This is what Ramadan teaches me By Sheikh Ali Suleiman Ali
The month of Ramadan is a blessed month, full of various opportunities to get you closer to Allah by achiev-ing the most beloved quality to Allah which is “TAQWA”. It’s the month of Qur’an, in it, there is a night of LAYLATUL-QADR which is bet-ter than thousand months. It’s a month which the gates of JANNAH are open and the gates of Hell are closed. It’s a month which the SHAYAA-TEEN (Satans) are chained. So they cannot influence those who truly fast accordingly. Ramadan is proudly to be the only deed that Almighty Allah declared to be His and He will rewarded for it abundantly. We should prepare ourselves in welcoming this blessed month by: 1. Making our intention to fast as this is our last Ramadan. 2. Repenting to Allah of all our sins which we knowingly committed and those which we committed Unknowingly. 3. Asking those you wrong them forgiveness and for give the people who you wronged. 4. plan ahead through fasting some days and making plans and arrangement how you should spend your time in the ut most beneficial ways and how you can participate in feeding those who are fasting . - Ramadan teaches me that in order to have maximum benefit from it, I have to observe it by not only abstaining from eating, drinking and having physical intimacy from down to sunset, but also to abstain from lying and acting upon lying and backbiting. - Ramadan teaches me and encourages me not to miss fard prayer in ‘Juma‘ah if I can. - Ramadan teaches me to attend TARAWEEH prayer daily. - Ramadan teaches me to read portion of Qur’an daily and encourages me to read the whole Qur’an because our be loved Prophet (pbuh) uses to review the whole Qur’an in Ramadan with Anjil Jibril. - Ramadan teaches me to study and ponder on the Qur’an. - Ramadan teaches me to stay all the night in odd number in the last days of Ramadan especially on the 27th night. - Ramadan encourages me to observe I‘tikaf in one of the 3 sacred Masaajid at least once in my life time and in my local masjid as much as I can. - Ramadan teaches me to feed some needy persons at least one day in Ramadan. - Ramadan teaches me to be more generous in giving charity in the month of Ramadan especially in the last 10 days - Ramadan encourages me not to spend all my day in sleeping . - Ramadan teaches me the meaning and the essence of patience. If someone provokes me to behave foolishly I should say to him I AM FASTING. - Ramadan makes me to give heed for what homeless people and poor feel daily. - Ramadan teaches me the highest form of Iman which is IHSAN (to worship Your Allah as you see Him, if you don’t really see Him with your naked eyes you believe strongly and feel that He sees you). - Ramadan teaches me that the smell of my breathe is more pure and fragrance with Allah than the musk. - Ramadan teaches me that its reward is abundant and unlimited. - Ramadan teaches me to be more kind to my parents, relatives and everyone. Finally, Ramadan makes me to qualify to enter Jannah through Rayyan’s gate.

Welcome our new MCWS Staff
MCWS had been blessed to have had Sr. Jumana Abusalah serve as our female Youth Director over the past couple of years. She completed her Masters in Social Work this past year, and has joined DMC as a Clinical Social Worker at the start of 2018, Alhamdulillah. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Sr. Jumana for her dedication and hard work over the last couple of years, and pray that Allah (SWT) continues to bless her with much success in her future endeavors. Our new female Youth Director, Hanan Al-Shahly, comes to us originally from the Ann Arbor commu-nity where she served as one the head mentors in the youth community for several years. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry at Eastern Michigan University a few years ago and plans on com-pleting her masters in Social Work this fall. She has experience working in the non-profit world at Zaman International and Muslim Social Services. She is excited to work with our young sisters and is looking forward to forming lasting bonds and great relationships with our community girls.
We have also recently added a new staff position at MCWS: Administrative Coordinator. This position has been filled by Samer Sabri who was raised in this community and has worked with the youth over the last several years alongside Tayssir Safi and Osama Odeh. He completed his Bachelor's degree in English and Business Administration, and is currently finishing his MBA. He has worked in non-profits and other communities in the past, as well as other recent management positions. He is excited to work with our community and hopes to help in any way he can.

MCWS 7th Annual Seerah Competition Written by Haneen Hasan & Maaria Anwar
April 21st marked MCWS’s 7th annual Seerah Competition. Yes, it really has been 7 years since the first time kids from
all over Michigan raced to learn the most they could about the life of the Prophet Muhammad (saw). Topics have ranged from actual seerah, to the lives of other prophets , and to the stories of the Sahaba. Last year however, com-
petitors once again picked up their Seerah books for the Makkan period, and this time continued with the first part of Madani Seerah.
For the 7th year in a row, Seerah Competition offered free coaching sessions to competitors every Saturday. This year’s coaching sessions saw over 400 participants, a breaking record for Seerah coaching. Sessions are taught by
trained coaches armed with exciting hands on activities and worksheets. Although classes are held at MCWS, dozens of kids from the IAGD and ICD communities were able to make it by bus.
The almost 600 Seerah Competition participants were, in addition to Madani Seerah required to learn about the daily routine of the Prophet Muhammad (saw). They learned about how he (saw) scheduled his day around salah, how he woke up, how much time he allotted to the various duties in his life, and overall how balanced he (saw) was. Partici-
pants were encouraged to implement all of these qualities into their own routines.
This year also marked Seerah Challenge’s 2nd year. The Seerah Challenge is for adults to participate along with their kids. This year there were about 70 people who listened to Seerah lectures of their choice and recorded their favorite parts to win a special prize. Seerah Challenge allows adults, no matter how busy, to keep up with the kids in the com-
munity who are learning about their Prophet (saw).
A day of absolute light, life, and enjoyment was made possible by the more than 70 volunteers who worked tirelessly to make Seerah Competition happen. From the theme, to coaching sessions, to decoration, to the amazing prizes that keep kids coming back year after year, all of this was due to the mercy of Allah (swt) and the dedicated volunteers. If
the biryani and other various food items isn’t enough to come next year, the looks of enjoyment on kids faces and even the stressed ones coming out of their competition rooms is reason enough.
Although emcee Br. Harun consistently reminded participants, Seerah Competition organizers want to reiterate that
every participant is a winner. Truly every child who picked up their books to learn about the perseverance and softness of the Prophet (saw), or better yet applied these qualities to their lives is a winner. Every child whose parents and even grandparents who learned the Seerah by helping them out is a winner. So as Br Harun instructed the audience on the day of the competition: raise your hand up, turn it backwards, and give yourself a pat on the back for job more than
well done.
