Personal experiences of health and illness

Many people with who are offered ECT can feel anxious or concerned: What will it be like? How can I prepare myself?

Would you like to take part in research into the experiences of service users and carers of being offered ECT (Electroconvulsive Therapy) and the development of a new Internet resource for service users, carers, and the public and health professionals?

www.healthtalkonline.org is an award winning website that will answer questions like these by providing access to the experiences of others who have faced the same concerns. On the website you can watch video clips, listen to the voices or read the accounts of people relating their experiences of being offered ECT - themselves or having a friend or family member who was offered ECT - what it involved and how it affected them.

Taking part in the project would involve being interviewed about your experiences of being offered ECT (including if you refused it) about what has happened to you or your friend/family member, what your thoughts and feelings have been at different stages, how you have got information, how you have made decisions and what have been the good and bad parts of the experience. Health professionals can also learn from your story and use it to think how they can improve the way that they interact with patients.

About Carers Together

Carers Together is an exciting new volunteering project, funded by the Big Lottery Fund and delivered by

TimeBank and Carers UK. The project offers face-to-face mentoring to 70 carers in Birmingham, plus tailored

online support to 300 carers across the country. It aims to reduce social isolation, improve emotional well-

being and help carers cope with the stress and strains of caring.

How does it work?

Drawing on its extensive experience of volunteer mentoring, TimeBank recruits, trains and supports

volunteers who have current or previous caring experience and who would like to act as mentors to other

carers. Mentors are able to share their own experience and techniques that have helped them. We offer

face-to-face and online mentoring. Carers are matched with a volunteer mentor to help them take a fresh

look at their own situations and identify goals .Mentoring enables carers to work through the difficulties they

may be experiencing and receive support, as well as signposting to other sources of help.

What is involved?

Volunteer mentors in Birmingham will meet with carers for around five hours a month over a period of 6-12

months. Online volunteers should be available to give around three hours’ support over two months. This is

available through a dedicated - and completely secure - web-based messaging site.

Getting Started Carers Together is a new project and is in the process of getting up and running. We are now taking

telephone and written referrals for volunteers and beneficiaries. We take both self and professional referrals.

We can be contacted on 0121 236 2531, or by sending the referral form to Carers Together, Timebank , 10

Water Street, Birmingham, B3 1HL. In addition we accept mentors and beneficiaries through our website at

Have you or someone you know been a victim of a hate crime or hate incident?

Hate crimes and incidents come in many different forms. It can be because of hatred on the

grounds of your race, religion, sexual orientation, transgender identity or disability.

Hate crime in any form is wrong. That is why it is important that if hate crime happens to you or

someone you know, that you report it.

True Vision is here to give you information about hate crime or incidents and how to report it.

www.report-it.org.uk

On this website, you can:

• Find out what hate crimes or hate incidents are. • Find out about the ways you can report them. • Report using the online form. • Find information about people that can help and support you if you have been a

victim.

Reporting makes a difference – to you, your friends, and your community. By reporting hate

crime when it happens, you can help stop it happening to someone else. You will also help the
