Shavuot is the Hebrew word for “weeks” and refers to the Jewish festival marking the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, which occurs seven weeks after Passover. Shavuot, like many other Jewish holidays, began as an ancient agricultural festival that marked the end of the spring barley harvest and the beginning of the summer wheat harvest. In ancient times, Shavuot was a pilgrimage festival during which Israelites brought crop offerings to the Temple in Jerusalem. Today, it is a celebration of Torah,
education, and actively choosing to participate in Jewish life. For more information about the holiday, recipes, kids crafts, and more please visit reformjudaism.org/jewish-holidays/shavuot

from the Rabbi:
Steven Engel
In the month of June, we will celebrate the holiday of Shavuot (The Feast of Weeks). It is the lesser known of the three pilgrimage
festivals, (the others being Passover and Sukkot) when our ancestors would make their way to Jerusalem to offer up something of value to show their appreciation. Later, the holiday became associated with the day that our people received the Torah at Mount Sinai. Judaism asks us to bring our best selves to the places most important in our own lives and to do it guided by the ethical and moral teachings of The Torah. We are to bring our best to our families, to our relationships, to our vocations, to our interests and to our communities. But before we can bring it, we must produce it. How do we create a best self? Truth be told, this is what Judaism is all about. Creating a best self so we use that best self to make a difference in bettering the world. Judaism teaches that building a best self begins with being honest about our strengths and weakness, then with a desire to improve oneself, and then finally doing that work through study and through prayer. Through study we question and argue within ourselves, with others and with God. This leads us to question such as: What do we really believe? What do we stand for? What is important to us in life? How do we make a difference and leave a legacy in the world? Prayer, on the other hand, can create an opening for self-reflection, help us to think about what we want the world to be, and understand our responsibility in making that happen. Through study and prayer, we can find answers to life’s most important questions. We can be given a measuring stick against which we can measure what is a “best self.” My hope and prayer for all of us in this season is that we actively seek out and take advantage of all the opportunities at Congregation of Reform Judaism and elsewhere to expand our minds, our thinking, our perspectives, our hearts and our spirits. To grow to our full human potential is what Judaism is all about. And as we are taught “Only the one who knocks will succeed” (M. Ben Ezra). Therefore, I look forward to answering the door to my office and the synagogue for you in the coming months. Wish you a fulfilling, safe and enjoyable summer.
CRJ’s Spring Event, Cirque du CRJ, honoring Emily and Marty Glickstein on April 13, 2019, was an amazing evening of fun, food and entertainment. Thank you to Carole Adler as Chair and the entire planning committee that made the night so
spectacular. And thank you to the sponsors and all who attended (I should note a record-breaking crowd) for their support of our synagogue, which made this event a great success. You may notice I did not refer to this as a “fundraiser”. This was really an opportunity for all of you to honor two wonderful congregants. Finally, thank you to Emily and Marty who so graciously accepted this honor. They truly embody the best of CRJ through their commitment of valuable time, energy, and resources to CRJ and serve as an inspiration and role model for all our congregants. I recently attended URJ’s Scheidt Seminar in Atlanta, which is an intensive four-day training program for Temple Presidents. This gave me the opportunity to exchange ideas and possible solutions with temple presidents from around the country, as well as professional staff from URJ headquarters. Perhaps most interesting (but not surprising) was the fact that CRJ is not unique and does not stand alone in addressing the synagogue’s place in these changing times. Like us, many are facing financial and membership challenges, how to connect with our greater community, how to be relevant to Jews in today’s world, and how to sustain and maintain our presence in Orlando as the most welcoming and engaging synagogue. I learned solutions are not always easy, but that the best way to prosper is through change and innovation. Change is simply an opportunity to improve on the important work that we are doing and to enhance our goal for Tikkun Olam. As you already know, we have a Task Force looking at the long-term sustainability of the synagogue. The Task Force has been working incredibly hard to develop a future vision for our congregation. Its recommendations will soon be presented to your Board and the Board is the body with the authority to determine how we should best proceed. Of course, serving our congregants is the touchstone of any process. Once potential pathways are identified all of you will be informed and become part of the process. Will everyone agree? Probably not…. Thus, the old saying that when you get three rabbis in a room you end up with 6 opinions. But you can be assured that the Task Force members and the Board have the best interests of CRJ in mind to ensure the sustainability of CRJ, the center of our Jewish life and our connection to faith, family and friends. To-vim hash-na-yim min-haw-e-chad…. Two people are better than one. A group of people working together create a partnership that is stronger and better than one working alone. Let us do our sacred work together.

from the Director of Education:
Choose yourself a teacher; acquire yourself a friend; and make it your habit to judge every person favorably. (Pirkei Avot 1:6) As Shavuot approaches, we are reminded of the giving of the Torah
at Mount Sinai. Our ancestors who came before us form the links in a chain that connects us to the traditions and the experiences of all who stood at Sinai to receive the words of Torah and the commandments of God. On Shavuot we receive Torah into our lives and then take it in to our hearts. Our students study Torah in an effort not only to learn about our traditions, but to be always evolving as human beings who are seeking to make our world a better place. We learn in the Book of Deuteronomy that, “The matter is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart to do it.” (Deut. 30:14) We help our students to find relevancy and meaning in today’s culture. These thoughts guide me to reflect on this school year as summer approaches. To me, the above words from Pirkei Avot encapsulate the philosophy of The Steinmetz Family School of Chai. In continuing the chain of tradition, the importance of developing solid relationships with teachers and friends ensures that our partnership continues to grow stronger. Together we work to contribute creatively in the active pursuit of the continuity of Judaism. As we are all made in God’s image, we are mutual partners in being
teachers and being students. Opening ourselves to the endless possibilities of who each of us is makes our school such a wonderful place to be! It is hard to believe that the school year is ending! I feel a great sense of joy and pride in sharing some of the awesome highlights of this year. Throughout the course of the year, we have been fortunate to have more than 100 students in grades PK through 6th. Additionally, our faculty of 17 teachers and 23 madrichim continually help to enrich the lives of our students. Each grade not only led the congregation in a Shabbat service, but also shared in a day of family learning in grade level Mishpacha Days. We are most excited this year in the ways that we have met the needs of our students and their families. Hebrew Help class with Dr. Zena Sulkes has served to bring students who were behind in their Hebrew reading skills to feel greater confidence in their abilities. Brand new this year, our Zoom online Hebrew classes have greatly helped families who were unable to come to the campus on Wednesdays. Students met weekly in small grade-level groups with Morah Audrey Hochstetter via a web-based platform in order to keep up with their Hebrew and prayer studies. It is wonderful to hear the positive feedback from our families who have participated in this option and to see the improvement in the levels of reading. The addition of iPads in our classrooms has significantly increased our methods for teaching and learning. Hebrew and Judaic apps, teacher-made games on platforms such as Kahoot, and the ability to project the latest curriculum on the white boards has significantly improved our

It’s been a wonderful start to mini-mester 3! The teens are really enjoying their new electives which include the
Jewish Role Models Musical Theatre Project with Cantor Jacqueline Rawiszer, Krav Maga with Gabriel Mora and Renee Rose, and a repeat (but with different participants) of Beyond Bagels with Judith Lazev. The musical theatre project focuses on the inspirations of Jewish role models for each individual teen whether it may be an actor who defended against anti-Semitism, an athlete, writer, a Jewish politician, or even a biblical leader. Participants create songs, stories, and monologues based upon important Jewish role models and present them. Krav Maga is a Jewish-style of mixed martial arts that has become very popular this day in age. We are very grateful to have expert instructors Gabriel Mora and Renee Rose join our Yala program by leading participants in this hands-on learning experience featuring self-defense techniques. Of course, Beyond Bagels also continues to be a “hit” for our Yala teens. In mid-March, it was also a real treat and honor to have psychotherapist, Dr. Roberta Marowitz, lead a session with our teens. The session was very engaging and seemed to be very meaningful for those in attendance. Also, in March, a special field trip took place for our 7th grade CHARMS class to the Beth Shalom Memorial Chapel. They met with CRJ past executive director and current member, Sammy Goldstein, for an introduction and tour of the memorial chapel which proved to be both a great educational and spiritual experience. Now that May is here, we are only a few weeks away from the Confirmation of our 12th graders on May 17 and our closing Yala banquet on May 20. Both events will be very exciting and mark a time of transition. As we say, “Yala”, let’s go forward onto the journey ahead and bring with us the meaningful memories and connections that we have had this year with Yala and CRJ. I wish everyone a fantastic rest of the mini-mester and look forward to many more wonderful times ahead! Cantor Lance

We are family. I got all my sisters with me.”On March 24th, 2019 your Sisterhood hosted the Women of Reform Judaism Southeast District area day at CRJ. Sisters from as far away as Tampa, Jacksonville, and Tallahassee were in attendance to network and make new friends all while learning about new programs, participating in workshops, performing Mitzvah projects, and enjoying a continental breakfast and delicious lunch. Spearheaded by Barbara Zaslofsky, pounds of toiletries were collected to benefit Harbor House, a woman’s shelter. Thank you to our very own Rebekah Barkowitz for being part of the WRJSE District organizing committee and for leading an inspiring breakout session on leadership. Thank you also to Cantor Jacki for the musical programs including a surprise performance from HaZamir members at the end of our day. Big thanks to Helene Becker for such a great job with the food! Interested in a night out at the theater with friends? Then join us on Thursday, May 16th at the Garden Theatre in Winter Garden for a performance of Billy Elliot: The Musical which won 10 Tony Awards and features a score by the legendary Sir Elton John. General admission tickets are $32.00 with $27.00 for seniors, and you can register through the CRJ website. This is the time of the year where we start planning our Sisterhood Shabbat service, held on June 14th at 7:00PM. All Sisterhood members are invited to participate so if you’re interested please let us know. It is during this service that the installation of the 2019 – 2020 slate of officers will take place and kudos to Carolyn Weinstein and her nominating committee for working hard to create a great Sisterhood board for the coming year. Please remember your Sisterhood board meets the second Tuesday of each month at CRJ at 5:30PM. Meetings are open to all members and we’d love to see you there. Jean White and Allison Levie

Many thanks to our teachers whose dedication and love of our students is unparalleled. I am most grateful to our madrichim, teen assistants, who are such wonderful role models to our students. There is nothing better than the willingness of teens to give back to the school where they grew up! My heart-felt thanks to all of you who bring your children to us as partners in your child’s Jewish journey. I am most grateful! May the words of Torah always be sweet in our mouths.
