Today is Thursday, December 20, 2018, and it is D Day on your schedule….AND did you know that on this day in 1803, the United States purchased the Louisiana territory from France for a measly $15 million! The Louisiana Purchase was a land deal between the United States and France and the U.S. acquired approximately 827,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi, which is about 512 million acres. Because of this deal, the U.S. added about 13 states worth of territories at less than three cents per acre...what a steal! What would that cost today? Well, land costs today average between $1,000 and $4,000 per acre in the U.S., so the total value of the Louisiana Purchase is likely to be near $1.2 trillion! Four teams competed Monday in the Capture the Flag Tournament for Blood Cancer Research: Defaulty Boys Hot Heads Spooky Skeletons Hungry Hobos The champions were the Spooky Skeletons! Homeroom B126 will wear blue in your honor on Friday. The winner for raising the most money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society was the Hot Heads! Congratulations Marsh Creek Sixth Grade Center for donating $904.37 for blood cancer research!

Band Lessons today are: Period 2: Percussion Group 5 Smartmusic Help is available during advisory periods!

For this day, we should thank the Brothers’ Grimm for giving us the idea of a gingerbread house from their tale of Hansel and Gretel. We can all thank Melvil Dewey, who was born on this day in 1851, for creating a system to categorize and organize our libraries. The system has been in use since 1876!

If you are watching the game, bring your ticket or buy one at the door. If you are a player, just tell the ticket collectors you are a player. Players should walk in and find the big chicken who will give them their flags. Don’t miss the bake sale near the stage. See you there!

Last weekend was the end of the eight day Jewish holiday called Hanukkah. During this celebration, the Jewish community remembers their victory in a battle to save their place of worship. After the war, a special candle was lit in their temple that miraculously lasted eight days instead of one. During Hanukkah, gifts are shared each night, special foods are eaten, and Jewish families light a new candle on the menorah.
