WETA FocusIn late March and early April, we are very pleased to premiere the three-part WETA co-production Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies on WETA TV 26 and WETA HD — and on PBS stations around the country. Accompanied by a nationwide outreach campaign, this comprehensive report on the disease will spark a new conversation about cancer in America. James Baker: The Man Who Made Washington Work

Narrated by Tom Brokaw, the new documentary fi lm James Baker: The Man Who Made Washington Work explores the life and long political career of James A. Baker III, a remarkably savvy power player, dealmaker and diplomat respected on both sides of the aisle for his ability to get things done. Now 84, Baker was instrumental in getting three presidents elected, served in top posts for two of them, and was a central player in some of the most momentous events of the late 20th century. As White House chief-of-staff, Treasury Secretary and Secretary of State, he respectively facilitated the Reagan Revolution, negotiated the Tax Reform Act of 1986, and brought the Cold War in for a soft landing. Baker also put together the unprecedented coalition of nations that fought the fi rst Gulf War, and he organized the Madrid Peace Conference that brought Arab nations and Israel to the table for the fi rst time in modern history.

Candid revelations from Baker and fi rsthand accounts from former Presidents Clinton, Carter, and Bush Sr.; former Secretaries of State Condoleezza Rice and Henry Kissinger; and journalists, authors and historians provide an eye-opening, behind-the-scenes story of power, persuasion and diplomacy at the highest levels. The fi lm is writ-ten, directed and produced by Eric Stange with John Hesse as executive producer.C

& Masterpiece Classic: Mr. Selfridge 3 begins Sunday, March 29 at 9 p.m. Two popular Sunday-night dramas return for an eight-week run, as Call the Midwife

and Masterpiece Classic: Mr. Selfridge return with new seasons on March 29 and air through May 17. Inspired by the engaging memoirs of Jennifer Worth, Call the Midwife 4 features more stories of the nurses,

midwives and nuns of Nonnatus House as they aid families in London’s East End. In Season 4, the series enters the early 1960s, and a new nurse arrives. In the series Mr. Selfridge, created by celebrated Masterpiece writer Andrew Davies (who adapted Pride and Prejudice for television), Jeremy Piven returns as the fl amboyant department store magnate Harry Gordon Selfridge, who brought American-style retailing to the U.K. Season 3 opens in 1919, with the war fi nally over and Harry and his family coping with wrenching change.

Downton Abbey Season 5 Finale on Masterpiece

Sunday, March 1 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

The latest season of Golden Globe- and Emmy-winning Masterpiece series Downton Abbey wraps up on March 1 with a two-hour fi nale that features more than a few surprises across a wide array of plotlines: What fate will befall Anna and Bates? Will Isobel accept Lord Merton’s proposal? Will the prince sweep Violet off her feet? Is Edith’s secret safe? What is Thomas’ latest mischief? Will Lord Sinderby warm to Rose? What will become of Carson and Mrs. Hughes’ venture? What’s eating Robert? Will Branson depart for the New World? And what of Mary? In this episode, the Crawley family decamps to the north on an extended visit with Rose’s in-laws that includes a shooting party and plenty of intrigue — before returning to Downton Abbey to celebrate Christmas. After the season-ending episode, stay tuned for more drama in Season 6 next year.

The Jewish Journey: Americaairs Tuesday, March 3 at 8 p.m. on WETA TV 26 & WETA HD

A fi lm by Emmy Award-winning director Andrew Goldberg (A Yiddish World Remembered, The Armenian Genocide), traces Jewish immigration to the United States through the centuries, using fi rst-hand accounts and history records to explore how and why generations made the voy-age. The fi lm is narrated by journalist Martha Teichner of CBS News. Interviews with top scholars in Jewish history, notable Jewish-American writers, and many immigrants themselves detail the varied stories of migration through the last fi ve centuries, with a rarely explored look at the actual journeys to get here. The Jewish Journey: America examines what it meant to be part of a tight-knit Jewish community in a diverse range of countries, and what prompted those families to leave their enclaves for America. Moving through the centuries, the fi lm follows the trajectory of Jewish American life from arrivals in the mid-17th century through the impact of the Nazi regime in World War II, the creation of Israel, and the new challenges of 21st century assimilation.

This month, WETA features two new music productions in the My Music series from impresario TJ Lubinsky, traveling back to a golden time of joy and romance in pop music and presenting performances by legendary stars from Broadway’s Golden Age. The archival clip special My Yearbook: 1960–1963, hosted by pop singer Bobby Vinton and actress-singer Tina Cole (of My Three Sons), explores that era’s songs of hope and heartbreak. Among artists featured in the program are Paul Anka, Ray Charles, Patsy Cline, The Everly Brothers, Shelley Fabares, Percy Faith & His Orchestra, Connie Francis. Ricky Nelson, Neil Sedaka, Del Shannon, Andy Williams and others.

In Great Broadway Musical Moments from The Ed Sullivan Show, host Shirley Jones presents rarely seen perfor-mances by an array of Broadway stars of the stage, featuring favorite songs from beloved musicals. From the late 1940s through early 1950s, The Ed Sullivan Show, based in the heart of New York’s theater district, presented special per-formances with original cast members from the most popular stage musicals of one of Broadway’s most vibrant eras. Among the performers featured are Ethel Merman, Joel Grey, Julie Andrews, John Raitt, Gwen Verdon (above), Dick Van Dyke, Richard Burton and others in songs from such classics as Oklahoma!, My Fair Lady, Annie Get Your Gun, West Side Story, Sweet Charity and Camelot.

Rick Steves’ Europe Marathon

Guidebook author and TV host Rick Steves, America’s most respected authority on European travel, appears in WETA’s television studio during a marathon of his popular series Rick Steves’ Europe this month. In these March episodes, Steves explores the Loire region of central France, makes side trips from Paris, visits the Italian Riviera, and tours Amsterdam and other locations in The Netherlands. In each area, the travel expert shares his valuable insights on art, culture and history, along with his practical, experience-enhancing trip advice. Steves advocates smart, affordable, perspective-broadening travel. He started his business, Rick Steves’ Europe, in 1976 and has since produced more than 50 guidebooks on European travel and hosted more than 100 travel shows for public television. Steves spends about a third of every year in Europe, researching guidebooks, filming TV shows, and mak-ing new discoveries for travelers. His series airs Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. on WETA TV 26.

Faith meets science in a new special featuring renowned spiritual teacher and medical doctor Deepak Chopra, as he demonstrates that the tools of advanced fields of science can be used to answer some fundamentally spiritual questions.

In The Future of God, Chopra argues that religion and science, when understood at the highest levels, do not contradict each other and, in fact, actually comple-

ment each other. He explores how people brought up in a largely secular, mate-rialistic world, without a devout connection to a religious tradition, can have a more

productive and vital life and a greater sense of well-being and happiness if they gain a more intimate and powerful connection to the divine wisdom of the ages. By combining science, history and philosophy, Chopra offers a quest into what it means to be human. A clinical endocrinologist, Chopra is also the author of more than 75 books, including many New York Times bestsellers, which have sold more than 20 million copies worldwide.

Dr. Christiane Northrup: Glorious Women Never Age!

Christiane Northrup, M.D., a leading authority in the field of women’s health and wellness, turns her attention to the subject of women and aging in a new special, Glorious Women Never Age!, taped at Boston’s Calderwood Pavilion. In the program, Northrup challenges the most common but least helpful perspectives on women’s “aging,” replacing the notion of decline and decrepitude with the profound understanding that growing older means an increase in wisdom and value. Northrup collects and interprets research and combines it with her own clinical and life experi-ence; the result is her presentation of seven steps that women should take in their journey to getting older — without aging. Among the topics explored is Dr. Ellen Langer’s landmark study on aging, which proved that how you think about your age can determine physiological factors. Northrup examines aging and American culture, the importance of proper blood-sugar levels and exercise, ageless living and much more.

The fi lm is based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Siddhartha Mukherjee. Part 1 of 3. Magic Bullets. The search for a “cure” for cancer is the greatest epic in the history of science, spanning centuries and continents. This episode follows that centuries-long search, but centers on the story of Sidney Farber, who, defying conventional wisdom in the late 1940s, introduces the modern era of chemotherapy, eventually galvanizing a “war on cancer.” Interwoven with Farber’s narrative is the contemporary story of a young girl diagnosed with leukemia. Episode 1 of 3. Dr. Holly Hedrick performs a rare procedure and at-tempts to remove a tumor from a fetus still attached to her mother. Also, two parents wait to fi nd out if they are candidates for fetal surgery to repair their baby’s spine.

9:00 CANCER: THE EMPEROR OF ALL MALADIES — The WETA co-production continues. Part 2 of 3. The Blind Men and the Elephant. This episode picks up the story in the wake of the declaration of a “war on cancer” by Richard Nixon in 1971 and the search for a cure. In the lab, rapid progress is made in understanding the essential nature of the cancer cell, leading to the revolutionary discovery of the genetic basis of cancer, but few new therapies become available. Not until the late 1990s do advances in research begin to translate into more precise targeted therapies with breakthrough drugs. A four-part drama series based on Edith Wharton’s fi nal, unfi nished 1937 novel “The Buccaneers” is set in the 1870s, telling the story of four rich and beautiful young American women who come to England during the Gilded Age and marry into the landed, but impoverished, aristocracy. Created by the BBC in partnership with the producers of Masterpiece,the lavish 1995 costume drama was adapted by screenwriter Maddie Wadey and was a success despite featuring a conclusion that some Wharton fans considered uncharacteristic of the author’s novels. The cast includes Alison Elliot, Carla Gugino, Rya Kihlstedt and at far left, Mira Sorvino (winner of the Academy Award and Golden Globe that same year for her performance in Woody Allen’s Mighty Aphrodite).

Before Inspector Morse, made famous on television by John Thaw, there was the rookie Constable Morse, learning the ropes on the Oxford force and acquiring the quirks for which he would become famous as author Colin Dexter’s iconic police detective. In the production Endeavour, created by Mammoth Screen and Masterpiece, Shaun Evans stars as young Endeavour Morse — a young sleuth with impressive deductive powers but struggling and confl icted at the outset of what would become a lifelong career.

Co-starring with Evans is Roger Allam, who portrays Morse mentor Inspector Fred Thursday. Set in 1960s Oxford, Endeavour is written by Inspector Lewis creator and Inspector Morse writer Russell Lewis. WETA UK presents the Endeavour pilot episode on March 4, followed each week in March by episodes of Series I.

Masterpiece Mystery!: SilkThursdays at 9 p.m. on WETA UK, March 12, 19 & 26

The fast-paced, three-part 2013 Masterpiece legal drama Silk follows attorneys’ lives in chambers and in the courtroom, spotlighting the rivalries, politics, passions and intrigues of lawyers practicing criminal law. Maxine Peake (Little Dorrit) is barrister Martha Costello, who is under pressure to win cases as she aspires to rise to the rank of Queen’s Counsel, also known as “taking Silk.” In an effort to boost her Silk application, Martha takes on challenging cases to prove her merit — and an ambitious student pupil (Tom Hughes). Rupert Penry-Jones (MI-5 and The 39 Steps) portrays Clive, Martha’s opposing counsel in a major case — a rival barrister in her chambers who further complicates matters. Will Martha be able to satisfy both the personal and the professional demands placed on her?

Also this month on WETA UK: The three-part series Tigers About the House, spotlighting two Sumatran tiger cubs raised at home by a zookeeper in Brisbane, Australia, airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on WETA UK, March 8, 15 and 22. Miniseries Kangaroo Dundee, which follows the life and work of a man who has dedicated his life to rescuing and raising orphan kangaroos outside the Australian city of Alice Springs, begins Sunday, March 29 at 8 p.m. on WETA UK.

Classical WETA 90.9 FMClassical for Washington

When should an all-woman piano trio be featured on Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s Monday-night, 9 p.m. broadcast, Front Row Washington? At the start of Women’s History Month, of course. Tune in on March 2 as Trio Cavatina offers works by three women composers in recital from the Barns at Wolf Trap, including Robert Schumann’s famous wife Clara Wieck Schumann, Mexico native Gabriela Ortiz Torres, and the provocative American composer Augusta Read Thomas.

The following Monday night, March 9, we literally turn the page with Cecilia Porter’s recent book “Five Lives in Music,” which profi les fi ve women across the centuries who prevailed against cultural norms to cre-ate memorable music. We present one of the fi ve, pianist Ann Schein, in recital at the National Gallery of Art. Our special program will also feature a conversation with Ms. Porter about how she chose the women for her book, and how “cultural amnesia” kept women from knowing anything about their sister-in-music predecessors.

We celebrate Bach Month on Classical WETA over two Front Row Washington broadcasts starting March 16, with the visionary cellist Matt Haimovitz performing Bach solo cello suites 4, 5, and 6 in a Dumbarton Concerts recital. For the next broadcast, we’ll hear top-notch symphony musicians who get together to present not one, but four concerts a year — for free. The National Chamber Players have performed since 2004 as resident ensemble at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia; and on March 23, Bach Month continues with the broadcast debut of this wonderful ensemble founded by National Symphony Orchestra cellist James Lee. Their December concert, recorded by Classical WETA, features two of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, numbers 3 and 6, and Vivaldi’s ever-popular “La Follia” sonata.

We close out the month on Front Row Washington on March 30 with another nod to women in music: a Phillips Collection recital by pianist Anna Bulkina. Born in Turkmenistan, Ms. Bulkina is a Young Steinway Artist and winner of the 59th Wideman Piano Competition. Her musicianship shines through in her performance of Beethoven’s E-fl at Piano Sonata no. 18, Op. 31/3 and Brahms’ knuckle-busting 28 Variations on a Theme by Paganini.

Celebrating Bach on Front Row Washington

This month on the Sunday night program Choral Showcase on Classical WETA 90.9 FM, Women’s History Month and Washington National Cathedral are in the spotlight. We focus on Women’s History Month with two major choral works conducted by women we’re proud to have working nearby. Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Music Director Marin Alsop conducts Brahms’s German Requiem on March 8. JoAnn Falletta, music director of the Virginia Symphony since 1991, conducts Mahler’s love-celebrating 8th Symphony on March 15.

The March 22 broadcast features a performance of Bach’s St. John Passion from last season at the Cathedral. In a conversation I had with Canon Michael McCarthy, Director of Music at the Cathedral and conductor of both Cathedral performances on Choral Showcase this month,

he stresses the intense drama one fi nds in the St. John Passion. “There is no moment to clear your throat,” he says. “There is no…point where you can empty your lungs and take breath again.” My chat with McCarthy about the St. John Passion is on our website, classicalweta.org, under “Classical Conversations.” This year’s performance of the St. John Passion at the Cathedral takes place on March 29, and that evening on Choral Showcase, we air last December’s performance of Handel’s oratorio Messiah at the Cathedral.

From Heaven to Hell (and in Between) on NSO Showcase

March’s NSO Showcase starts with a sneeze. No, it’s not fl u season, it’s Zoltán Kodály’s Háry János Suite. As the story begins, the Hungarian soldier, János (John), is in a pub, recounting his highly exaggerated adventures in the Napoleonic wars. His audience is enthralled except for a skeptical student, who sneezes to express his disbelief. This delightful suite taken from the opera Háry Jánoshas many high points, including the rousing battle scene where our intrepid hero describes his imaginary conquest of Napoleon.

Neeme Järvi conducts the National Symphony Orchestra in this performance recorded in November 2013 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

In March 2014, just a few months before his death in June, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos led the NSO in Rach-maninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with the guest pianist Daniil Trifonov, winner of the 2011 Interna-tional Tchaikovsky competition. In Trifonov’s Classical Conversation with WETA’s Deborah Lamberton — (weta.org/fm/features/classicalconversations) — he inter-prets the Rhapsody as a warning to artists that they should always keep their dedication to the true meaning of art and not sell their soul to the devil. During Paganini’s life-time, many believed that he was inspired by Satan, and Rachmaninoff reminds us of this by blending the theme from the last of Paganini’s 24 Caprices with the Dies Iraefrom the Requiem Mass in this devilishly diffi cult work.

Finally, the March NSO Show-case program ends on a “high” note. Christoph Eschenbach leads the

orchestra in an April 2011 performance of Mahler’s 4th symphony, the last move-

ment of which describes a child’s view of heaven. The soprano soloist is Dawn Upshaw, who

once inspired the great Robert Shaw to say: “It’s her nature to sing, just like it’s a bird’s nature. That’s why she’s here on earth.” Or, in this case, in heaven, where, as Mahler states in the last line of his symphony, “The angelic voices delight the senses, for all things awake to joy.”
