On Easter Sunday as part of the sermon, I quoted two of John Updike’s writings. A number of you asked me about them, so I thought I would reproduce them here. They bear repeating during this Easter season.

Make no mistake: if He rose at all it was as His body;if the cells’ dissolution did not reverse, the moleculesreknit, the amino acids rekindle, the Church will fall.

It was not as the flowers, each soft Spring recurrent;it was not as His Spirit in the mouths and fuddledeyes of the eleven apostles;it was as His Flesh: ours.

The same hinged thumbs and toes, the same valved heart that — pierced — died, withered, paused, and thenregathered out of enduring Might new strength to en-close.

Let us not mock God with metaphor, analogy, sidestepping transcendence;making of the event a par-able, a sign painted in thefaded credulity of earlier ages: let us walk through the door.

The stone is rolled back, not papier-mache, not a stone in a story, but the vast rock of material-ity that in the slow grinding of time will eclipse for each of us the wide light of day.

And if we will have an angel at the tomb, make it a real angel, weighty with Max Planck’s quanta, vivid with hair, opaque in the dawn light, robed in real linenspun on a definite loom.

Let us not seek to make it less monstrous, for our own convenience, our own sense of beauty, lest, awakened in one unthinkable hour, we areembarrassed by the miracle, and crushed by remonstrance.—John Updike (1932-2009)

During these fifty days of Easter, I hope those verses speak as loudly to you as they do to me

A Starlit Dinner & Movie on the Lawn - Fel-lowship for Family & Friends – 7:00 PM Friday, May 20th! Bring your family and invite friends for fellowship on the Christ Church lawn under the beautiful trees and stars on Friday, May 20th! The critically acclaimed film Up, ap-pealing to all ages, will be shown outside on the lawn on an outdoor movie screen. The film centers on an elderly balloon vendor named Carl Fredricksen, played by famous Ed Asner, and an earnest, young Wilderness Explorer named Russell who fly to South America by float-ing in Carl’s house where he lived all his life with his beloved wife who has just died. We will grill hot dogs and hamburgers start-ing at 7:00 PM. At 7:30 PM, bring 50 cents for the ice cream truck, and your pocket change for a noisy offering benefitting the Good Samaritan Center for Camp Capers. Please bring your blankets, pillows and lawn chairs! This is a wonderful opportunity for all ages of our congregation to share in fellowship, so if you cannot watch the movie, please consider joining us just for dinner! Please RSVP to Pat at the church office by May 18. To volunteer or make a contribution to this event, please contact Laura Nell Bur-ton at [email protected], 219-1930 or Amy Case at [email protected], 723-6350.

Orphans and WidowsWhy Me Lord?

In the Bible, I think we could say that there are a lot of righteous people who at some point have asked or thought, “Why me Lord?” How about Noah, sweat-ing day after day working on a huge boat on dry land with no sign of rain in sight. Then there is Abraham, with a knife in his hand, looking at his be-loved son, Isaac. What about Mo-ses plead-ing with Pharoah, David run-ning from Saul, and Es-ther daring to go before the King? And let’s not forget the prophets Jeremiah and Jonah! So, when we wonder “why me Lord,” at least we are in good company! Hope-fully that is encouraging!

I believe that when we are considering a ministry or in a ministry there are always moments when we “wonder about what we are doing.” I liken it to the image of the good Angel on one of my shoulders and the “not so good” angel on my other shoulder, both whispering in my ears what to do. I find this verse helpful, “But when

you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.” Matthew 6:2-4.

One ministry I have been called to work with is the or-phans at St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. At the four major children homes in San Anto-nio there are about 200 boys and girls, mostly between the ages of 6 and 17, who live in small group environments

without their par-ents to nurture and help them along. Most of us have heard of St. Peter/St. Joseph’s or Boysville, but St. Jude’s Ranch has also been in operation for as

long as I can remember. St. Jude’s is slightly out in the country (Bulverde) and a little smaller, which is a nice environment for the kids. There are usually 6-8 girls or boys in each cottage at St. Jude’s Ranch.

If you feel God calling you to serve these kids, here are some things that can be done at St. Jude’s Ranch (or most any Childrens’ Home):• Help occasionally with the Sunday 6-7 pm service (it happens once a month at St. Jude’s in their chapel).• Go to St. Jude’s and do arts, crafts, your hobby or games with the kids on the weekend for an hour or so.• Pray for the children, counselors and administra-tion – we have the prayer requests we receive at each Sunday service.• Bring food to cook a meal with the kids at one of their cottages, on the week-end.• Invite a cottage to meet you at the zoo, movie, a play, a musical event, a Fi-esta parade, the rodeo, putt-putt golf, a Missions game, etc. The counselor for the cottage will come and super-vise.• Help finance one of the above activities if you can’t go.

Page 5: May Message 2011

I do wonder sometimes why I should do anything for someone else’s kids or for an adult in need. I have my own life, problems and family to deal with. But I also hear the good angel tugging at my heart.

No matter where we serve, God will make it rewarding. It’s especially nice, for example, when one of the children (or an adult) comes up and gives you a big hug just for being there!

Here is a prayer request received a few weeks ago by one of the children at St. Jude’s: “Please pray for me. My mom might loose her rights. We have another court date for June. I hope we are adopted by a loving Christian family that will accept us like we are. Aren’t Christians supposed to be non-judgmental, right? We also might be moved to a foster house. Why? This place is not a home looking environment, but that’s all. Please pray.”

Wednesday, June 15: Facing The GiantsNever give up. Never back down. Never lose faith. Facing The Giants is the heart-warming story of a downtrodden Christian high school football coach who turns to God when everything seems to be going against him. Trusting God to do the impossible, Coach Grant Taylor and his Shiloh Chris-tian Eagles soon discover how faith plays out on the field … and off. Wednesday, July 20: Antwone Fisher (for adults) &Charlotte’s Web (shown in the FMC building for children)Directed by and starring Denzel Washington, Antwone Fisher is the story of a young navy man who is forced to see a psy-chiatrist after a violent outburst against a fellow crewman. During the course of treatment, a painful past is revealed and a new hope begins.

activities, games, and fellow-ship as you learn about God’s Word and how to apply it. We will be using “Hands On Bible” cur-riculum for children’s Sunday School this summer for both preschool and elementary classes. “Hands on Bible” curriculum is designed to help children learn and ap-ply God’s Word through fun games and activities. It’s per-fect for summer! Pockets the Kangaroo Puppet helps teach the preschoolers each Sun-day. The kids LOVE her! Fun games, gadgets, and gizmos keep the elementary age children involved and happy. Detailed lesson plans that are easy to follow and give the teacher plenty to do with the children make teach-ing possible for all. We ask that parents and all parishioners who love kids sign up to teach one Sunday, a month of Sundays, or all summer if desired. Sign ups to teach are located in the Tomlin Room on the first

Come Share A Story!Summer Children’s Chapel: June 5 – August 21Favorite Stories and Bible Teachings Over the past 25 years as a Children’s Min-ister, I have collected many beautiful story books with spiritual and biblical messages. I want to share many of these with the chil-dren in Chapel this summer. You may have a favorite story with spiritual significance you would like to share, too. I encourage you to join me in Summer Chapel – a perfect setting for this casual time of sharing. To my Christ Church Family,

I am Amy Case and I am the co-director of the Christ Church/St. Mark’s Vacation Bible School. VBS is sched-uled for June 20-24 and we have an exciting new theme – Hometown Nazareth – Where Jesus Was a Kid. This summer, Christ Church and St. Mark’s will host approxi-mately 120 children, ages 3-11, on an exciting Bible adventure. The kids will have an engaging journey through scripture with activities such as carpentry, bead-making, fabric-dying, and seed-plant-ing. The kids will visit with Jesus’ mother, Mary, to learn exciting behind-the-scenes stories of our Savior’s child-hood; they will be moving and laughing with games that make them feel like part of ancient Nazareth; and they’ll even create art mas-terpieces with Jesus’ grand-mother!

Our five day VBS program is about fourteen hours of en-gaging, child-centered Bible

instruction -- more ministry than many children receive in an entire year. This is a wonderful opportunity for Christ Church to reach out to not only our own wonderful families, but also the kids from the Good Sa-

maritan center, the Thunder-bird Apartments, kids from other churches, and many children who do not attend church. Personally, one of the times when I feel the presence of the Holy Spirit most distinctly is when I am with children. The joy I feel at watching kids discover, proclaim and celebrate their faith cannot be described in words.

M I N I S T r y

Vacation bible School 2011With less than two months to go, we already have over 75 children registered and more than 25 adults volunteering. In order to give these kids an unforgettable experience, we need your help. Online adult and teen volunteer forms and child registration forms are available at cecsa.org/children. Paper forms are available in the lobby of the Family Ministry Cen-ter. Fill one out yourself or pass one along to a friend, relative or neighbor. All are welcome and needed and will be blessed at our Hometown Nazareth VBS! Thank you!!

In Christ,Amy
