The anticipated call came, as I entered my home, on the afternoon of a

sunny Saturday, July 1. The message was from my beloved Norman Abramowitz’ Family. He was gone, and suddenly, the sky outside became dismal, as if even nature were ready to mesh with my tears in a salute to a superb senior, an ardent advocate, and a passionate politician. “Stormin Norman,” my “General Yamashita,” whose phone messages would often began “Lederberg, what’s new?” and ended “Take care of yourself, you hear me?” had joined Heaven’s angels, and the world, especially Tamarac, would have to move forward without his counsel and creativity.

I met my treasured associate in the mid 1980’s when I visited his office in Tamarac City Hall to seek matching funds for the Area Agency. My impressions were mixed, for this lauded leader wanted more than budgets on paper - he craved conversation commingled with historic banter about New York, the Marines, his beautiful wife Claire and yes, even at our initial encounters, his children and their offspring. The Mayor and I became Brother and Sister, way back when.

Norman was elected to the Senior Hall of Fame in 1992, received an appointment by then-President Bill Clinton to the Policy Committee for the 1995 White House Conference on Aging, and continued to merit accolades politically, as well as socially, here, there, and everywhere his presence was felt. The Commissioner, Mayor, and above all, Family Patriarch, had the unique charm to be enticing, coupled with the strongly

evident leadership to merit respect on all levels, from every segment of society.

Even when terminal illness overcame his being, Norman Abramowitz refused

to surrender. He appeared at the May 23rd Annual Broward Senior Hall of Fame Breakfast, simply because the “General” promised me he’d attend. With Claire at his side and pride in his words, my long time Advisor greeted the multitude who came to his table just to share their sentiments, seek

his opinion, and/or demonstrate their respect.

During the month of June, I spoke to Mayor Abramowitz several times a week, and became painfully aware of the

sadness in Claire’s words. I knew that time was no longer our ally, and the great voice soon would be stilled forever.

Yet strangely, as I sit in my living room, very early on the morning of Sunday, July 2, and watch a summer storm obliterate the sun’s rising to kiss the day, I sense “General Yamashita’s” message, clearly in my mind and heart. “Take care of yourself, you hear?”

I will heed your message, Norman Abramowitz, for now, with you and Mayor Vicki Coceano both in Heaven, the real heroes of humanity have turned another indelible page in history. Your legacy will reside permanently in the minds, hearts, and deeds of those who follow, now and forever. Semper Fi, until you died.

TIME RECORDS LIFE’S MEMORIES AND PASSAGES

The Summer months carry the customary waves of heat and

presence of rainstorms to which we have become accustomed. The knowledge that hurricane season is our constant companion creates an acute awareness among the Board and Staff that we must prepare for the potential, as well as be ready to react immediately if warnings are broadcast by the media and shared by the network of responders who stand on guard to the disastrous blows nature can reap upon humanity.

We are proud of our Staff, the Projects, the County, and Municipalities, along with all others who accept their role as responders in the aftermath of destruction. Mid August has come and gone without incident, but the season merits and will continue to receive our respect.

Our new “Home,” located at 5300 N. Hiatus Road in Sunrise, is nearing completion! The Building is beautiful, accessible, and accommodating to the needs of Broward’s Aging and Disability Resource Center, especially the Elder Helpline which will be our greatest strength toward assuring the availability of “one-stop shopping” and a “no wrong door” entrance to the computerized would of senior services and problem solving.

Construction should be complete prior to the year’s closure, and a long time dream will metamorphosise from the selection of a brush laden site into the realization of a beautifully furnished campus. Many minds, hands, abilities, and hearts have blended to produce a recipe for success that has strengthened, and continues to reinforce our foundation.

During over 32 years of our presence in Broward County, we have encountered challenges, upsets, and victories. The beneficiaries of our existence always have been Older Americans who seek to live their retirement years with merited dignity. Changes in methodologies of doing business are inevitable, but without sufficient resources to effect alterations, we cannot successfully arrive at the goalline and team to achieve victories for Older Americans.
