Mayfield East Public School 32 Crebert Street MAYFIELD NSW 2304 P: 02 4968 1495 E: [email protected] Principals Message Here we are at Week 10, Term 3! My goodness how the year is just flying! One thing which has really reinforced this has been the pre-Kindergartens coming along to 'Big School For Little Kids' over the past few weeks. It doesn't seem that long ago that our current Kinders joined our MEPS family and here we are welcoming the 2019 Kinders! We already have a lot of children enrolled in Kindergarten for next year. However we are still accepting enrolments for students who live in our catchment zone. So if you know of any families who have not yet enrolled please direct them to our lovely office staff. I'm also happy to conduct school tours for new families. Conversely if you know that your family may be moving to another school in 2019 please let us know as soon as possible. It helps us to plan not only for future staffing needs but also in supporting student transition to another school. We are very fortunate to have a drop-off/pick-up zone outside our school. This is not just for parent convenience, it is primarily for student safety. I have noticed some very unsafe actions in recent days where parents have double-parked and called students to move out onto the road to jump in the car rather than pulling up at the kerb. I've also seen students encouraged to get in or out from the road side. As a parent I know how incredibly busy we can get and how pressed for time we can be especially in the afternoons with after-school activities and appointments to get to. It would be preferable to be a minute or two late than have a child injured or killed. So please follow the rules and pull into the kerb before asking your child to get in. Please encourage them to climb in on the kerbside not the road-side. Principal’s Message Here we are at Week 10, Term 3! On another note please be aware that the Fronditha carpark is private property. Also be mindful of the tiny Swainson St just near our school. The residents in that street are very patient and supportive of our school community, however they are becoming increasingly frustrated by parents and carers parking across their driveways or blocking the street as it's quite narrow and not suitable for parking. Our wonderfully talented keyboard and piano students performed in the school hall for an audience yesterday afternoon. We have such talent here at Mayfield East across all areas of the Creative Arts. Well done to all the students who took part. We are very proud of you - your hard work and continual practice is paying off! This month’s P&C meeting will be held on 25th September from 6-7.30pm in the Staffroom. There will be a babysitter if you need to bring your children with you. Our P&C is very supportive and friendly - definitely the friendliest that I've been a part of! I will be attending as usual to give my Principal's Report and Mrs Horgan will be giving a very short presentation on what our Student Parliament is all about. The P&C is a great place to meet like-minded parents and friends of the school so come along, we would love to see you there! There will be a short information session on the upcoming Year 4 and Year 5/6 camps this Wednesday 26th September between 4.30-5pm. Mrs Horgan and Mrs Hipwell will be talking about procedures on the day, the itinerary, packing lists and our expectations for student behaviour during camp among other things. Congratulations to our wonderful canteen ladies, Kirsty and Kallie! We have received confirmation that our school meets the NSW Healthy Canteen Strategy. We also received a letter of congratulations, a certificate and a Healthy School Canteen Website Badge. To further help our children make healthier choices the sale of 'Occasional Foods' such as pies and sausage rolls will be limited to Monday/Wednesday/Friday only. Did you know that other foods such as mini-pizzas and chicken burgers are all made with fresh ingredients by our canteen staff?! The chicken schnitzels are made from scratch using real chicken breast which is crumbed and baked in the oven. The mini pizzas are made from fresh dough prepared in the canteen with fresh ingredients. I know that our students are very lucky yet again to have sushi on offer this term which is wonderfully healthy. If you have some time to spare to help out in the canteen – even an hour would be useful – please see Kallie or Kirsty at the canteen or call our office and we will pass on your details. Many schools don’t have a fulltime canteen and certainly I’ve never been to a school where such a high percentage of the menu items are made on-site with fresh food. We are so very lucky and I’d like to thank our wonderful canteen staff and helpers for providing us with such a quality service. Save the date! Next term on Thursday 25th October (Week 2) in conjunction with the P&C we'll be firing up the pizza oven and holding a home-made pizza and movie night to bring our community together as an end of year celebration. More details to come very shortly - keep an eye on the website and on SkoolBag. Have a fabulous 2-week break - school resumes on Monday 15th October as there is NO Staff Development Day at the beginning of Term 4. Stay safe and drive carefully if you're hitting the road in the holidays. See you for the final quarter in a few weeks! Your proud principal,

Robyn Christie

MEPS did a fantastic job fundraising for our farmers. We all had a mar-

vellous time at our dressed like a farmer day. I especially enjoyed having

fun and line dancing in our fancy dress. Across the school, we managed

to raise an incredible……..$820.50!

Plus, we have collected a tremendous amount of non-perishable food as

well. Well done everyone! A special mention goes out to our class winners for the scarecrow competi-

tion…..K/1C and 5/6H!

We had a fantastic time last week cooking in our garden. When the weather turned bad we moved into our classrooms. We made fresh rice paper rolls which are so easy and would make a fantastic snack during the holidays. No cooking required! I have included the recipe on the next page but you can easily change the ingredients to whatever you would like.

A big thank you to the wonderful, hard working and energetic volunteers who came along

to our school working bee on Sunday. We had a few volunteers that managed to get some tricky gardening jobs done ready for a fantastic spring. Our gardens are looking fantastic,

well pruned and rejuvenated! Thanks so much for coming in on the weekend and supporting our kitchen garden program. Claire Lendich, SAKG Teacher
