About MCM Expo

The MCM (Movie/Comic/Media) Expo is a exhibition held twice a year, for fans of Anime, Manga, Sci-fi, Comics, Film & Gaming. It started back in May 2002 and occurs at then end of both May and October each year for 3 days, Friday to Sunday. It is located at the Excel Centre in London’s Docklands and expects around 60,000 fans attending with each

expo. It gives people a chance to meet people with similar interests and purchase more items for their collection. People also dress up (called Cosplay) as their favourite characters and compete in shows. There are also a wide range of special celebrity guests from Film & TV who will do signings and panel shows. Tickets cost around £10 for the day

with early entry priced at around £16.

Page 3: MCM EXPO NAVI APP

The app

MCM EXPO NAVI is named after the mystical guide in the popular Zelda franchise. It will help guide the fans around the expo. It is spilt into 5 different parts to help throughout the day.

MAP: The map shall tell you where you are inside the hall with GPS; outline the stall locations, stages and exits. You can also scan stalls QR codes to store them and help you remember which ones you want when revisiting.GUESTS: The guest’s page shows you who is on throughout that specific day. You can then search with many filters for the shows that interest you. You will have the option to set a reminder for shows which goes off 20 minutes before, allowing you time to get to the right stage.TICKET: Instead of paper wristbands, the app will be able to store your digital ticket on your phone. These can then be scanned when entering the venue, saving on the chaos of the crowds. If you didn’t buy your ticket prior, you can buy on the app, saving on queuing.NEWS: Rolling news feed will show up to date information about stalls, guests and competition results.CONNECT: Here you will be able to connect to Facebook, Twitter and the main website, allowing you to share your experiences with everyone else.

At the Expo, there are a few problems that usually occur:

• With the vast amount of people attending, it gets busy and crowded, making it easy to get lost for both new and returning fans.

• With 100+ stalls in the hall, is can be confusing remembering which ones you’ve already been to and which ones you want to return to.

• A vast amount of celebrities are on at different times and different stages, it’s hard to remember who’s on when.

• The promotional guides and maps run out quickly.• The queue for ticket purchase can take hours to queue

for.• Getting into the hall with your wristband can be

chaotic and unorganized.

Original Logo

Before the app is designed, the overall look of MCM expo needs revisiting. The logo hasn’t changed much in the last 10 years and has become dated. The logo has become dated and the ‘Eye’ element has become lost and forgettable. The logo needs to be uplifted with a modern font, whilst keeping its iconic orange colour. With a new logo, it will be easier to run through with an overall style, helping everything tie together and feel connected under a new brand.

Page 5: MCM EXPO NAVI APP

Improved Logo

MCMEXPOLONDON

The new logo is simplistic but works well. The typeface gets across the comic book/cyber style whilst keeping the orange colour. The logo is set together in a block like style, making it easy to apply to anything. The Logo is adaptable

too, allowing for change on location, if held in the Midlands or Scotland (which is currently being negotiated). The ‘Navi’ Logo follows the same style, tying up the overall look nicely.

Page 6: MCM EXPO NAVI APP

App Logo

The app icon runs with the same colour scheme as seen before. The logo is encased in a circle with a ‘rising sun’ pattern in the background, often seen in Japanese media. The icon is bold and inviting, making it easy to find on

your phone.

The unique colour scheme is bright and playful. All the colours are based of the most popular Cosplays from MCM expo. Each colour corresponds to an area of the app, whilst also being a bright way to liven up the venues space.

Even with all these new colours, the MCM Ochre will still be the main colour.

Once you start the app up,the Splash Screen will greet you. To get to the app, you will have to pull back the page by pulling it back and sliding it across the screen. It is a simple and fun element, which can relate to manga and comic

books. This will take you onto the bright and colourful home screen, also set out in a comic book style.

Set in Vancouver British Columbia, the year is 2077, world governments have fallen and have been bought out by corporations leading to loss of privacy and basic rights. A group of fanatical terrorists, bent on getting freedom back at all costs, destroy multiple buildings killing 30,000 people while targeting 20 members of the Corporate Board. As the 7 terrorists are about to be executed they attempt an escape by being sent back in time 6 years instead being sent back 65 years to our time, 2012. Dedicated CPS Protector (future police force) Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols) attempts to stop their escape and gets swept away along with them.

Star of films such as Aliens, Near Dark, Twister and Titanic, actor and director Bill Paxton was at Theatre A, the main stage at London’s MCM Expo, to talk about the latest graphic novel that he had produced, Seven Holes for Air. He took the time to answer questions from fans, talking about what he was proud of, his influences, as well as delivering ‘that’ iconic line from Aliens. The graphic novel tells the story of Bob Rourke, a 50-year-old steelworker who happens to smoke and drink (Paxton describes him as, “very hardcore”). He ends up visiting the doctor for the first time in his life after suffering a persistent headache. The news is not good, as Bob is told that a disease has taken over his body and he doesn’t have long left. Bob goes back home, and back to work and envisions himself in an alternate
