90 Days to aNew You Spotlight

We kicked off thenew year with afitness challengetitled “90 Days to aNew You” in hopesthat this programwould help our

residents start a new, healthy lifestyle.Of the 56 who started the program inJanuary, one participant, Alicia Dryja, stood out.

She was so scared of weighing inat the beginning of the challenge andletting other people know her weight. She spent a lot of time debating on

whether or not she was actually goingto go through with it. She did, and herresults have been phenomenal.

According to Alicia, her biggestmotivation was her health. At the startof the challenge, she couldn’t walk upthe stairs in her home without gettingwinded. Her daily routine was a verylazy one—she usually slept late, snacked through the day, & lay on thecouch watching TV. Now Alicia jogsand exercises as much as possibleand finds as many reasons as she canto go upstairs to get in a little extraexercise. Alicia’s advice to thosewanting to make a healthy lifestylechange would be to just stick with it.

Alicia has lost a total of 45.1pounds (20.49% body weight)!Barksdale Family Housing is veryproud of her and the accomplishmentsshe has made through this journey. We hope she can encourage you tomake healthier choices!

Keep Out of HotWater—Literally

When getting into a shower orbath, we aren’t likely to imagine weare facing the risk of serious injury. However, each year about 3,800injuries occur at home due to scaldingfrom excessively hot tap water. “Mosthot water burns happen to childrenunder 5 and older adults,” says JillFuller, vice president of sales forAmerican Valves.

You can take some simple steps toensure your safety and that of yourloved ones. Replace a regularshowerhead and tub spout with onesdesigned to block scalding water.

When water reaches an unsafetemperature, these specially createddevices quickly reduce the water flowto a trickle; when water in the linecools, the flow restarts automatically.

Follow this advice to help reducethe risk of scald injuries in your home:

• Set your water heater to 120° For cooler (just below mediumsetting).

• Test the water before steppinginto the tub or shower.

• Keep children away from thestove when you are cooking.

• Turn pot handles toward theback of the stove.

• Treat a minor burn injuryimmediately with cool runningwater for three to five minutes.Do not apply ice, lotionsor butter.

The Great Egg Hunt 2013

These polite young ladies waited very patiently at thestarting line at the Great Egg Hunt.

Who could resist cuddling with these soft bunnies?!

Some of the eggs were hidden in piles of colorfulgrass; they were a lot of fun to dig out!
