Marshfield Clinic is an 800-plus physician multi-specialty group. Residents have the opportunity to do an outpatient child psychiatry rotation in a clinic that features a broad spectrum of child expertise and services including Autism, and ADHD Clinics. Marshfield Hospital also has a robust Consultation Liaison Service and ECT program that residents can rotate through during their residency.

Norwood Health Center (Wood County) Residents will spend 2 months in the PGY-4 year at this county mental health facility which features a 16-bed inpatient unit, a transitional unit and a developmental disorders unit. Norwood sees a wide spectrum of psychiatric disorders. Residents will take part in forensic commitment proceedings and long term treatment planning for the chronically mentally ill patient with a comprehensive community treatment team.

TRAINING SITESThe MCW-Central Wisconsin Psychiatric Residency Program is embedded in the communities of Central Wisconsin. Residents will benefit from working in private, community and VA settings. Our mission is to serve the diverse populations of rural and small urban centers. If you are interested in serving in an area of need in a variety of locations, this could be your ideal training experience.

North Central Health Care (NCHC) is a not-for-profit agency that provides inpatient and outpatient health and mental health care for Marathon County and several other Central Wisconsin counties. Residents will have the opportunity to learn from the comprehensive community services that NCHC provides. In the PGY1 year, NCHC will be the site of the one month emergency psychiatry rotation and three months of the six required months of inpatient psychiatry. The inpatient service provides treatment for patients age 13 and up with a wide variety of diagnoses. In the PGY2 year, NCHC provides residents an outpatient psychiatry experience including psychotherapy and medical management. NCHC will also provide elective rotations in the PGY4 year.

In the PGY 2, 3, and 4 years the Tomah VA Medical Center and its Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Wisconsin Rapids will provide opportunities for training in several important areas. The Tomah VA is known for treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) In the PGY3/4 years, there will be an opportunity for residents to elect/select to participate in a residential PTSD program or an addiction treatment program at the Tomah VA Hospital. The Tomah VA provides housing for residents to avoid daily commuting during the elective/selective rotations.

Ascension Saint Mary's Hospital in Rhinelander is a private general medical surgical hospital with a psychiatric inpatient service and a child/adolescent service. In the PGY1 year, Ascension Saint Mary’s is the site for two months of the six required inpatient psychiatry months. Their inpatient service provides care for patients with a spectrum of conditions. In the PGY2 year, this site provides the two plus required months (20% FTE for 12 months) of child and adolescent psychiatry with their outpatient child program.

In the PGY1 year, residents will complete their two-month neurology requirement at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee. Residents will be part of the Medical College of Wisconsin's (MCW) academic neurology treatment service that sees acute inpatient neurological patients as well as provide neurological consults to the entire hospital. The combination will provide exposure to a variety of neurological conditions. MCW will provide housing for residents while they are in Milwaukee for the two-month rotation.

Ascension Saint Michael's Hospital in Stevens Point is a private, general medical/surgical facility where residents will have the experience of both consultation liaison and inpatient psychiatry rotations. The inpatient unit has 12 beds and the C/L service provides an average of 2-4 consultations daily. These two services will provide required rotations in these domains.

Aspirus Wausau Hospital is the primary care teaching site during the PGY1 year working in tandem with the Aspirus Family Medicine Residency Program. The Wausau Family Medicine Residency Program provides challenging experiences in rural medicine, cardiac and medical intensive care, emergency medicine, pediatrics, and obstetrics. The MCW-CW residents will be part of their teaching service rotation.

Psychiatric Crisis Service (PCS at Milwaukee County Mental Health Complex) Residents will have the opportunity to work in the psychiatric crisis service of Milwaukee and learn to promptly identify medical presentations in an urban psychiatric ER that require immediate attention, be able to identify signs of escalation and agitation, and learn non-pharmacological and pharmacological management of acute agitation.
