Introduction

On 26 of June 2015, with the assistance of our Measurement 1 lecturer, Sr. Ang Fuey Lin, a construction site visit was managed to be organized for us. Miss Ang and some lecturers had accompanied us along to the visit. This site visit is located at Jalan Puchong. We were required to have our own safety helmet to enter the construction site. Before the site visit started, we were given a safety brief talk by the project manager. After that we were then asked to get into groups of 7-8 students and also gi ven a guide to walk us through the site and explain to us about is seen around the site.

Objective

• To expose the actual working environment as Quantity Surveyor on site including uncertainly circumstances.

• To have a better understanding on the general basic of construction process.

• To explore and identify various types of materials that always will be used in construction while constructing a building.

• Ability to apply academic theory into real-life practical working experience.

Content/ Technical observation

I was separate into the second group and arrived at the construction site at 10 a.m. Before enter the site we were be able to see a information board and get to know some detail information of the building . On the way walking into the construction area, I observed that this construction site is divided into three phases, the first phase of the site, which was located upon entrance of the site, had its work below lowest ground floor level completed and the contractors was working on the construction of the basement carpark of the condominium.

Figure1: This information board was well placed in front of the site.

Firstly, Our guide Mr, Asri gave us a little briefing about being safety in construction site and remind us to follow his steps and do not wander around without his permission. After that, he explained to us about the structures the workers were working on, which are the columns, slabs and the walls of the basement carpark. Mr. Asri told us that there are two types of reinforcement bars used for the columns which is T25 and T32, whereas for the links is using Y12 and spacing is 100. For the concrete used is reinforced in-situ concrete Grade 35. Besides that, concrete Grade 35 pump make water proofing used for retaining wall.

As I walked along the construction site I also observed many types of

reinforcement bars that was in bundles waiting to be used. There were also some workers who was bending the reinforcement bar using the bar bending machine.

8

Besides that, I saw some workers who are preparing concrete covers to be tied on reinforcement bars before the formwork is placed and the concrete is poured in.

Furthermore, I observed that the workers were working on the foundation of the building. Mr Asri told us that the type of foundation that is been using for the construction of The Andes condominium is piled foundation. The reason of using piled foundation is because the building stands 20-storeys high and it requires a strong and deep foundation to support it. I also saw some of the workers were using several construction equipment, such as water suction pump. Lattice boom

cranes, and excavator.

Conclusion

13

After the site visit, I gained a lot of construction knowledge and get to experience the actual working in construction site. I have also learnt the importance of teamwork in a team to construct a building. Taking this construction team as an example, every position is essential for a successful project: without an architect, there will be no designs, without an engineer, there will be no solid building; without a quantity surveyor, there will be no accurate billings; without workers, those blueprints will still be as what they are. A project may not be done successfully and in schedule without any of them.

Through this site visit, I also be able to have a clearer vision of what had been taught by Ms. Ang, especially those construction elements such as the the construction of the pilcaps, slabs, column etc. Besides that, Safety issues have also been raised as one of the crucial matters to take account into when we are one of the supervisors of the projects. Learnt to be safe in construction site is very important in order to protect ourselves to avoid accidents or interfering people who working at the site.

Generally, I am very thankful that Ms. Ang was willing to take her time to arrange this site visit for us and gave us an extraordinary experience in this visit.again I would like to thank every related authorities that made this trip possible for us again.
