ABOUT THE MOOT COURT SOCIETY

The exercise of mooting is one of the highlights of every law curriculum. The Moot Court Society (MCS) of Campus Law Centre was found to develop the interests of students in the activity of mooting. The society deals with all specific and ancillary aspects of organization of moot court competitions. This includes the circulation of invitations of national and international moot court competitions, trial advocacy competitions and ADR competitions, conducting internal competitions for selection of teams to represent Campus Law Centre in such competitions and providing assistance to students in completing registration processes for these competitions.

Executive Committee:

In order to discharge the daily functions of the society and to ensure smooth running of its internal functions, an executive committee comprising second and third year students of CLC was formed, following a rigorous selection process. Having received over 40 applications, the society shortlisted 23 candidates for interviews with the teacher members. 14 members were selected to form the executive committee, the composition of which is as follows:

EVENTS ORGANISED

May 2020:

National webinar on ‘Trial by Media: Free Speech and Fair Trial under the Code of Criminal Procedure,1973’ The webinar was held on May 25th, 2020. Senior Advocate Ms. Rebecca John, an alumnus of Campus Law Centre and a distinguished personality in the legal world, delivered the talk. The discussion revolved around how the media influences a criminal trial and its consequent effect on the rights of the parties involved in the trial.

September 2020:

Workshop on Legal Research and Methodology and Techniques to Use Manupatra The workshop was held on September 8th, 2020. The MCS invited officials from Manupatra for this workshop. The objective was to train the students in research methods, specifically those relating to Manupatra. It was also designed to better prepare students for the upcoming Common Induction Moot (CIM).

Common Induction Moot (CIM) 2020 The society organised the Annual Common Induction Moot on September 19th, 2020 to induct new members into the society. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the CIM was conducted online. Students from the Batch of 2021 and the Batch of 2022 participated, given the pending admission of first year students.

October 2020:

Workshop on ‘Understanding of Alternative Dispute Resolution’ The online workshop took place on October 26th, 2020. The workshop was conducted by Ms. Iram Majid, Director, Indian Institute of Arbitration and Mediation. The workshop was structured as an interactive session and

witnessed participation by over 40 students. The focus was on acquainting students with different concepts in Alternative Dispute Resolution, particularly negotiation and mediation.

January 2021:

17th K.K. Luthra Memorial Moot Court, 2021 The Moot Court Society hosted its flagship competition, the K.K. Luthra Memorial Moot Court Competition in collaboration with the office of Mr. Sidharth Luthra, Senior Advocate, from January 11th, 2021 to January 17th

2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the competition was conducted virtually in an audio visual mode.

Despite the challenges of conducting the moot virtually, the college successfully managed to host 68 teams from various legal institutions including several NLU’s, Faculties of Law across the globe. The competition also witnessed the participation of 19 international teams from esteemed universities including Kingston University, London, Strathmore University Kenya, University of Ibadan Nigeria, Faculty of Law National University Singapore amongst multiple other institutions from Australia, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan etc.

The final round was conducted on 17.01.2021 and witnessed the participation of both the finalists in full spirit and zeal. The round was adjudicated by a bench comprising of Hon’ble Justices of the Delhi High Court. The team from Tamil Nadu National Law University, Tiruchirappalli [Manikandan Prabhu J, S. Sivakumar, Nilavan S.] were adjudged as winners of the competition, while the team from SASTRA Deemed to be University, Thanjavur [Haripriya V., Saradha Dharsini, Nandhini S.R] were adjudged the runners up.

The valedictory ceremony was held in the presence of esteemed guests including the Chief Guest - Hon'ble Mr. Justice Surya Kant, Judge, Supreme Court of India. The Guests of Honour included - Hon'ble Mr. Justice Navin Chawla, Judge, High Court of Delhi, Hon'ble Mr. Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani, Judge, High Court of Delhi, Hon'ble Mr. Justice Talwant Singh, Judge, High Court of Delhi. Other dignitaries included Prof. (Dr.) Raman Mittal, Professor-in charge, Campus Law Centre, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, Ms. Maneka Gandhi (Former Union Minister), Senior Adv. Ms. Geeta Luthra, Dr. Meera Luthra, Ms. Ketaki Goswami, Asst. Prof. (Dr.) Harleen Kaur, Convenor, Moot Court Society, Campus Law Centre, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi and other faculty members of Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi.

February 2021: Orientation Programme of the Moot Court Society The society organised the Orientation Programme for first year students of CLC on February 6, 2021. The welcome address was given by Mr. Vijoy V. Panicker which was followed by the Moot Court Demonstration. Thereafter, the society conducted an interactive session to help address queries about mooting, upcoming events, etc. The vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Rubina Grewal Nagra.

Workshop on How to Read & Approach a Moot Problem + Basics of Research The workshop was held on February 14, 2021 by Executive Members of the Moot Court Society. The objective of the workshop was to introduce newly inducted first year students with the basics of legal research as well as tips to use various legal research databases. They were also given an in-depth understanding of how to approach a moot problem.

Workshop on How to Draft a Memorial The workshop was held on February 21, 2021 by Executive Members of the Moot Court Society. The objective of the workshop was to introduce first year students to the concept of drafting a memorial. The detailed workshop took them through various aspects of drafting a memorial, footnoting, arguments, etc. and also taught the students the dos and don’ts of drafting. Workshop on Oral Advocacy & Court Mannerisms The workshop was held on February 25, 2021 by Executive Members of the Moot Court Society. The objective of the workshop was to help the first years understand the various mannerisms and formalities to be observed while arguing in a Court, with special emphasis on how to effectively communicate with the Court as an advocate.

Freshers’ Induction Moot (FIM) 2021 The society organized the Annual Freshers’ Induction Moot on February 28th, 2021 to induct new members into the society. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the FIM was conducted online. First year students (Batch of 2023) participated enthusiastically, with 65 students being inducted into the society.

March 2021:

Mediation Demonstration & ADR Workshop The workshop was held on March 20th, 2021 by Executive Members of the Moot Court Society. The objective of the workshop was to introduce first year students to the concept of Mediation and Negotiation. The detailed workshop took them through various aspects of the Mediation process, how a mediation (and other ADR) competitions are structured, the necessary formalities of the same, the dos and don'ts etc. The same was followed by a Mediation Demo conducted by Executive Members of the Society as well as a general queries session.
