Other Announcements!
TTTHEHEHE PPPREZREZREZ SSSEZEZEZ…….…….……. Greetings to all!! I’d like to take up some space in our newsletter, preferable somewhere in the corner entitled “The Prez
Sez” going forward. This little corner in the newsletter will feature club updates and current events that our club is undergoing amongst other things. However, I’d like to start this article by introducing myself and tell you about your new President of the Great Dane Club of California. Most of you know me already, for those who don’t, my name is Jim Howey and I have had companion dogs all of my life. In 1981, I purchased my first AKC registered dog, a salt & pepper Miniature Schnauzer named Dino. In 1996, I was introduced to what I thought was the most magnificent and regal dog, the Harlequin Great Dane. I then purchased my foundation bitch Lauren in 1997 who went 1st in class in open Harlequin at the 1999 National Specialty. Lauren went on winning handled by Sylvia Rodwell and ultimately finished by Doug Toomey in 2003. During this time, I was handling my bred-by boy Dorian, who I finished in 2005 as breeder, owner & handler. Currently, I am campaigning another bred-by boy Shane, who went RWD at Palm Springs and BOW at his 4th showing at the recent Orange Empire Show on Sunday at only 13 months. Early in my showing career, I attended George Alston’s handling 2 day seminars, placing 3rd out of 20 in his beginning class and 2nd out of 20 in his advanced class. I have traveled up north to visit with Eva Robinson, have had conversations with my friend Gina Jaeblon, wanted to visit with Laura Kiaulenas, but didn’t get the chance and you can find me at ringside sitting with my dear friend Maryann Wilson. All of who have guided me through my very colorful breeding program and I mean colorful! I have attended breeder’s seminar’s amongst them was Pat Hastings “Puppy Puzzle” and more recently an AKC Judge’s seminar’s hosted by Pete Gaeta. One of my ultimate goals is to become an AKC Judge because of the undying love I have for the breed. I look forward to a wonderful and exciting year with the club as we have our own back-to-back specialties coming up in June as well as co-hosting (with our other Division Partners) the 2011 Great Dane Club of America’s National Specialty in Arizona. I’d like to see everyone at our specialties this year as they are going to be a lot of fun and we will collectively show our support for the gentle giants we so dearly love. With respectful regards,
Jim Howey

Rattlesnake News - A Warning!
— Article Submitted By Cathy Schaefer
This information is from an e-mail routed by Stormy Hope from carpoc.org
Better to be aware.
I've been seeing this and telling people for about 15 years up here. Lost 3 adult horses to neurotoxic bites. The Pacific rattlers have apparently interbred with a neurotoxic species
( mojave?) and I have experienced not only the “no” warning (no rattling) but extra aggressive behavior early in the season. I don't think the snake vaccine for dogs protects much against this species. I consider every rattler dangerous and possibly having neurotoxin. At first it seemed mostly the black diamondbacks, but other rosey/red /tan colored ones have been neurotoxic too. — Fred Zadick DVM Read all the links Please note:
A dog was recently bitten in Garner Valley by a Southern Pacific rattlesnake. The treating veterinarian noted that the venom was neurotoxic and insisted that the snake had been a Mojave Green. The dog's owner, however, has a degree in herpetology and knew positively that the bite came from a Southern Pacific rattler. The dog developed none of the symptoms associated with hemotoxins; there was no swelling at all. Despite the injection of three vials of antivenom, the dog died. The dominant species in the San Jacinto Mts (above the pinyon line) is the Southern Pacific. A recent study detected neurotoxins in a 25% of 25 samples. It has also been noted that the species seldom rattles. I have personally removed four Southern Pacific rattlesnakes from my property in recent years; not a single one sounded the characteristic warning rattle. These developments indicate that the Southern Pacific rattler is far more dangerous than previously thought. The bite is becoming "supertoxic". — George Service See links below http://www.nwf.org/News-and-Magazines/National-Wildlife/Animals/Archives/2009/Venom-Emergency.aspx http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10628285_ http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1134/is_6_109/ai_63290990_ The Southern Pacific rattlesnake, C. oreganus helleri, has myotoxic, neurotoxic, and hemorrhagic components in its venom (51, 52). French et al. (53) reported that Mojave toxin (MT) has been detected in five of 25 C. oreganus helleri using anti-MT antibodies and was confirmed using nucleotide sequence analysis. All of the positive venom samples for MT were collecte d from Mt. San Jacinto in Riverside County, California.

Background Launched in 1989, Canine Good Citizen is an AKC certification program that rewards dogs with good behavior both at home and in the community. Testing is a ten (10) part test that requires passing all ten (10) parts to obtain CGC Certification:
1. Accepting a friendly stranger 6. Sit and down on command and Staying in place
2. Sitting politely for petting 7. Coming when called
3. Appearance and grooming 8. Reaction to another dog
4. Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead) 9. Reaction to distraction
5. Walking through a crowd 10. Supervised separation
Additional Information Dogs must be on leash when performing tests. Well-fitting buckle or slip collars made of leather, fabric, or chain, should be worn by dogs. Pinch collars, head halters, and other special training collars are not permitted in the CGC test. A 20’ lead for the test will be provided by the evaluator. The dog's brush or comb should be brought to the test by the owner/handler. Owners/handlers may praise and use encouragement throughout the test. The owner may pet the dog between exercises. Treats and food are not allowed during testing, neither are toys, squeaky toys, etc. Upon passing, owners/handlers will be provided with the proper documents to submit to the AKC for CGC registration. Any applicable AKC fees are the responsibility of the owner/handler. Dogs that eliminate during testing will be marked failed. There is an exception to this rule in that elimination is allowable in test Item 10, when test Item 10 is held outdoors.
