The 2017 Y.E.S. project will be held at Ottawa Elementary School, beginning Thursday, June 8, at 5:30 p.m. Current 8th grade students through graduating seniors are encouraged to join us for this weekend service retreat. Be ready to meet teens from the St. George Deanery, have some fun, grow in faith and be the hands and feet of Christ in your community. Something new this year will include the availability of the YMCA and entertainment on Friday! This three day retreat experience will close with 5:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, June 10, at Ottawa Sts. Peter & Paul Parish. Registration forms are available from Jill Zeller, and are due by May 26! So, bring your friends and help us meet our goal and be part of the fun!

Y.E.S. Work Sites Needed for June 9-10

The teens & adults from the St. George Deanery are volun-teering to help people throughout Putnam County with vari-ous jobs around their homes, as they participate in the annual Youth Elect Service weekend retreat. From the Desk of Fr. Mark Hi, everyone, especially all you Mothers out there. Happy Mother's Day. Mother's Day gives all of us a chance to look at being nurtured and being thankful to all those who have "mothered" us over the years. Mother's Day also challenges us to see how we are doing in being caring to others. Although my Mom has been with God for 29 years, I think of her often. She often still inspires me to give a second chance to someone and getting over disagreements and to give a second thought to the underdog. Those are just two charac-teristics which stand out about Mom. First, giving a second chance and getting over things. My Mom was a worker. Mom and Dad raised the family on a small farm. There was no second income and little excess for luxuries. There was a lot of labor to raising and feeding a family. We were always doing something which involved having enough food for the year. Mom was in charge of dividing jobs for us kids. As a family, we picked and shelled peas. We planted, hoed, hilled and harvested lots of potatoes for a whole year. We picked and canned lots of fruit, especially cherries. As kids, we purposely left a few pits in to have a little surprise when we ate Mom's delicious cherry pie. We butchered 900 chickens one summer. There was little time to sit and stew over a squabble among us kids. We had to get back to work as a family. So that brother that you just had a knock down fight with was the brother you had to hoe with later in the day. It was also the brother who would be your teammate, after milking, in a good game of softball in the front yard. Mom always seemed to put the right kid with the right job. You weren't allowed to stay divided for too long. There was a family to raise and work to be done. I'm not sure why Mom always had a heart for the under-dog, but you could always tell she did. Maybe it was the mother in her. She always made sure the youngest had a place on the softball team in the front yard. In seating at the dinner table, the youngest always sat closest to Mom. That way she could make sure that the youngest would get some potatoes before my brother Dick would scrape the bowl. The runt pig would make its way to the house to warm up to give it a little extra boost to have the best possible chance at life. Still today when our family gathers, we point out how Mom didn't have prejudices against race, creed or any-one. And if anyone needed a little help in catching up, you might have to slow down for them to be part of the bigger family. What are some of your favorite "Mom" stories on this Mother's Day? What did your mom teach you? My Mom taught all of our family to pray as we knelt by Mom as she sat in the kitchen on a red chair (could you tell that that image is burned into my memory?) But I think, just as importantly, Mom showed us how to live out Christianity. Thanks to all moms who show us the face of God. Have a great day, every-one, especially you moms. Fr. Mark

Mass in Honor of St. Isidore

Over the past years, we have had a Farmer's Mass at the site of the old St. Isidore's Church, in Cuba. We will again, weather permitting, have a Mass outdoors, under the trees. Traditionally, Mass was held on Thursday eve-nings. We will continue that tradition with Mass at 7:30 p.m., on Thursday, May 18. Come join us for Mass for farmers. Refreshments to follow. There will still be a Mass at St. Mi-chael’s at 7:30 p.m., in addition to the outdoor Mass at Cuba.
