#6 Muskegon CC Jayhawks Finish 7th at the NWCA Multi-Divisional National Duals

The Jayhawks traveled to Fort Wayne, Ind. on Friday and Saturday, January 9 & 10 to complete

in the 2015 NWCA National Duals. The Jayhawks finished in 7th place with a 3-2 record in the

two-day tournament and are now 9-2 overall.

The #6 ranked Jayhawks have complete most of the season with a line up missing a couple

weights. It was no different this weekend. The Jayhawks were short two weight classes. “It’s

tough to win at this level giving teams a 12 point lead. Our guys wrestled well and showed a lot

of toughness placing 7th.” said Head Coach James Tietema. “We plan to have all ten weights

Olivet Wrestling Duals November 22, 2014 @ 10:00 am - 6:00 pm

#11 Jayhawk Wrestling Team Upset Olivet and Alma to Improve to 5-0

The #11 Jayhawks traveled to Olivet, MI on Saturday, November 22 to compete in the Olivet Duals. The

Jayhawks faced multiple obstacles this weekend and were able to upset Olivet College 23-22 and Alma

College 23-20. The Jayhawks added another win against Davenport University 34-9. The Biggest obstacle

for the Jayhawks had to overcome was having three wrestlers out of their line-up. The Jayhawks were

down their 125, 174, & 184 starters that caused them to forfeit two of the ten weight classes.

The Jayhawks opened their day against Olivet College with the most exciting Dual match of the day. The

Jayhawks were down 22-17 going into the HWT match between MCC’s freshmen Jay Sroufe (Britton,

MI/Dundee HS) and Jesse Judge of Olivet. Sroufe was able to pin Judge with just 19 seconds left in the

match scoring six team points and giving the Jayhawks a 23-22 win. “As intense as the moment was I

had a lot of confidence that Jay was going to come through for the team. He was getting better as the

match continued and was getting closer and closer to getting a pin. You could feel the excitement

building.” said Head Coach James Tietema.

The Jayhawks continued to wrestle well against Davenport winning 34-9. The Jayhawks were set up for a

great tournament with only one match to go. The Jayhawks were facing Alma College in their final match

and once again found themselves in a HWT match that would decide the Dual, tied 20-20 at the start of

HWT match. This time it was freshman John Marogen (Monroe, MI/Dundee HS), a high school teammate

of Sroufe at Dundee HS, to win the dual for the Jayhawks. “John wrestled a smart HWT match. He

controlled the action and tempo of the match to receive a stalling point that gave him the lead. He then

was patient and let his opponent force a bad attack and countered for the win.” Head Coach James

Tietema said about the match. The Jayhawks beat Alma College 23-20.

The Jayhawks take a short break for Thanksgiving and will be back in action on Friday and Saturday,

December 5 & 6 in Niagara, NY in the Timberwolves Open.
