channel; then airs weekdays

at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. beginning November 27

Odd Squad, a new half-hour, live-action media series designed to help kids ages 5-8 learn math, premieres this month on the WETA Kids channel on November 26 with a special one-hour broadcast of two back-to-back episodes at 10 a.m. before adopting a weekday 8 a.m./8 p.m. slot the next day. The show focuses on two young agents, Olive and Otto, who are part of the Odd Squad, an agency whose mission is to save the day whenever something unusual happens in their town. A math concept is embedded in each of their cases, and Olive and Otto work together to problem-solve and use math skills to put things right when oddness strikes. Odd Squad was created by the makers of The Electric Company and is produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment and The Fred Rogers Company. Above (l-r), Sean Michael Kyer is Agent Oscar; Millie Davis is the chief, Ms. O; Dalila Bela portrays Agent Olive; and Filip Geljo is Agent Otto.

Odd Squad is funded in part by the U.S. Department of Education through the Ready To Learn Initiative, a program that supports the development of innovative educational television and digital media targeted to preschool and early elementary school children and their families, and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).C

WPC 56: Gina Dawsonairs Tuesdays at 8 p.m.

starting November 11 on WETA UK

Set in 1956, the 2013 British drama series WPC 56: Gina Dawson centers on the challenges faced by the fi rst woman to join the police force of her West Midlands home town. As the only Woman Police Constable (WPC) on the Brinford beat, Gina Dawson (portrayed by Jennie Jacques) struggles to overcome sexist attitudes and gain acceptance in a male-dominated police force. In this fi rst of three seasons of the production, Chief Inspector Roger Nelson gives Dawson menial duties and assigns her work dealing with children and women. The Brinford force typically deals with teenage runaways, “Teddy Boy” gangs and petty criminals in their small city. However, the lines of the law start to blur when the hunt for a killer draws the team into a criminal underworld of shady boxing clubs, brothels and nightclubs — all run by a ruthless gangster who is as dangerous as he is untouchable. As this situation unfolds, the unwanted attention of a senior offi cer pushes Gina to cross a line that could mean the end of her career.

Death in Paradise, Series 1 & 2airs Fridays at 9 p.m.

starting November 7 on WETA UK

WETA UK reprises Death in Paradise, a light-hearted 2011 crime drama and fi sh-out-of-water story set in the fi ctional paradise island of Saint-Marie in the Caribbean (and fi lmed on the islands of Guadalupe) with a French- and English-speaking population. Ben Miller (Malice Aforethought, The Worst Week of My Life and Primeval) stars as straight-laced London police detective Richard Poole, who, at the series’ outset, has arrived to investigate the murder of his predecessor and ends up staying on to head the island’s misfi t team of detectives, despite a pronounced distaste for the island, sun and sand. The quintessentially British cop fi nds a ramshackle station and a very different type of policing, and he tries to bring rigor to the relaxed workplace. His team includes Detective Sergeant Camille Bordey, portrayed by Sara Martins.

Last Tango in Halifax, Series 2airs Saturdays at 8 p.m.,

starting November 15 on WETA UK

WETA UK presents Series 2 of the acclaimed, BAFTA-winning comedy-drama about romance and second chances from the writer of Scott and Bailey and a director of Sherlock. The series, star-ring Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid, follows the relationship of love-struck septuagenarians Alan and Celia, who rediscover their love for each other later in life — 60 years, in fact, after they fi rst met. As they plan a life together and try to fi nd the long-awaited happiness they deserve, secrets from the past come tumbling out and family members adjust to changing relationships. In Series 2, Alan and Celia decide to have a romantic secret wedding as soon as possible, but how will their respec-tive daughters, the uptight Caroline (Sarah Lancashire) and rebellious Gillian (Nicola Walker), react? The two women are discovering they can get along, but one’s confession could jeopardize the soon-to-be stepsisters’ fl edgling friendship.

Also this month on WETA UK: Masterpiece’s Victorian department store drama The Paradise, Series I/II, starring Joanna Vanderham (at left), airs Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. and continues at 9 p.m., and the original House of Cards series and Prime Suspect continue, respectively, at 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and 9 p.m. on Thursdays.

Celebrating a 200th birthday is always notable but not necessarily fun, unless it’s the birth anniversary of Adol-phe Sax, inventor of the saxophone. On Monday night, November 3 at 9 p.m., Classical WETA 90.9 FM local concert broadcast Front Row Washington celebrates the instrument and its founder with the most widely heard saxophone quartet in America, the Washington Saxo-phone Quartet. WSQ member and Classical WETA host Rich Kleinfeldt joins Nicole Lacroix for a concert of music presented by the Barns at Wolf Trap featuring the Quartet. From Aaron Copland’s Simple Gifts to Samuel Barber’s famous Adagio, Op. 11 to music from local

composer/conductor Thomas Beveridge’s Ballet d’Amour, you won’t want to miss this evening featuring the Washington Saxo-phone Quartet.

On the following Monday, November 10, we go to Colum-bia, Maryland for a Candlelight Concert Society recital by a talented pianist. Eighteen-year-old George Li, winner of the 2012 Gilmore Young Artist Award, performs Schoenberg’s Sechs Kleine Klavierstücke as well as a Beethoven sonata, Rach-maninoff’s Corelli variations, and Maurice Ravel’s iconic La Valse.

We then hop over from Columbia to College Park, Maryland, on Monday, November 17 for a fabulous duo recital by violinist James Ehnes and pianist Orion Weiss. Both accomplished soloists and chamber musicians in their own right, the two take the stage at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center for Aaron Copland’s Sonata for Violin and Piano, Grieg’s Sonata No. 2 in G Major, the scherzo from Brahms’ F-A-E Sonata, and Schubert’s C Major Fantasy for violin and piano.

On November 24, Hungarian pianist Dénes Várjon offers a wonderful exploration of Bartók’s piano music at The Phillips Collection, including 2 elegies for piano, a sonatina of Romanian folk tunes and several of the Hungarian Peasant Songs, as well as Beethoven’s Funeral March Sonata and Schumann’s Fantasiestücke, Op. 12. In all, an intriguing month of music-making on Front Row Washington, heard at 9 p.m. every Monday night on Clas-sical WETA — your destination for live, in-performance recitals in and around Greater Washington.

Classical WETA Celebrates CPE Bach By Bill Bukowski, Afternoon On-Air Host

Earlier this fall I journeyed to the German Embassy near Georgetown for a concert celebrating the 300th anniversary of the birth of CPE Bach. Performing was the Croatian-born pianist Ana-Marija Markovina, who played a few selections from her new recording of the complete keyboard works of CPE Bach: a monumental 26-CD box set released this year on the Hänssler Classic label. After the concert she stopped by our studios to chat with me about the recording project, and about the composer. Markovina believes that CPE Bach not only defi es categories, but belongs in a category by himself. His empfi ndsamer Stil, or “sensitive style,” considered too modern for its time, was radically different from that of his father and in turn opened the door to the music of the composers who came after him. It was Mozart who wrote of CPE Bach that “he is the father; we are the boys. Everybody who has accomplished something has learned from him.”

Classical WETA will be celebrating the 300th anniversary of CPE Bach throughout November, with Ana-Marija Markovina’s recording of the complete keyboard works planned as a Classical WETA CD Pick-of-the-Week. My Clas-sical Conversation with Markovina will be posted online at classicalweta.org. She offered one last bit of advice in ap-proaching a 26-CD box set of CPE Bach’s keyboard music: Markovina recommends listening selectively — and we will be doing just that. The last discs in the set present the keyboard sonatas Wq. 65, works CPE Bach wrote only for himself. As Ana-Marija says, “If you want to meet him, start there.”

NSO Showcase Returns!Wednesday, November 5 at 9 p.m.

By Nicole Lacroix, Evening On-Air Host

NSO Showcase — featuring the National Symphony Orchestra recorded live in concert — returns for a new season on Classical WETA 90.9 FM, kicking off with a fi rst: Brahms’ First, that is, in addition to works by Mozart and Elgar. The 2014–2015 season of NSO Showcase, the program’s 7th season on the air, begins on Classical WETA on Wednesday, November 5 at 9 p.m.

Christoph Eschenbach conducts Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68 (in a December 2013 perfor-mance) and Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 in D major, k.218 (also from December 2013), the latter featuring NSO concertmaster Nurit Bar-Josef as soloist. British conductor Sir Mark Elder will lead the NSO in Sir Edward Elgar’s concert overture In the South.

Brahms was 42 when he fi nally premiered his fi rst symphony, after a gestation period of 21 years. He told a friend that “you have no idea what it’s like to hear the footsteps of a giant like Beethoven behind you.” Brahms took his time to develop his own symphonic voice, and once he did, he triumphed, and the fi rst symphony was followed soon after by three others.

When Mozart was only 13, he became assistant con-certmaster to Michael Haydn (younger brother of Joseph) in the Salzburg Court Orchestra. During his eight-year tenure, he frequently wrote pieces for himself to play with the orchestra. So it’s very appropriate that this NSO Show-case program features Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4, a concerto written for a concertmaster, by a concertmaster, and played by NSO concertmaster Nurit Bar-Josef.

Hallé Orchestra conductor Sir Mark Elder recently admitted in a Telegraph article that one of his “fi ve favorite things” was “being in Italy with my family.” Well, here’s the next best thing: Sir Mark will lead the NSO in Elgar’s sunny concert overture, In the South (Alassio), Op. 50 (recorded in January 2014), composed during a 1903 Elgar family vacation in Italy!

Enjoy this wondrous music played by our own National Symphony Orchestra. NSO Showcase airs on the fi rst Wednesday of every month at 9 p.m.

CPE Bach on Choral Showcase

By David Ginder, Morning On-Air Host

This month, the Classical WETA 90.9 FM celebration of composer Carl Philipp Emanuel (CPE) Bach’s 300th birthday anniversary extends to Choral Showcase on Sun-days, November 9 and 16 at 9 p.m. The Magnifi cat — one of the Marian hymns, which has been set by many composers, including CPE’s father Johann Sebastian Bach — came at the end of CPE’s years in Berlin. He was harpsichordist for Frederick the Great at the time, and most of his music from the period was instrumental, including hundreds of keyboard sonatas. The Magnifi cat — unusual in CPE’s output both because it was a choral piece and because of the startling range of different styles within its nine movements — must surely have been destined for a specifi c purpose. None is known, but the work may have been a show-off piece for CPE’s audition to succeed his father at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. Impressive though the piece is, he didn’t get the job. CPE returned to the Magnifi cat later in life, and seems to have been inspired by it then to write other big choral pieces, including his impressive Motet for double chorus, “Heilig ist Gott.” Both works have been recorded recently by the RIAS Chamber Choir and Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, conducted by Hans-Christoph Rademann. The Motet airs on the Sunday night, 9 p.m. broadcast Choral Showcase on November 9; the Magni-fi cat on November 16.
