Pentecost is considered by many as thebirthday of the Christian Church.
Resurrection LifeMAY 2016
This year, we will celebrate two main feasts of the Church during the month of May.On Thursday, May 5, the Church will celebrate the Ascension of our Lord. Tendays after the Ascension, on Sunday, May 15, the Church celebrates the Feast ofPentecost, the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus had promised that he must ‘go away’ sothat the ‘Helper’ – the Holy Spirit – will come. “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth:it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will notcome to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.” John 16:7. These words of Jesusrefer both to the Ascension, his ‘going away’ and to Pentecost, the sending of theHelper, the Holy Spirit. Let me therefore share a few thoughts with you on thesignificance of these two great Feasts of the Church.
Let us begin with the Feast of the Ascension. The significance of the Ascension isvery important to our understanding of the salvation that God has worked out for usthrough Christ. The Ascension of our Lord is such an important aspect of our faiththat it is enshrined in our statement of faith, the Apostles Creed: “…..He ascendedinto heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father…...” The Ascension helpsus to understand how the Resurrection of Christ impacts our lives as the Redeemed.Christ’s bodily Ascension into heaven foreshadows our own entrance into heaven. In redeeming the human race, Christ did not only offer salvation to our souls, butHe began the restoration of the fallen world back to the glory that God intendedbefore the Fall of Adam. After our earthly pilgrimage on earth we will die, but likeChrist we will be resurrected and our bodies will be glorified. Our glorified bodieswill make their entrance into heaven to stand before the throne of God robed in ourwhite robes, washed in the blood of the Lamb, praising God and glorifying His Holyname. There He will be our God and we will be His people and he will wipe awayevery tear from our eyes and satisfy our every need. Like Christ we will die, likeChrist we will rise again, like Christ our resurrected, glorified bodies will ascendinto heaven.
Pentecost is considered by many as the birthday of the Christian Church. For itwas on the day of Pentecost that the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples andfilled them with power. That power enabled them to witness for Christ andthrough their witness many believed and turned their lives over to Christ. Thus, the Christian Church came into being. After Jesus’ crucifixion, the disciples werescared and were in hiding. They were frustrated and had little or no hope. TheHoly Spirit transformed them into bold witnesses for Christ. They had their hoperekindled and were fired up to share the story of Jesus, the source of their hope,so that others can also receive and experience that hope which is available in andthrough the redemption that is available in Christ. When we celebrate Pentecost,we are celebrating our redemption. Redemption became a reality in our livesthrough our baptism when through Christ, God named us by name, forgave oursins and made us members of His family and heirs to the inheritance of lifeeverlasting. Pentecost therefore, is not only a celebration of the redemption thatwe have received in Christ, but it is also a celebration of the power that God givesto each of the redeemed to share the Good News of redemption with others. Letus celebrate with thanksgiving our redemption and let us be fired up to share theGood News that redemption is available to all in and through Christ.
Blessings to you all.

Bumper sticker wisdom: a picture of an open Bible with the words, “When all elsefails, read the instructions.” God did not create us and then leave us on our own tofigure out how to get through life. The Bible really is a book of instructions — fromthe first page to the last.
Just as that bumper sticker subtly suggests, we frequently plow through life believingwe can do it on our own. Too often we turn to God’s Word after worry, frustration, orwhen all else has failed.
God wants us to depend on Him. He gave us His Holy Spirit to lead us intounderstanding the Bible so we can apply its message to our lives. … the HolyScriptures … have the power to give you wisdom so that you can be saved throughfaith in Christ Jesus. Every Scripture passage is inspired by God. All of them areuseful for teaching, pointing out errors, correcting people, and training them for a lifethat has God’s approval. They equip God’s servants so that they are completelyprepared to do good things (2 Timothy 3:15b-17 GOD’S WORD).
Happy Mother’s Day!
