May 27, 2018 | The Most Holy Trinity
Dear Parishioners:

In today’s gospel we hear Jesus
send the disciples forth for the
great commission: “Go, therefore,
and make disciples of all nations,
baptizing them in the name of the
Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I have
commanded you. And behold, I am with you
always, until the end of the age.”

This great commission reminds me of the month of
May at Saint Jude Parish. We had baptisms and we
also had first communions and confirmations. We
got to see the process of the great commission
unfold before our very eyes. Saint Paul in our
second reading refers to this process: “For those
who are led by the Spirit of God are sons and
daughters of God.” Paul knows that this
relationship comes from a personal relationship
with God. It comes from “communion” with God
from whence we cry out “Abba, Father!” The word
“Abba” is even more intimate than “Father,” it is a
word that Jesus used to refer to his relationship
with the Father. Jesus calls us to the same kind of
relationship, knowing that it is the root and
springboard of the great commission. Everything
that Jesus did in terms of ministry sprang forth
from his relationship with the Father.

This “communion” with God was made evident in
our first communions. Communion is the most
important gift besides baptism that we can give
our children. Psychologists are always talking about
the importance of self esteem in children. What
could possibly give a child greater self esteem than
communion with God?

In the Eucharist our children receive the most
important gift possible: the gift of knowing that they
are infinitely and unconditionally loved by God. What
greater gift could we possibly give to our children?
What greater sense of security can they have? When
our children know they are loved by God, they will
not be looking for the perfect love that only God can
give in other things. When they get older they won’t
be looking for it in bad friendships, bad relationships,
material things or controlled substances. They will be
able to say: “I don’t need all of that, because I know
that I am loved by God.” At confirmation our children
will become grounded in their faith. Confirmation is
the receiving of the Holy Spirit and the sending forth
in terms of the great commission. As adults, some will
baptize others and all of them will be called by Jesus
to give witness to their faith.

May today’s Eucharist help us to enter into a deeper
union with Jesus and to know that we are infinitely
loved. Only then will we be able to share our faith
with others, by making disciples of all nations and by
doing all that Jesus has commanded us to do.

S tewardshipOn this solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, we affirm our faith that God exists as a
Trinity Father, Son and Holy Spirit united together in love. Through baptism and faith in Jesus, we have been given a share in the divine life of the Trinity. This being the case, let us seek to live in ever greater unity with God and with one another. Blessed are we to share in the divine life of the Most Holy Trinity.

LIFE: Lifelong Intergenerational Faith & Evangelization
Trinity and Rela onship“When they all saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted.”
~ Mahew 28:17
I know I’ve shared this before, but it’s worth sharing again… in
his book, Sacred Companions, psychologist and author Dr. David
G. Benner tells the story of a friend who was not happy with his
church, but who conInued to go to services. When asked why,
he said, “...church keeps me in touch with others on the spiritual
journey. Spiritual growth is just too hard to maintain alone.”
Benner says his friend is right; we need one another. We need
the witness of those who have gone before us. We need the
companionship of those who walk with us today. Even the
disciples doubted; even aWer they had journeyed with him, and
saw the miracles, and knew him deeply, they doubted. They
needed him and one another. “Journeying together is the only
way to effect the personal transformaIon that is the goal of the
adventure... Some spiritual friends offer us help in knowing
ourselves, while others offer help in knowing God. The best
friendships offer us both.” In this way, says Benner, “InImate
relaIonships with others prepare us for inImacy with God.” The
Trinity is all about inImate relaIonship!

The stories you have shared with me, with the faith formaIon
team, have impacted me in ways words cannot convey: The
mom who talked about how hard it is to go through
sacramental preparaIon for First Eucharist with her daughter,
even though she herself cannot receive the Eucharist, being
divorced and remarried; the dad who spoke about his graItude
for a space (parent sessions) to talk about doubt, to work
through anger at the Catholic Church for past misdeeds. If we
can’t talk about it here, together, he said, then we’re talking to
neighbors, and friends on the baseball field who invite us to
leave the Church and go where they go. Even though he knows
no community is perfect, the temptaIon to leave was there.
But he wanted his kids to “have what he had.”

Then there was the mom who said she’s “done her Ime” in
CCD, but wanted her boys to have what she had. UnIl she had
and shared her “aha” moment with us. When we started
Explore 4 (our life of the parish component) she chose to aNend
StaIons of the Cross with her children. She knew no one would
ask quesIons. She knew she could be in and out in 30 minutes
or less. By the Ime they were at the Second or Third StaIon,
she said it felt like Catholic muscle memory. She had memories
of growing up and aNending every Friday during Lent with her
aunt who had since passed. When her boys looked at her funny
(she was beginning to get emoIonal) she realized they had
never once been to StaIons of the Cross. They didn’t have
“what she had”. The culture had changed. She shared her
experience in a beauIful reflecIon and we were moved. How

can we offer more opportuniIes not just to learn, but to
encounter our beauIful faith and our saving Lord? That became
our goal.

No longer are families marinated in Catholic pracIce. John
Roberto likes to tell stories about growing up in an Italian Catholic
family where the “Catholic” was in the pasta. That rarely exists
anymore. This is why parishes are partnering with parents in new
and exciIng ways (gathered, digital playlists, serving together and
more) because we need one another. Kids need to see us being
Church together. And if we’re honest we need it as much as they
do. We need to see someone’s faith when we doubt. And
someImes someone else needs to see ours
