St. Monica Parish was founded in 2013 by Bishop David

Zubik. The clergy and people of four parishes, representing

eight previous parishes, bravely accepted the call of the

Bishop to cooperate as people of faith in the power of the

Holy Spirit to Build a Church that is Alive! Christ has

asked this parish to be born so that the Faith may continue

to be proclaimed and lived in the upper Beaver Valley. The

Holy Eucharist has been praised and adored in this area

Lord’s Peace Saint Monica,

This weekend and last the capital campaign team and I have been making our final appeals for your sup-port. One year ago the vision was shared of building for the Lord a new home and a new school. The projected cost of the entire expansion of the Chippewa site is $8 million, and there is a hope to have monies left over to keep a substantial savings for the parish’s future.

Keeping this in mind the primary aim of this campaign, Building A Church Alive, is to build a parish that is alive with the truth and beauty of the Catholic faith. We cannot build God a new home if we have not first built him a home within our own hearts and households. I am proud to be the father of this family and am grateful for your sacrificial support of this parish and this campaign. In the Diocese of Pittsburgh participation in the capital campaign averaged 20%, and here we have 26% participation. Our diocesan goal of $1.4 million has been far exceeded, and every dollar pledged now stays in the parish. Our Sunday Mass attendance averages approximately 32%, showing that almost every Mass going household is presently participating in God’s future for this parish.

Saint Monica parish is already a Church Alive! Despite a building being dismantled, changes to our Mass times and locations, and the challenges of bringing 4 parishes together as 1, the parishioners of Saint Monica have responded that our mutual love of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist is more important than the struggles we endure. Currently we are working to manage our rapid growth, with record numbers in our school and new par-ish organization sprouting everywhere.

The Saint Monica Capital Campaign will come to a close on June 1, 2015. After June 1, 2015 the parish councils and I will determine based on our pledges and savings the scope of the final project to expand the Chip-pewa site. Presently there are sufficient funds between pledges and savings to build a new Church, however currently there are not sufficient funds for the entire project. We will not be taking out a mortgage for the re-mainder of the project, in part because it is our hope to share the Gospel and not to constantly be about raising money, and secondly because at this time the Diocese does not have any money for us to borrow. If you have been waiting to make a pledge or gift until the project is underway, it will be too late. Planning and building will be done based on commitments made as of the close of the Capital Campaign to ensure that we are good stew-ards of parish resources and that our parish will remain strong and viable long after our expansion is complete.

I thank the more than 600 families who have generously made sacrificial gifts. We are striving to reach 30% participation in the Capital Campaign. To reach this goal, we need less than 100 additional families to make a gift or pledge of any size to the Campaign by June 1, 2015. No gift or pledge is too small to help us reach this goal, and all gift amounts are anonymous.

As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him— you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices accept-

able to God through Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:4-5

Our parish and diocese have been built through the miracles of a good God, and by the faith and sacri-fices of many wonderful people. The miraculous hand of the Living God manifested through their hard work, dedication, and love have made possible all that we have today. Please pray for the guidance of the Holy Spirit, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother and Saint Monica, and join in the spirit of sacrifice by supporting this campaign so that we may continue to minister to the needs of our community. Jesus Christ is the living Stone, and we must build lives and homes of faith upon Him.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS

Are you interested in becoming Catholic? Have you been Baptized but never received Holy Communion

or Confirmation? RCIA is adult faith formation for those interested in becoming Catholic or for those who have not

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Dear Fellow Parishioners: The First Holy Communion Mass and the May Crowning are taking place this weekend for all parish and academy sec-ond grade students. In the words of Pope Benedict… ”God our Father has gathered us around his Son and our brother, Jesus Christ, who is present in the host conse-crated during the Mass. This is a great mystery before which we worship and we believe. Jesus, who loves us very much, is truly present in the tabernacles of all the churches around the world, in the tabernacles of the churches in your neighborhoods and in your parishes. I ask you to visit Him often to tell Him of your love for Him. “ It is very important as parents that in our homes we con-tinue to give our children the most valuable gift of all-faith. As they grow, these days and Sacraments will be very memorable to them and I am very proud to be part of the academy student’s ever growing faith and that their parents have entrusted them to us. This is a practice that Catholic and non-Catholic families alike, have been exercising for 125 years with our parish school! That last sentence is amazing, isn’t it? The week of May 10th, we will have a week long Saint Monica Catholic Academy 125th Jubilee Celebration. Please pick up a bulletin next weekend with more information about the Ju-bilee activities that will be taking place that week. This is quite a milestone and, as Father says, the miracle contin-ues. We are still accepting registrations for the 2015-2016 school year for preschool through eighth grade. Consider us for your children and grandchildren. Anyone who has any interest can call the academy office and I will personally make arrangements for you to tour the school and answer any questions that you may have. And please let me reas-sure you that there is financial aid through the diocese and our own, in house, Angel Fund tuition assistance that is available to every family. Your parish school is a superior, academic learning institution centered in a Christ based atmosphere and is available to every interest family. April 28-May 4 is National Pro-life T-shirt week. I have given a “free” jean day to all students wearing their Prolife T-shirts tomorrow. What started out as a one day event, to stand together as a pro-life witness in schools and commu-nities across the country, has turned into a weeklong event with lots of participation. Father Naugle will celebrate Chapel Liturgy on Friday for grades 3, 4, & 5 in the academy’s Oratory of the Blessed Virgin Mary. MOTHER'S DAY / FATHER'S DAY - PRO-LIFE EVENT

SAINT MONICA’S WOMEN ALIVE IN PRAYER DAY OF

RECOLLECTION May 16, 2015 in Founders Hall. The

day will begin at 9:30am with registration, coffee and

sweet rolls. It will end with Mass at 4. Our purpose is to en-

courage women to enhance and grow in wisdom and knowl-

edge of their faith. Fran Tarkett a member of the retreat

team at Saint Paul of the Cross Retreat Center will be our

presenter. Fran, is retired from Duquesne University where

she held several director positions. She has taught theology

and has been involved in parish ministry for many years.

DARLINGTON DAYS 5K

Saint Monica Catholic Academy is sponsoring this year’s Dar-lington Days 5K. The race will be held on May 30th at

8am. Runners will meet at Jack’s Service Station and will be

bussed to the starting line at Blackhawk High School. Any K-12 student can run the race for only $10. You can print a

B-I-N-G-O Please note there will be no Bingo Thursday, May 14th due to the Holy Day. Enjoy a night of Bingo each Thursday at Founders

Hall, Chippewa site. Early Birds start at 7:00pm and

Regular Games start at 7:30pm and there is also a Cov-erall game that pays a minimum of $250 up to $1,000.

Bingo on the "Cookie Jar" number can pay as much as $500. We have a "Winner Take-All” game, various 50-50 split the

pot special games and a large selection of Pull Tabs. On the

The chapel at St. Mary Cemetery is open Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:00pm. The chapel at St. Mary

Cemetery is also open most holidays. A list of holiday hours along with dates and times of current funerals is posted on

a sign located at the entrance of the chapel. Anyone wish-

ing to pray or meditate is invited to and always welcomed at the St. Mary Cemetery chapel.

ADULT NEWS

SAINT MONICA’S WOMEN ALIVE IN PRAYER

Come, join Saint Monica’s Women Alive in Prayer. There is power and enjoyment in women discussing the Bible

readings and homily from the previous Mass. We learn about Jesus, we share different books and authors. We

pray for each other and others. If you have a need or a

problem, bring it to the group. Or get to know a woman in the group and talk to her after the meeting. We will

meet the first & third Monday of the month at 7 pm in Joseph’s Room. We are of different ages and

growth in Jesus.

THE LEGION OF MARY

The Legion of Mary meetings will be held from 6 to 7/7:30 pm on Tuesdays from April 21st to May

19th in St. Joseph's Room. It will return to the normal 7 pm start time on May 26th. The Legion serves the par-

ish and larger community through the Spiritual Works of

Mercy (i.e. religious education, home bound visitation, friendly evangelization, etc). We are welcoming both Ac-

tive (attend weekly meetings and complete work assign-ments) and Auxiliary (offer daily prayers for the spiritual

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL The Adoration Chapel is located at the Chippewa site

church building, accessible from the rear parking lot. The Chapel is open continuously from Sunday 1:30pm through

ROSARY CENACLE

A Rosary Cenacle is held every Monday at the Chippewa site at 9:30am at the request of the Blessed Mother. God

wants her to have this power, but she requests our prayers to assist her. All members are invited.

CATHOLIC MEN’S FELLOWSHIP The Catholic Men’s Fellowship will be meeting the first and

third Sundays at 9am in Joseph’s Room, Chippewa.

BIBLE STUDY MEN’S GROUP Will meet in Mary’s Room, Chippewa the second and

fourth Saturday’s each month beginning at 7:15am.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MEETINGS

The Beaver Valley Council 604 of the Knights of Colum-bus meets for their monthly Planning meeting on the

2nd Monday each month at 7pm and on the 4th Monday of each month for dinner at 6pm and the

Rosary at 6:30pm followed by the meeting at 7pm. Both

meetings are held in the first classroom of Founders Hall. We invite all men of the Parish to join our ranks.

VSP - BOX TOP & LABELS FOR EDUCATION PROJECT

The VSP Box Top Project has been very successful. Each box top earns 10 cents for St. Monica’s Catholic Academy.

In addition to that project, the VSP will collect Labels for

Education. Labels are on Campbell’s soups, Post cereals, Glad storage bags, and more. The UPC must be on the

label to count. Labels earn points toward art and gym sup-plies. Please clip your box tops and labels and deposit in

SAM (SUBSTANCE ADDICTION MINISTRY)

Sam is a program of the National Catholic Council on Addic-tions, an affiliate of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.

This new ministry, being established in the Diocese of Pitts-burgh, is to offer hope, healing and reconciliation to both

the afflicted and affected. Sts. Peter & Paul, Beaver, is the host parish for SAM in our Vicariate. Please join us on the
