Each Mayan city was ruled by a noble family. Each family was supposed to have descended from the “Hero Twins”. The “Hero Twins” were direct descendants from the gods. Succession was based over child to child. If no children had been born war would erupt.

The Maya spent a lot of time on personal appearance, bathing often and covering their bodies with tattoos and piercings. Jewelry and embroidery were popular. Head dresses were most important to the Mayans.

If you stole and were caught your victim would have you as a captive. If you committed a lesser crime your hair would be cut short, which was a sign of disgrace.

HOW THE MAYANS WERE LIKE THE ANCIENT GREEKS
Ancient Mayans, like the Ancient Greeks, had many cities that were independent, intertwined, and spoke one language. Each empire worshiped the gods they had created in every city under their rule. Both empires made laws and everyone followed those rules.

HOW THE MAYANS WERE UNLIKE THE ANCIENT GREEKS
Unlike the Greeks, the Mayans built many roads to connect each city with other cities. Archeologists believe once Mayan civilization had hundreds of cities. Each Mayan city had a palace, some temples, a ball court, and a market place.
